Where my boys at?

Does anyone else think that the PRINCES are under represented as a WHOLE in disneyland? I mean I know the Princesses are a big attraction and I am not suggesting they be changed. What I am saying is that Disney doesn't seem to put much marketing toward boys with regards to the Princes or other Hero characters.

Sure Buzz and Woody, but what about Tarzan, Aladdin, Hercules, Flynn Ryder, Jim Hawkins?

I would LOVE to see some focus on these characters and they character traits they can bring to our youth.

Also following along the lines of the 'Villians' they could do a "Heroes" line. I would also like to see a 'Sidekicks' line as well, Love me some Mushu, and Genie!!

The problem is demand. For every boy that wants to be a pirate etc., there are 50 girls that want to be princesses. Furthermore, for the things the boys love (Jedi Training, Pirates etc.) the girls also enjoy so theres few boys only events.

With four sons that all started at Disney parks around four years old, the top 10 things they cared about were:

1. Pirates
2. Jedi Knights

How on earth do they know this? My son would LOVE to have princes around. Most (many? some? a few? SOME!) of the princesses are only princesses because of their husbands anyway, why not show them?

The first thing the kid's going to get on this upcoming trip is a Prince Phillip sword, if they still have them, because the TWO he has owned are so broken. They are foam and don't last forever... He loves pretending to be a prince with that and the shield...

He also loves to be a pirate. They aren't mutually exclusive.

Thanx for the little-facts-of-life explanation, Hydroguy. As a mother to 4 girls, no boys, I may be able to use that info next time I take my nephew to DL, to make things funner for him. (we never have even considered sitting thru Jedi Knight training, but will wait for over an hour to spend 5 minutes with Princesses) --that also explains why he does "weird" (weird to me ) things, like boxing the thin air, or why every long innanimate object is his makeshift sword.

hee hee hee, that cracks me up. The only "boy" I have experience with is DH, and his imaginary objects are always a baseball bat or a golf club. I never realized it was the same type of concept as my nephew's imaginary "tools", just a different fantasy. --I'll have to quit thinking DN is so weird.

Hmmmm. Disney princes wear nice clothes, comb their hair nicely and dance in parades with princesses. I think, really, those are not the kind of princes most boys would be interested in.

If the princes at Disney got to ride horses, hunt animals, shoot a bow and arrow, fight with swords, go on adventures, and never have to dance, then IMO you could get boys interested. But that is not how Disney princes are portrayed. Pirates and Jedi Knights are portrayed this way.

ITA. Not all boys are the same, either, and we really offer boys very little variation in role models and options for role playing. I have three sons, and the middle one especially would LOVE to be a prince and looks forward to the prince quickie makeover at the BBB. His elder brother, a boy's boy if there ever was one, still likes the idea of the glitter they will put in his hair at BBB and thinks it's great that he will get a foam dword and shield out of the deal.
My middle guy also ADORES the Disney fairy world and was SO disappointed that there is not Terence merchandise or a costume for him to buy, but meanwhile everyone makes sure girls feel included at the pirate and Jedi events and there's plenty of girl-friendly (read: pink) merchandise at these outlets.
There is some argument for demand, but there is also self-fulfilling prophecy. Exposure and options, or the lack there of, shape preferences, too.

I am going to venture to guess...it's because women cannot control themselves. Tarzan and Jack Sparrow have both been reigned in due to unruly female fans - heck, even the Dwarfs had a following of freaky ladies who reached into their costumes.
