My DH, DS, DD and myself are going on the 7 day Western Carribean cruise on June 9. My DFIL and DMIL are going with us. This trip has been booked for a year and NOW they (the inlaws) decide to get super worried about traveling to Cozumel and Costa Maya. They are convinced we are going to be kidnapped or taken over by a drug cartel...

Can some recent cruisers give me some ideas on how you felt in these areas so I can somehow convince them we will just fine? This is what I get for inviting my inlaws to travel with me...

They can always stay on the ship at these ports if they're that worried.

There is a little shopping mall right at the port in Cozumel. It is easy to get off, walk around a little, and get back on....or just stay on the ship. I don't recommend getting off the tourist track on this island, but you're probably ok in the tourist areas or on a DCL excursion.

Tell them that DCL will not go any place where folks will be at any more risk than they are at home. I have done 9 cruises and have never felt unsafe. I would however do a DCL excusion if there are still fears.

As the last posted pointed out if your in-laws are that uncomfotable they can always stay onboard and enjoy a relaxing day.

My parents just got back from Costa Maya and had a lovely time. My mom is super-paranoid and they just stayed at their resort the whole time (they were not on a cruise). They never felt in danger in any way. I think as long as you stick to scheduled tours and don't venture out on your own, you have nothing to worry about.

They can get off the ship in Costa Maya and just stay inside the port area. There's a large swimming pool, restaurants and bars and shopping...and it's all enclosed.

Cozumel.....tell them it's just a small island, with no drug cartel. If the cartel wanted to go to Cozumel, they'd have to arrive by boat, which would be kind of obvious. And again, all of the shops, etc, are right on the front street facing the ocean, at the pier. There will be more Americans and other cruisers there than natives.

I feel your pain! While my parents are not going with us, my DM is frantic something is going to happen in Mexico. I keep telling her Disney would not do anything dangerous. Good Luck!!

Just got back from Cozumel and had a great time never felt like some one was going to do harm to my wife or I.:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

My mother is a native Minnesotan, with only limited knowledge of a couple spanish words, live in Mexico 3 months a year for 15 years. Never had into an issue.
