AGLET – We're Gonna Tour The World Together! Updated 11/9!!!

Oh my gosh! I just stumbled upon the "trip report" section of the DIS over the past day or two, and this is amazing. Great combo of food reviews and general trip updates! Artist Point looks fantastic - it's my favorite Disney restaurant, and your review has me missing it dearly. Plus, now I have Boma on my list for breakfast. I'm not a huge fan of goat cheese, but for those eggs I could make an exception.

And congratulations on the engagement!!! :goodvibes

Welcome!!! Glad to have you here!!! :goodvibes

Thanks!! We loved Artist Point! The goat cheese eggs are definitely not overwhelmingly goat cheesey, but they are really good! Worth a try!

Thank you!!! :goodvibes

I agree. There is something special about this spot.

And as for the bandaids, you can never have too many fun bandaids. :goodvibes

I really could sit by that fountain for hours! It is just so magical there!

Oh, I definitely agree! I love whimsical bandaids!

Awww, I love those Band Aids! I've had the Hello Kitty ones, and I almost lost my mind the other day when I saw Phineas and Ferb Band Aids...we're going grocery shopping later, and I know those are going to end up in my cart somehow...:rolleyes1

Yay Epcot! I love both of the shirts you bought! I love Mousegear because they have so much Epcot stuff, I always want to buy something, but I never know what to get!

Haha, our pictures always come out weird on SE too! Whenever I wear my Minnie ears, they end up getting cut off, but only partially, so I look like I have these tiny pigtails on the top of my head! :rotfl2:

Ahhh, the Fountain of Nations! One of my favorite Epcot places too! :cool1:

I NEVER SAW THE PHINEAS AND FERB ONES!!!!!!!! That sounds awesome!!!

I'm always a bit overwhelmed by Mousegears too! It's SO big! But I love all of the Epcot merchandise!

Hahahaha I've forgotten to take off my ears too, it comes out weird then! But lately my pictures have been coming out strange no matter what I do! :rotfl:

HAHAHA I love those bandaids! I currently have the Disney princess bandaids myself... what can I say?

MouseGear is SUCH an awesome store. Those shirts are both great! I feel like that was very good advice from Wingnut. Hey, if you can't decide, both will be fine. :thumbsup2

That fountain really is the best. It's so beautiful and peaceful and just perfect.

Can't wait to hear about Jiko! :yay:

The princess ones are cute too!!! I had to have the Muppets ones when I saw them though!!

Oh, I thought it was excellent advice!! Mousegears is definitely awesome!

I love the Fountain of Nations. It really is just perfect, I agree!

love the epcot t-shirts and the Mickey Gummy I want one!

Thanks!!! Hahaha I feel like I'd be eating that gummy for a long time!

Now I see why you said "yes" to Wingnut despite him not liking dole whips -- he said "why don't you just get both shirts". Big points earned, right there. ;)

Hahahaha he is a very good advice-giver!!! :thumbsup2

Another great update! :thumbsup2 I love that EPCOT t-shirt, but I'm not sure I saw it in February...or April, for that matter. What's on the front? Are those buttons? I know they're the old logos for each of the FW pavilions.

You're right, who doesn't stop for a ride on SE on their way out of EPCOT? :confused3 As long as there's no line (and there usually isn't), we tend to always hop on, totally forgetting that the ride is almost twenty minutes long.

Can't wait to hear all about Jiko!

I love the shirts you got!! I really like the green EPCOT one, I might have to look for that one in November!

hahahaha your SE pictures crack me up! :rotfl:

It looks like you guys had a great day!!

And i would feel very weird eating that Mickey gummy! It looks too real!! hahaha

Can't wait to read more! :)

Beaker bandaids?! NO WAY! Clearly I'm out of the loop when it comes to novelty bandaids.

I love your shirts, but those gummies look kind of dated to me. Something about the packaging reminds me of the early 90s.

I have that same problem on Spaceship Earth! I think it has something to do with having long dark hair and how it shows up on the camera. Oh well... I know what my face looks like! :goodvibes

Can't wait to read more! I'm seriously jonesing for some Epcot time now!

Finally caught back up. Great updates and glad you found your hat at last. I really like the aqua t-shirt. Might have to pick one up in October.

Thanks!!! They're kind of like little plasticy rubbery weird circles that cracked as soon as I washed the shirt. But I still love it! :thumbsup2

I always forget the ride is that long too! But it does feel like a requirement every time you're leaving!

Thanks!! I couldn't leave without that one especially!

The Mickey gummy was a bit too disconcerting for my taste, I have to say! :rotfl:

YES! Check out Target, they have a whole slew of awesome bandaids!

Hahaha they do seem like something that would have been around then!

That could be it. It's true, it makes it funnier when the camera turns you into some sort of Picasso painting!

We purposely went to AKL a bit early so that we could wander around and look at the animals another time before dinner (even though we had just been there for breakfast that morning.)

This lobby really is awesome.

I love all of the interesting artifacts and details.

We then headed outside to the savannah, and again, checked out the giraffes and zebras!

The rare and elusive savannah Disney ducks:

"Quack."

