ok so I got a job at the hard rock hotel at universal orlando, and the day after I got hired at the wilderness lodge hotel at disney. my job at hr is to pass out towels and I get 8.00 an hour and tips and I heard u can move up fast. at the wl i get 8.00 an hour and im a pool attendant full time from 5am to 1 pm 5 days a week. Im gonna stay with either company for a long time so please help me pick the right one. I highly want to move up and I wanna know which job will give me more of a chance to do so, because I want to move out soon and be able to live comfortably in the future..

also just letting who ever reads this know my current jobs 2 weeks are up by the 14th so i need a decision made i would say by the 10th. because i havent done orientation yet for either job. but i did onboarding for disney and universal simply told me congrats you have the job we will set up orientation soon

You will get the best info from people who work at these places. Hard for an outsider to give advice with so little info.

I worked for Disneyland for about 5 years before i quit a few months ago. I was in Outdoor Vending(those carts around the park selling snacks). I moved from being a cashier to stocker/steward within a year($.50 extra per hour) and 3 years in, i became a lead ($1.50 extra per hour). For me, i found moving up was a bit more challenging than i thought, as i wasnt much of a suck up, but i was definitely a hard worker. I went above and beyond. After i hit this stage, i found it VERY VERY difficult to move up. There are soo many requirements that the managers want you to do. If u have a degree in business management, then u will move up quickly. They sit u through a mock trial styled interview. a few of the people i know that went through it tried 3-4 times before they actually got it. But if u do happen to get it, its probably the best training u will get it. I however just found the job to stressful and quit to pursue another career.

Disney also gives a lot of benefits as well. i think Florida, there is a private spa club for Cast members only. Though im not sure if its true... i would be soo jealous...

Here is my best suggestion:

Work on basic English grammar. Capitalize at the beginning of sentences. Use proper words, such a which (and not witch unless referring to the pointy hat lady). Don't ever say 'wanna'. I want to or I'd like to are much better.

Working on that while working either of these jobs will help you get much further.

I vote neither. Neither will ever give you a dream job. You'll work your butt off in the hot summer sun, be completely under appreciated, and never make enough to cover the bills.

Go find yourself a real job if you want a comfortable living. This isn't South Beach or Vegas.

Congratulations on being offered both! It is hard for me to give any opinion as I've not worked at either place. But it sounds like HR might be better, if it is the same amount of hours as Disney.

Now, as far as the someone you know living the good life. It may not be the case with this person (obviously I don't know them at all), but just because they look like they are living high on the hog doesn't mean it is because they are earning alot of money. It could very well they are just very in debt, or spend all they have (no savings/retirement/emergency).

I know people like this. New cars, mortgaged to the hilt, dinner out many times a week. And then they ask to borrow from me to pay their electric! Meanwhile, I look like I have almost nothing. Small house (paid for), used car (paid for), nice but not high end fashion clothing, only really eat out for special occasions. But I work hard and pay my way without any assistance and am on a great path towards retirement. I feel I have a good balance of work & play.

I guess my point is, to focus on what YOU want, don't compare what someone else has. Write down what you want in say, 10 years. Figure out how much that would cost, then you know what kind of employment you need to make that goal a reality.

thank you. i really need a smart choice for that reason, where am i going to be in 10 years. because i either want to move up or atleast get enough experience to get another good hotel job outside of the company, and yes i love hotels and could easily work for them as a life long carrer. i write screenplays at home so if that ever fails hotels are my back up plan. also i like the hour for disney simply because i can get an education in buisness since i would be done by 1 everyday.im just scared that disney isnt everything they make it out to be and the hard rock wont consider me again. i love both of thee hotels and they are my personal favorite from each park.and they guy i talked about is my best friends dad and hes been in the company for 25 years so disney mmight be a slow moving process. if anyone has worked at either job please give me some pros and cons about it because im 100% taking one of them so please dont try and change my mind and also everyone be mature. this job is going to be with me possibly for years so its an important choice to me.

i would say its a tie between both of them because at disney they seem happy but hard working, hard rock seems happy but a little bit laid back and lazy. but ive heard that disney is more strict but thats not a good thing if everyone at the hard rock is lazy and immature.

What do you want to be when you grow up? And I'm not being sarcastic -- I'm in my 40s and people still ask me that!

You need to stick with the job that will get you to the job you really want to be doing.

You mentioned screenwriting -- if that's your goal, then Disney is going to give you a better opportunity to move in that direction. Not because they make movies, but because the theme parks have more live, scripted entertainment. At Disney, you can start out as the "pool boy" (for lack of a better term ...) and work your way into other areas. Less of a likelihood with Hard Rock.

Here's an example .... you're handing out towels at WL for an hourly rate. During the busiest times of year -- Christmas, Easter, etc -- you grab some extra hours on the "Extra Hour Hotline". One of those assignments is working parade crowd control. So, you do that a couple of times and you meet some of the people who work on the parades. Maybe you audition to be a Character or a parade performer, if for no other reason than to meet a few more folks in Entertainment. Every time there's a big special event, you grab some extra hours, and now you're meeting more Entertainment CMs. A year or so in, maybe you go for a professional internship in Entertainment, or maybe you ask someone you've met along the way who they know in one of the Creative or Show Production areas who might let you shadow them for a day, or even just meet with you for a half-hour to talk about what it is you want to do. When you meet with them, you ask if there's any way you could maybe meet one of the Disney Show Directors, because they're the guys who actually write the live shows and you'd love to find out how they got THEIR jobs. Someone encourages you to submit a resume and a writing sample for the Show Director Bench, so that when they need scripts for special events or conventions, you could be considered. And you move up throughout the Entertainment or Convention ranks, meeting people and writing show treatments along the way. Ten or fifteen years from now, you're writing convention shows or scripting stage shows ... all of which started with a job handing out towels at WL.

It's not easy, but that kind of job growth is possible at Disney, if you spend the time and energy working at it.

I don't know that you can take a similar route working at Hard Rock. IMO, by sheer size and diversity of product, Disney will provide you with more opportunities than Hard Rock will. But it will be up to you to make the most of those opportunities. It's still all on you.

I think the "laid back and lazy" is more cool and chill. I've stayed at the Hard Rock numerous times and love their cool vibe. Beats the pixie dust, which I'm sort of allergic to...

Both are jobs, not stepping stones to a career. If you plan on pursuing a career in screenwriting I'd advise schooling and networking. You'll need a portfolio and an agent and a LOT of luck!
