A Birthday Trip without a Birthday - 2/16: Conclusion and Bonus Birthday Tea

Hi Magdalene!
Ok I swear I commented on your last update but don't see it?? I wrote about Cinnabonn! I must have closed out of the thread before I hit submit.... errr......

Any way I LOVE the theming of Universal! Very cool! :thumbsup2 I love old buildings very neat how they replecated them. Are there shops in most of them? I really like at DS the area of New York but always thought it would be nice if some of the store fronts would actually have stores in them. It seems to me like that area is so bare you know?

Luckily it is just a very easy walk from one park to the other, with no bag check between. So, soon we were at the other entrance:

Just pausing to once again ponder a world without bag checks. Ahhh....:goodvibes

And at first corner we met these lovely – albeit rather yellow – people:

Back to the Mummy: It started with a nicely themed queue walking through the inner corridors of a pyramid (at least that was my interpretation) and then you board the train. And then strange things happen. I was so amazed. This was so different from what I expected! I really don't want to spoil it, but in the end I think this ride gets the #3 spot for me after Forbidden Journey and Spiderman. And I must say that when we got back and rode RnRC again, it really paled in comparison.

Wow! Come on, you can spoil it just a little...right?

The ride itself was surprisingly entertaining. I really liked that attraction a lot as well. It helped that we had a good boat captain as they deliver a spiel and just as with the Jungle Cruise I am sure that there are differences in quality.

I was in Universal way back in my college days and remember enjoying this ride. Shame to see it go...did they still have the part where the shark swims under your boat and it rises up out of the water a bit? That cracked me up.

But by the time we got off Jaws it had stopped raining. Perfect timing!

Man, you girls are good!

Glad you had an opportunity to experience Jaws. It's been a long time since I've been to Universal, so I really enjoying your descriptions!

Ah, the mummy! I admit, I never thought to compare it to RnRC. I do like that mummy quite a bit though and am really glad you enjoyed it. I am very jealous of your visit with Jaws. It was closed due to weather when we were there and if it's going away..we'll never get to ride it. Sadness! However your rumors (which I'd not heard, not being up on all things universal at the moment) do lessen my disappointment. A Gringotts coaster, now THAT would be cool. I'm going to need to get up to speed! Fun and productive quick visit to Universal before lunch, looking forward to seeing what you thought of Mythos.

Oh, I would love to know what you had to say about Cinnabon!! :goodvibes Sorry that you lost what you wrote...

Yes, the theming is really very cool! I don't know why, but I expected it too look cheaper. But instead I think the New York area really is much better than the comparable area at DHS. I am not sure whether there are any stores. I know that there was one at the exit of the Mummy where you could buy all kind of Egyptian jewelry and stuff like that. And then there were restaurants in those buildings. All in all, it looked much more like a lived in street than at DHS.

The thing is, I think for a studio, DHS's boring look is quite authentic. When I was in LA I did a tour at the Warner Brother Studios which was excellent and there the city streets do look very bare - because they are just facades which get "dressed up" for whatever film they are making. So a bakery could be a dry cleaner in the next film etc... And they are just fronts.

However, for a theme park, more depth to the buildings certainly works much better.

Just pausing to once again ponder a world without bag checks. Ahhh....:goodvibes

:goodvibes Yes, isn't it sad that this is worth mentioning!! Considering that we grew up in a world where people would have laughed about a suggestion of bag checks at theme parks...

Wow! Come on, you can spoil it just a little...right?

I really don't want to! I think I loved it so much because I was so surprised! And, to be honest, I would be afraid of getting the details mixed up by now and telling you something which is not correct. One quick ride a few months ago is not enough to remember lots of details...

I was in Universal way back in my college days and remember enjoying this ride. Shame to see it go...did they still have the part where the shark swims under your boat and it rises up out of the water a bit? That cracked me up.

I am not sure whether the shark did rise the boat... But I remember that at one point I was quite shocked by the shark's appearance.

It really is a great ride and I am sad that it is going away. But there is promise of really cool new things happening, so I guess I am ok with it.

Man, you girls are good!

Yes, we did quite well that day to avoid the rain - at least until park close...

I am glad that you are enjoying our day at Universal! I can really recommend to revisit it! :goodvibes

I think the comparison with RnRC comes from it being an indoor coaster without being so apparent about being a coaster.

What a shame that you did not get to see Jaws, it was really quite a good attraction. I think what impressed me about it is that it was one of the original attractions and it did hold up so well and still was so enjoyable.

Those Harry Potter expansion rumours are quite exciting! The latest rumour about that Gringotts attraction is that it is a coaster combined with elements of Spiderman. Sounds very intriguing. And the good thing is that it supposedly has a very ambitious time frame. If I remember correctly, it is supposed to open in 2015...

Great Update of Universal !!! Can't wait to see it this year !!!

Thanks Rosie! I really hope that you will have a fantastic trip there this year!!

Oh, I would love to know what you had to say about Cinnabon!! Sorry that you lost what you wrote...

