Does Disney have a "dark" side???

For the past 27 years DH and I have a history of celebrating special occassions in an over-the-top way (whether milestone birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) -- we met when I was 19 and he was 22, so there's been alot of crazy celebrations over the years.

Anyway, DH is turning 50 the day after we arrive in WDW and I really want go with a grim reaper/black/dark theme -- balloons, cake, anything else I can think of. Is there a place in Disney that will do this?? DH thinks Disney is all about being "happy" and will never expect something like this will be done there, which is only making it that much more fun to plan (if it can be done).

Any help/ideas/suggestion/advice would be super!!

Check out hte Cake Chatter threadon the Restaurant Board, lots of people order custom made Haunted Mansion and Nightmare Before Christmas Themed cakes. You might also check on www.disneyflorist.com for other options that are available.

I was just going through the cake thread -- they have a Halloween one that looks pretty awesome. Just don't want the pumpkin or ghost on it - do they work with you to change decorations on top? Or its "as seen"?

The cakes you see on that thread are custom orders and you can request what you want on them, I don't think I hav eever really seen 2 cakes look the same way. There is alot of info in the first couple of posts, if you don't find the answer, someone will be able to help you.

I think they can do some custom orders at the florist website, you have to dig to find the info, you might also want to call them, tell them what you want and se if they have any suggestions.

I called and other than black latex balloons, and maybe a mylar balloon with 50 on it, she said "we keep within the theme of Disney happy". So I'll just have to make the black balloons work and shop for some decorations that I can pack.

Cakes on the other hand - I'm trying to get creative with although I don't want to go too crazy with it since it's only 3 of us, and I'm taking DH to the Dessert Party that evening for dessert after Yachts Club for dinner.

They wouldn't bring the cake to the Dessert Party would they?? I know the idea of the Dessert Party is about having all you can eat dessert there, but DH just really likes being up-close for the fireworks and that's the only reason why I'm booking a reservation there, so he can have his moment and see Wishes in a more relaxed environment.

I seriously doubt they would bring the cake to the Dessert party, but you can ask. How about ordering one of the small wedding type cakes and have them do it in a dark theme? You could possibly pick that up at Boardwalk Bakery on your way to the Dessert Party.

I wonder if they could make a small cake with black icing and top it with a headstone- or make one shaped like a headstone? Maybe you could come up with a really good epitaph like the ones in the HM graveyard. That, plus black balloons-- sometimes less is more

I would probably do just the cake with a headstone or a skull/crossbones with a big bouquet of black balloons and decorations, and then hopefully find an excuse to leave him at the park with DD so I can head back and decorate the room a little bit. Times like this make me glad I still have a way to go before its my turn...lol.

I would suggest a young, kid theme and go the opposite direction of the grim reaper. Sounds like you guys are crazy and fun, why not remind him that you're only as old as you feel and you can still have as much fun now as you did when you first met! That theme would be easy to do with Disney LOL.

I agree with this. I guess I'm just a stick-in-the-mud but I personally think grim reaper/death themes are kind of sad. Maybe I'm too superstitious!

A "young" theme would be letting him off the hook too easy. LOL. Really don't mean to offend anyone here -- its just been a VERY LONG standing joke amongst us and over the years and even friends/family get involved in the big ones. Some are even annoyed I'm taking him away and not letting them share in the occasion.

Immature? Probably. But we're business professional all year long, so we let our celebrations/special occasions be "no holds barred" and just have alot of fun with it.

That is pretty cool!!! I like the chocolate better than the black even -- although now that you mention it, I'll have to find out if black/red fondant will have a taste to it, or if it'll taste like just a regular 'frosting'. I just always assumed it was just a food dye/coloring that wouldn't alter the taste.

They have to use a ton of it, so it may taste off. I know when I was making cakes and needed to make black, I started with chocolate icing and went from there, but I'm not sure if they do that or not. If you use too much red, it does taste gross. Fondant is usually pre-colored and it just tastes gross anyway.
