City, Sand, and Savanna - Link to new trip report

all I can say is a better look good in this picture Glenn! :rotfl2: On second thought, I'm not even sure if this IS my picture. :confused3 Let's hope for my sake it is.

I probably would have seen all these pictures last night if I hadn't been so devistated after losing most of my own TR. I decided to put the computer away for the rest of the evening.

Hahahahahahaha :rotfl2: i morphed.....into Julie AND Mark!!!!!!!!! I look great! :rotfl2:

On a serious not, thanks for not taking a picture of me with whip cream up my nose or something like that. Our group shot turned out great! :thumbsup2

Great meet- I really need to visit the cheesecake factory near soon. Droooll.:rolleyes2

Looks like a great DISmeet! :cool1: I love cheesecake factory - I'm with Cynthia - hard to eat the cheesecake if you've eaten the dinner. We usually get it to go if we can!So nice you got to see each other! I know for Glen and Mark it was a redo, but nice to meet your better halves!

Oh how I love Cheesecake Factory. I'm partial to the Red Velvet myself, and I love Judy's idea of an app as an entree. I usually get a burger or pizza and end up with leftovers.

Red Velvet is what Judy got and it's what James wanted us to bring home for him. (Marlene got a rapsberry truffle, and that's a story in itself.) They both loved it.

See Glenn Marv had to try to minimize my brilliant correct and FIRST answer;):rotfl2:

Sour grapes, you think?

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo: for a DIS meet, and at one of our favorite places to eat:thumbsup2

:wave2:Hi Julie and Mark (I hope I get to meet the better half of this combo one day); :wave2: Hi Dawn...I'm all set with those postcards on arrival day; and :wave2: MaryEllen and Denny...hope to meet you both one day.

Glenn, thanks for sharing the DIS meet with us.

Yep. A lot of TRs were represented at that table! I'm glad I got to meet them and their better halves!

:cool1: for a great DISmeet! Sounds like you all had fun.

Sure did. We're not all that far from each other, so it was high-time.

That is the best cheesecake ever. I don't care how much food I eat, there's never anything left of it to take home.:rotfl2:

I agree, the best. Judy doesn't like any of the chocolate ones because she says they're "too chocolatey". I'm like....those words don't even go together! :confused3

Looks like a nice meal. As soon as I saw the word cheesecake in the title, I knew it had to involve Mark and The Cheesecake Factory somehow. :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

That may or may not be the only reason he agreed to meet me again. :rotfl2:

Being from the south, I really had some kind of complex with it at first. I mean, RVC is just one of those things that shouldn't be messed with. Even Ben and Jerry screwed it up, so I didn't order it on principle for the longest time. Of course, now I love it, so I'll just shush now. :thumbsup2

Oh yeah, you look great!

On second thought, I'm not even sure if this IS my picture. :confused3

Noooo!

Let's hope for my sake it is.

Would it be really embarrassing if it wasn't?

I probably would have seen all these pictures last night if I hadn't been so devistated after losing most of my own TR. I decided to put the computer away for the rest of the evening.

That'll teach it!

You can't get lost, due to the superb road system. ;)

And it's a good thing too. :rolleyes2

Look, I clearly ordered french fries instead of onion rings.

That's the last time they make that mistake!

She's also Wonder Woman, but don't spoil her secret identity, ok?

I'm pretty high up in the Justice League *coughBatmancough* so yeah, I knew that already.

That does seem appropriate. I'm starting to wonder if meeting up with you is disturbing the balance of the Force or something. :confused3

Too many midichlorians in one place. Yeah, that'll do it.

She's all business when it comes to cheesecake.

Hey, that's what we're here for, right?!

Thanks for putting it all together! We had a great time and loved finally getting to meet Judy, Denny and Dawn. :thumbsup2

I'm glad we were able to find a date that suited everybody. I hope you thanked your cousin for babysitting!

It's actually our picture. And yes, we look amazing. :rotfl2:

The way you said that made me think of this Seinfeld quote.

very nice dis meet, looks fun and good food to boot.

A great time!

its a midwest dish.;)

Them's good eats.

By the way, there was only one Judy present at the meal. So I get the point for that evening. :cool1:

Here ya go! +1:thumbsup2

Good try Dan !!!!;):rotfl2:

:)

The Rules committee will never go for that and neither will Marv!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Oh yeah, right! We can't go for that. Point reversed. ;)

Glenn, that meet looked like a lot of fun!! What a great group of Dis'ers!! :lovestruc I would have loved to have been there for that meet. :goodvibes

It was a great group!

We would have loved to have had you there as well. So, if you're ever in the neighborhood...

Way to go, girl!! :thumbsup2

Girl power.

Oooo...yum, my favorite place to eat!!!

Not a big fan of cheesecake though...

The menu's big enough that you don't need to go there for just cheesecake, that's for sure. I didn't look -- do they have other, non-cheesecake desserts?

