Need suggestions for new vacuum cleaner for under $200.00

Shark. With luck stacking codes and bucks back at Kohl's, you can get a good one for under $150.

Yesterday we bought a $60 Bissell upright vacuum at Walmart. I think it's the Turbo model. Considering we didn't take down our (real) Christmas tree till yesterday, it did a marvelous job cleaning up a small mountain of sprills on our thick living room carpet. Our old vac had been slowly dying for several months. Our carpet hasn't looked this good, or been this clean, in months. It got up some ground in dirt that the old vac didn't touch.

While I would have loved an Oreck or Dyson or other top of the line vacuum, it wasn't in the budget. This one works much better than the one we had, even when that one was new. (our old one was a Hoover upright from Sears) I can't speak of long term use, but it did well yesterday, is easy to empty, and the filters are all washable and in places that are easy to replace. No fiddling with a million tiny pieces to get to them to clean or replace them, like with some other vacuums I've worked with! (I used to work as a maid in a hotel...I LOATHE taking apart a vacuum!)

I highly recommend the Sears progressive cannister. I know you said under $200 but if you hit it just right, you might luck into an open box or a floor model or reconditioned one. They are rated very well and last a really long time. My first one lasted 15 years and still worked but I really needed to upgrade to one with a HEPA filter because of allergies. Just throwing it out there as an idea. I love the versatility that a canister offers over an upright. I had a 2nd vac that was an upright for a couple of years and I hated that thing. it was a pain. I used to go the other floor and bring the canister up. I like that you can put the floor piece on the canister and use it on the hardwoods or the brush and dust around the ceiling, baseboards and windows...so much more versatile. Good Luck with your decision. :goodvibes

We got a Shark Navigator. Used it last night and we had no idea that our old one was doing such a bad job! Seems to be a good vacuum. Thanks for everyones suggestions.:goodvibes

Yup, I just asked the same question and everyone I talked to said Shark navigator so that is what we ended up with too.