The AKL animal viewing area is pretty cool. There were other people out there with us, but with the way it was designed with the different sections, it never felt busy or crowded.

Yes, I know my black sweatshirt and black pants don't match. Sorry, Stacy and Clinton.

Wingnut checked out the sculpture in the lobby for a bit.

Wingnut: "You know, I think that AKL would be a really nice place to stay someday."

Me: Oh really? Because that's EXACTLY what I said the other day.

Wingnut: Well, now I'm saying it too. (This seems like the most appropriate Wingnut smiley to use here: :p)

Me: Well there is that bounceback offer that's been in our room...

Wingnut, as I had anticipated, said no to that idea immediately. But he did promise this:

"We'll come back. But in a year or two. Not right away."

Boo.

By this point, it was almost time for our ADR at Jiko, and so we headed downstairs, excited and hungry for dinner!

Isn't Jiko a gorgeous restaurant?

I really do think that Jiko has one of my favorite ambiance's of all of the Disney restaurants. The bird lamps, the color-changing wall, and the general atmosphere are just awesome.

But we weren't here to just sit and look around! We were here for the even better part of Jiko - the food!!

We settled in to our seats by the sunset wall, and Wingnut decided to try one of the Kenyan coffee/liquor drinks, which was technically one of those after-dinner drinks, but hey, carpe diem.

He thought "it was good, a bit of an experiment for me as I'd never had liquored coffee before. It wasn't bad."

I was especially excited for Jiko this time around because my allergy concerns of the year before were gone (spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, et cetera, if you're just joining us!), and so I was free to order at will!

We started with the Jiko bread and butter basket, which includes a (I think) honey wheat bread and a grain bread, and is accompanied by tandoori butter.

We both really enjoyed the bread and butter basket. Both breads were warm and flavorful, and the butter was a nice break from the typical Disney salted butter slab. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

W: I would eat that bread as a meal. A meal of the tandoori butter, and the bread with the flax seeds that aren't exactly on the bread. They're just on there until you pick the bread up, and then they fall off.

But, of course, we did not just make a meal out of butter and bread!

For our appetizers, Wingnut was STILL feeling the appetizer envy from Artist Point, and chose the Roasted Beet Salad - blackberry shiraz vinaigrette, pistacio-crusted goat cheese and serrano ham.

He thought that the beets were on a par with Artist Point's beets, he enjoyed them a lot, saying that it was a very good dish.

(Personally, I liked AP's version better ;) )

I had been very torn between getting the boar appetizer that Wingnut had loved so much the year before, or a sweet potato soup.

Not boar:

This was, to be exact, Puree of Sweet Potato Soup - with pineapple, and red pepper with curry-whipped cream and Plantain fries. I really enjoyed it, the flavors were excellent. However, it turned out to be a bit of an ordering mistake for me.

You'd probably noticed that throughout the trip, I had ordered cinnamon and other spiced items pretty much with abandon. By this point, I was getting confident that the allergy had completely passed, and what's a bit of curry whipped cream?

By the time I was around 2/3 of the way into this soup, I realized I had either hit my spice threshold for the week, or I had found a variety of curry I was not yet immune to. My reaction was extremely slight, but I took that as a bit of a figurative Yield sign for the rest of the meal, and was a bit wary of the spices going forward.

For his entree, Wingnut OF COURSE went with the dish he literally has been talking about since last December - the Seared Barbarie Duck Breast - Potato and Spinach Masala, Royal Trumpet Mushrooms, and Port Emulsion.

W: "Probably the greatest thing on the planet. I loved the African/Indian spiced mushroom and spinach combination."

I had chosen the Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon - with sweet corn risotto, roasted mushrooms and South African Cabernet Reduction.

This was a very good steak, I liked the flavors a lot. The risotto actually was one of my favorite parts of the dish, it was really good.

Originally for dessert, I had really wanted to try the Parsnip Creme Brulee, because really, where else are you ever going to have THAT? But the allergy concerns scared me off, as it seemed to be heavily-spiced, and so I went with the dessert with the least amount of spice potential: the cheesecake.

While this was not something that I would have ordinarily chosen to end our meal at Jiko with (it seemed a bit boring on the menu description), it was actually one of my favorite parts of the meal. I really liked the flavors, it seemed to be a ricotta-based cheesecake, with cherries on top. And a bit of gold leaf, because Jiko is all fancy like that.

DF tried my dessert, and really enjoyed it as well: "Your cheesecake was good. I really liked it. The cherries were nice and not too sweet."

For his dessert selection, Wingnut chose the Coconut Bread Pudding - Warm bread pudding with caramel rum sauce, toasted coconut and caramel ice cream.

He really enjoyed this dessert as well. "It was really good, but the actual highlight was the caramel ice cream. The bread pudding just left a bit to be desired, it was a bit dry and could have been sweeter. The ice cream was flavorful and refreshing."

After our dessert, we were bought out a little post-dessert treat of cookies, complement of Jiko!

We really liked these, they were a nice chocolatey cookie (they tasted just like cake mix cookies, actually!), and we very quickly devoured both.