Hahahahahahaha :rotfl2: i morphed.....into Julie AND Mark!!!!!!!!! I look great! :rotfl2:

If I had to morph....that'd certainly be one of the options.

On a serious not, thanks for not taking a picture of me with whip cream up my nose or something like that. Our group shot turned out great! :thumbsup2

I suppose it could have been worse, although I didn't see you with any unflattering whipped cream splotches.

Yes, I thought that the group shot turned out really nice. Our server/photopass-photographer did a great job with that one!

Great meet- I really need to visit the cheesecake factory near soon. Droooll.:rolleyes2

If you go to this one in Delaware, let me know. ;)

Looks like a great DISmeet! :cool1: I love cheesecake factory - I'm with Cynthia - hard to eat the cheesecake if you've eaten the dinner. We usually get it to go if we can!

Getting it to go is definitely an acceptable option.

So nice you got to see each other! I know for Glen and Mark it was a redo, but nice to meet your better halves!

Yep, it was great that they could meet too. They have a lot in common -- nerdy, TR-writing hubbies.

What a fun meet! I've never eaten here. We don't have that franchise instead we have this Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro.

"Bistro" sounds higher-class than "factory".

Your food looked very yummy and the company looked even better.

I think you were right on that one! :)

Being from the south, I really had some kind of complex with it at first. I mean, RVC is just one of those things that shouldn't be messed with. Even Ben and Jerry screwed it up, so I didn't order it on principle for the longest time. Of course, now I love it, so I'll just shush now. :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: I liked the "shush now" part.

You're right though, Cheesecake Factory got Red Velvet Cake right!

The menu's big enough that you don't need to go there for just cheesecake, that's for sure. I didn't look -- do they have other, non-cheesecake desserts?

Most definitely. I like their strawberry shortcake the best. They also have three kinds of chocolate cake as well as carrot cake.

This certainly was a very fun evening - even though I am very disappointed that Mark and Glen did not manage to repeat their matching shirts. You guys should have worked harder at it!!

The Cheesecake Factory is one of those American chains which has always intrigued me. I think I ate at one in Boston - but my ex-boyfriend who was with me was very anti-dessert and discouraged me from actually getting a cheesecake. The food was good though. But I hope that my next trip to WDW will include some time in other parts of Florida as well, so I already have a list of places I want to try: Cheesecake Factory, Benihana and Cracker Barrell. :goodvibes

I'm pretty high up in the Justice League *coughBatmancough* so yeah, I knew that already.

That makes me think of that football player in the Snickers commercial who gets hit and then says, "I'm Batman!"

I'm glad we were able to find a date that suited everybody. I hope you thanked your cousin for babysitting!

We gave her a piece of Oreo Dream Extreme Heart Attack-On-A-Plate cheesecake. That's dessert-speak for "thank you".

The way you said that made me think of this Seinfeld quote.

:thumbsup2

Here ya go! +1:thumbsup2

:woohoo::yay::cool1::banana:

Oh yeah, right! We can't go for that. Point reversed. ;)

:headache::mad::furious:

And I was going to give you movie quote points for the ones you identified at dinner. Oh well.

Yep, it was great that they could meet too. They have a lot in common -- nerdy, TR-writing hubbies.

Those poor, poor women. I bet Judy went home that night and said, "We don't ever have to see them again, right?" :rotfl2:

This certainly was a very fun evening - even though I am very disappointed that Mark and Glen did not manage to repeat their matching shirts. You guys should have worked harder at it!!

I did mention to Glenn that I was very relieved he wore a different shirt this time! :rotfl:

No dessert?? That's just...wrong.

I always thought it was impossible to walk into a place called The Cheesecake Factory and not get cheesecake. Or at least get it to go, for later.

Glenn, did you get Marlene's order right this time?

Most definitely. I like their strawberry shortcake the best. They also have three kinds of chocolate cake as well as carrot cake.

Oh wow, those sound good too!

This certainly was a very fun evening - even though I am very disappointed that Mark and Glen did not manage to repeat their matching shirts. You guys should have worked harder at it!!

I wore the right one, of course. Mark messed up.

Oh yeah, you’ve gotta try Cracker Barrell. I love it, but it really is Americana, chain-restaurant style.

That makes me think of that football player in the Snickers commercial who gets hit and then says, "I'm Batman!"

I don’t think I’ve seen that one…they must not run it during the SpongeBob episodes I’m forced to watch.

We gave her a piece of Oreo Dream Extreme Heart Attack-On-A-Plate cheesecake. That's dessert-speak for "thank you".

More like “thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou!”

And I was going to give you movie quote points for the ones you identified at dinner. Oh well.

