Contracts with Unusual Numbers of Points

Hi everyone,

We've got a resale contract pending ROFR and I've been looking at the boards almost daily just to see how things are going with everyone & keep myself occupied during the wait! I also seem to have developed an obsession for checking resale listings at two brokers I have bookmarked. Why am I doing this!? I already have a pending contract! I have no idea. I think I'm going insane during the ROFR wait. ANYWAY..... I have noticed some contracts listed for what seem to be unusual points numbers. Like 41 points, 134 points, etc. This is not the number of banked or borrowed points (which I realize could always be at any number depending on what is needed for vacation plans), but the number of points on the contract itself. How is it that people have contracts with these numbers? Have they sold off part of the contract earlier (I didn't think was possible)? Or did they buy direct from Disney with these unusual numbers? I am just curious.

When the contract was purchased direct from Disney (at some point all contracts are direct from Disney), the to-be-owner probably calculated how many points they would need for X many days in a specific resort and villa size.

We bought enough points to stay in a 1-BR for 7 nights during Magic season -- 268! I guess we did not believe that DVC would do a point re-allocation and mess us up!!

It doesn't matter now, since we have done a couple of small add-ons. We found out that we didn't buy enough points in the first place.

Before Disney did the point values over many people bought enough points for a 5 night stay Sunday to Friday in a specific room size at their home resort. In those days weeknights were significantly less than weekend nights. Often the two weekend nights, Friday and Saturday nights, would equal the same number of points as five weeknights.

That's why the odd number of points on some contracts. Your contract with 134 points might have been enough for 6 nights in a one bedroom at Disney's Old Key West or Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort since it is not divisible by 5.

One other theory (that quite frankly makes less sense than what was posted here) is that people bought with a budget in mind. So they went in saying "I want to spend $10,000, how many points will that buy me?" Sounds plausible enough that maybe someone, somewhere did this.

But in all likelihood, the theories above are probably correct. That is a big tactic that timeshare salespeople use. They get you to admit that it would be sooooooooo nice to stay X number of days at Y resort. Then before you know it they are pricing out the package. You say, "hold on a sec, I don't want to spend that much." And they say, "but you just told me that this is where you wanted to stay. This is going to be what it takes to get you the vacation that you want." And before you know it you are sitting with their finance guy giving them your credit card information.

It's possible, too, they had to buy more points after the reallocations to be able to take the vacation they always used to but now cost more points. They probably bought just enough extra points to cover the new cost.

I split our AKV purchase into 49 and 52 points. The numbers worked out for certain stays if I ever wanted to sell. This was done prior to DVC doing reallocations. Once that happened then they could just have well been 50 point contracts.

we have a 48pt contract at OKW because that's all the points they had left in our UY at the time of our add on. So someone else may have fallen into the same issue at their time of purchase or add on.

Interesting feedback, thanks folks! I didn't realize Disney was willing to sell in 'odd' numbers - I thought they were always by 10s (or at least by 5s). Apparently it's not all that unusual - I seem to see these different numbers fairly regularly, but it surprised me. Thanks again for the responses!/KSL

When I wanted to add on some points and called my Disney guy I asked if I could buy 52 points at AKV and he said, "Heck yes" - and I did. For the life of me I can't figure how I came up with that number, but I have them!

And so of course there is always the explanation that people randomly choose numbers not in multiples of 10 just to be different.