Overall, we both really enjoyed our meal at Jiko. It is very solidly one of Wingnut's favorite restaurants in Disney. I definitely love it, but it does now have some tough competition in my mind between California Grill and Artist Point. But Jiko wins in the atmosphere category for me, hands down. It is safe to say that we will definitely be returning to Jiko again in the future!

After our wonderful meal, we headed out to the bus stops to go to Epcot for Illuminations and EMH's! I noticed that the bus seemed a bit more crowded than I had hoped, but figured that it would be fine.

When we pulled up at Epcot, we got off the bus and started walking towards the bag check area. This was when we were instantly able to see that Epcot was completely and entirely PACKED. The line for bag check extended out until approximately forever, and more and more people just kept arriving from the busses, monorail, tram, everywhere.

While I had really wanted to see Illuminations at least once during our trip, I just knew that it wasn't worth it to battle this level of crowd. And once we had stayed for the show, leaving afterwards was just going to be exponentially more difficult. DF left the decision up to me, and I steered us in the direction of the shortest bag check line that I could find, and then we veered left to go straight over to the monorail.

It was a quick trip back to the Polynesian, where we packed :-)sad:) in anticipation of checking out bright and early the next morning before breakfast :-)sad::sad:).

Wingnut, as I had anticipated, said no to that idea immediately. But he did promise this:

"We'll come back. But in a year or two. Not right away."

Boo.

We certainly loved our stay there! Hope his happens for you. :)

The night before leaving takes on a sad air, no matter how much you fight it off with park fun. :sad1:

Your Jiko meal looks wonderful!! I really wish I could convince my hubby to give it another shot as I think we just had a bad experience in '09. I think we would enjoy it based on all the recent reviews!!

I'm sad you weren't able to see Illuminations! We didn't get to it in '09 either and was so sad about it! But then it was my hubby's first trip so he has never seen it and I haven't seen it for YEARSSSS!!! Hopefully your next trip will be sooner than later and AKL will come into play for you!

I really have to try Jiko! My fella is itching to go there, but for some reason I keep putting it on the "next time" list. Silly me!

How sad that you had to miss the EMHs and Illuminations, but I totally would have done the same thing.

Oh, those last-night-at-Disney blues. The gloom! The despair! The misery! (I am nothing if not dramatic!) :rotfl:

Wow, Jiko looks awesome!
Too bad about Epcot being so busy :(
I can't believe it's almost over and you're heading back to pack!

I had to laugh that you apologized to Stacy and Clinton. I often get dressed and say "I hope that Stacy and Clinton don't pop out of the bushes today" :lmao:

Jiko looks beautiful! Most of the AKL restaurants aren't really on my radar because it's kind of inconvenient to get to (dragging a 5 year old over there for dinner :scared1:). But I'll have to keep them in mind. The caramel ice cream looked amazing, and so did your filet!

I started a new job this week, and there's a beet salad with goat cheese on the menu there. I of course thought of you.

I'm sad that the trip is almost over!

**I promise that I will get to TR-related replies soon, but I just had to interrupt the regularly-scheduled programming to announce that Wingnut proposed to me last night!!!!!!!!!!** :yay::yay::yay:

(The ring is from my family, and is from the 1920's!)

He proposed during dinner, which he had cooked. (We started with tomato and mozzarella salad, then had steak, penne vodka, and roasted squash - sorry, no food photos this time!)

(Or as my friend said when I told her about our engagement: "It really just isn't a proposal without steak, in my opinion." :thumbsup2)

This seemed like an appropriate picture to put here :goodvibes

And, obviously, it just wouldn't be me if I didn't incorporate the Muppets SOMEWHERE.

What a beautiful ring! Congrats on your engagement! Really enjoying your TR!

I love Jiko!

Boo about the allergy snafu, but glad it wasn't bad!

:( I would have unfortunately made the same decision NOT to go into EPCOT with it being that crowded as well! It's sad!

LOVED your Jiko review. Can't wait to try it.

BTW - Stacey and Clinton would run me down and beat with a coat hanger if they saw some of the stuff I wear.

 on having to pack and leave.

Am I seeing an AKL Disneymoon in the works ??? I hear not_joanna_eggs rents points ..... LOL.

Seriously, though. Check into renting points. It really IS cheaper.

Jiko sounds like it is so good, but I'm so scared to go there! I'm afraid everything is a little too exotic for me! I always read such great reviews of it, I'd love to try it someday! :thumbsup2

I hope you get to stay at AKL someday, it is such a beautiful resort! :lovestruc

Ooooh, tempting me with Jiko! Rey & I rented points for AKL for three nights in November and we already have a Sanaa reservation, but we may just have to try Jiko too if we have enough money! :thumbsup2

Your Jiko meal looks amazing. Yum! I think that beet app looks better than the AP one. It seems to have more going on. Very yummy looking desserts indeed.

As far as Stacy and Clinton, they always say, "It doesn't have to match. It just has to go".

I love the AKL too. I hope you get your wish to stay there sooner rather than later.

I had to run into Wal-Mart last night to pick something up - saw this and IMMEDIATELY thought of you for some reason :rotfl2:

Sorry if the photo is HUGE - photobucket isn't cooperating with me this evening...