Those poor, poor women. I bet Judy went home that night and said, "We don't ever have to see them again, right?" :rotfl2:

No, not at all. She enjoyed meeting everyone and especially Julie, who she could empathize with. :rotfl:

I did mention to Glenn that I was very relieved he wore a different shirt this time! :rotfl:

Yes, as an internet stalker I’ve learned to play it down a little more, which is good.

Glenn, did you get Marlene's order right this time?

I swear, when our server started to say something right after I put in Marlene’s order, I thought for sure that she was going to say that they were out of that kind! :faint: I thought I’d have to go into my speech where I yell “If I were the man I was five years ago, I’d take a flamethrower to this place!”

On the look out for the next update !!!!!

Oh really?

We got up on “Day 2”, Tuesday June 19th, got ready and went down to check out the complimentary breakfast. It left a little to be desired, like most of those places do, but somehow we found enough to get us going.

We made one last trek back to the room to get our stuff, but before we took our things down to the van, I got a picture of Judy and Lauren in their newly-acquired I-Heart-NY shirts.

IMG_0024.jpg

And after everyone else left, I took a quick picture of the room so you could see the sweet (suite!) extra bed/couch we had. We'd folded it back into "couch mode" before we left. Poor James, I know he was sooo looking-forward to the sleeping-bag-on-the-floor routine that he usually gets stuck with.

IMG_0025.jpg

We got rolling at about 8:30, crossed the border into Florida and after several iterations of “only X more miles to go” which occurred every 15 minutes or so, we arrived at Disney’s Vero Beach resort a little before 1 o’clock. The guard greeted us with a “welcome home” and we proceeded into the lobby to get checked-in. I didn’t do online check-in ahead of time -- I haven’t seen any evidence that it really benefits you. In fact, if anything, it looks to me like it basically locks you into a room assignment rather than allowing the front desk person from looking for a room that’s ready, or has a good view, or whatever the case may be. Anyway, enough about that. We were really excited walking into the lobby for the first time, eager to make our first impressions and see if it really felt like “Disney”.

I went to the front desk while the rest of the family looked around the lobby and went to check out the gift shop. The front desk cast member gave me our check-in packet and some “First Visit” buttons, since it was our first time visiting the Vero resort. Then, after the required keyboard-tapping and mouse-clicking, she told me that our room was ready. Score! After just a few minutes we were back out to the van to drive to our building.

It might be helpful for you to know the layout of the Vero Beach resort. “The Inn” is at the center of the property, and it contains the front desk, restaurants, store, and the hotel-style rooms (I didn’t see any of these rooms, but I imagine they are the equivalent of Studio rooms at other DVC resorts). Towards the beach and running the length of the property north to south, are 6 cottages, which are basically the “grand villas” of the Vero resort. People staying in those have the whole unit. (That wasn’t us, it’s just for info.) And lastly, the suites are in buildings 12, 14, and 15, which you can see on the map below, to the left and right of the Inn. Our room was 1240, which would be on the 3rd floor of Villa Building 12. Here’s the map that the front desk cast member gave us, with her notes on it. (I put the red “X” where our room was.) Looks like she told us that the campfire would be held at 8:30pm, and something must have been happening at 1 at the pool.

IMG_5900a.jpg

We drove over to building 12 and I immediately noticed that the clearance to park under the building was very low. I don’t remember the exact height, but just visually I could see that there was no way that our van with a cartop carrier on the roof was going to make it, so I had to park in an outside space. Fortunately, there are a lot of palm trees and other vegetation providing shade around the buildings at Vero or else the van would have gotten super-hot during our few days here, but I wondered if I’d have the same height restriction at Kidani, where I really wanted to park the van out of the sun. Time would tell. Anyway, we were able to find a spot right near the building, so unloading all of our stuff wasn’t much more of a pain than that chore already is.

We couldn’t wait to see the room, and the kids started to run off empty-handed, but Judy reminded them to at least carry an item or two to make productive use of the trip from the van to the room. I of course, decided to carry my camera as my item.
shifty.gif
Don’t worry, I’m sure I carried something else too.

James was the first at our door, eager to check it out!

IMG_5635.jpg

Oh, I see that Frostbite made the trip. He’s the yeti plush that James earned for conquering Everest, back in my 2009 trip report, the “Yeti bribery” chapter .

I squeezed past James to unlock the door and…

…To be continued.

Carp!!! I actually spidey sensed an update at lunch today and was watching between like 12:00 and 12:15............. missed it by thaaaattttttt much!!!! :headache: :sad2:

Woo HOO! Vero Beach arrival! I can't wait to hear what you thought of it.

We stayed in one of the inn rooms. It was a basic DVC studio, but we had oceanview and it was gorgeous.

We are heading to the beach next week for a long weekend and my girls keep asking if we can go to Vero Beach instead. I have a feeling another visit is going to be happening sooner than later.

Aargh I hate cliffhangers :P

Great update, glad to see the yeti made it safely! ;) from the map it looks a well planned resort, I guess we'll have to wait on the Suite itself :D