We have a Cinnabon at our local mall and everytime we go DD asks to get one :rotfl: We almost always end up sharing one because they are so huge. Although I would not have any problem eating one by myself...:rolleyes1 just saying...

You can buy Mini Bons but to me that's not enough :rotfl: The cinnamon sticks they have are really good and they come with the frosting to dip them in... YUM! But I prefer the HUGH Cinnabon myself.

Ok, now I am getting hungry!!! :rotfl:

Katharina and I shared one as well, and I think that was just the right amount for us. They are very sweet!!

Which btw reminds me - I had an interesting experience yesterday with your Christmas candy. I had a KitKat bar at work yesterday and yesterday evening I looked at the bowl where I keep your candy (it is slowly getting less... :rolleyes1) and saw a tiny KitKat bar in there as well. And when I tried that, it seemed much sweeter than the one I had earlier in the day (which was made in Germany). Now I am wondering whether American candy is indeed sweeter than German candy??? Need to experiment more with all the delicious stuff you sent me!! :goodvibes

Thats funny you said that about the candy, I noticed that too! Also Dave and I really noticed that soda here and soda in Germany is really different too. The soda here in the US is MUCH sweeter that in Germany. We prefer Germany soda to the US....:rotfl: It must have something to do with what they use to sweeten the product. ALOT of high fructose corn syrup is used here in products.. Not sure if that is allowed to be used in Germany.

I did manage to find Mexo Mix on line and ordered it for everyone for Christmas. I ordered Fanta as well much better than the US Fanta. ;) A little pricey but worth seeing everyones reaction! DD has yet to drink any of her's she prefers to sip mine...

Any time you want more US candy or there is something you want to try not available in Germany just ask and I'll send... :)

Take care.

Nice update Magdalene!

These pictures of Universal make me think of DHS, with the cityscape and store fronts and everything.

I'm really curious about those weird decorations piled up at that bus stop....strange.

Too bad you didn't do a "find Katharina" game for these updates, I noticed the back of her head in a couple of your pictures.

They were really well done, I was quite impressed.

I felt quite tempted to post a number of sightings as well. I didn't notice it when Magdalene showed me the pictures for the first time, only on the ones from WWOHP. My DH takes a lot of pitctures, as he has much longer legs than me and walks faster, I'm used to not hang around while he takes pictures but to slowly walk ahaed. So I guess I did this with Magdalene as well...

Here we mainly use sugar - since corn isn't commonly grown in the EU, there is no need to subsidise the corn farmers... Not that we don't have ridiculous farm subsidies here of our own. I still remember the "milk lakes" and "butter mountains" of the late 80s.

But I wonder whether the difference in soda might not also be due to the fact that we mainly drink our soda without ice (just cold from the fridge). If something is not as ice cold, it tastes of more, so it does not need as much sugar and the taste also won't be diluted by the melting ice.

Your DD is pretty smart, just sipping your German soda!! :lmao:

And thanks for the offer for the US candy!! At the moment I still have plenty (as well as my own German Christmas candy). I must say my favourite are so far these little bell shaped chocolates. :cloud9:

Nice update Magdalene!

These pictures of Universal make me think of DHS, with the cityscape and store fronts and everything.

Thanks, it is similar to DHS - not a surprise. DHS was originally built as the "answer" to Universal coming to Orlando. However, Eisner demanded that it's be fast tracked and they managed to open before Universal Studios Orlando did. But that explains a little bit that DHS sometimes appears a bit thrown together - because it really was.

We did not really explore that much over there, but that is something which I truly hope to get done next time I am in Orlando.

I'm really curious about those weird decorations piled up at that bus stop....strange.

I hope Cynthia will be able to shed some light on this - or someone else who knows Universal!!

Yes, I really could have done a contest here.... I had not noticed Katharina in this update yet. Need to go back and look at the pictures. I remember how surprised I was to see Katharina so often when I posted the first Harry Potter update.

They were really well done, I was quite impressed.

Yes, I think you actually alerted me to them because I would have just walked past them... :rolleyes1 :goodvibes

Part 6: More of the Studios

We continued on to the “World Expo” area. The first ride there was “Men in Black”.

DSC09371.jpg

Here we chose to get into the Single Rider Line. Universal offers this at a lot of attractions and here it was great. We walked right up to loading platform and were put onto the same ride vehicle as a party of two. I don't know whether the Team Member did mistake us for the Express Line... This ride is simlar to Buzz Light Year, but you don't shoot Emperor Zurg's “Z”s, but aliens. To be honest, I did not figure out this ride and since I had no idea what I was supposed to do (even when I thought I had managed to hit an alien, I did not get points, while I got points when I had no idea what they were for). So, this really wasn't that enjoyable for me. I think this type of ride just isn't really my thing. But the ride itself looks very cool!

Next attraction and just a short hop away was the Simpson's ride:

This is a simulator ride, like Star Tours, but the simulator is open on the top and you are looking out to a big screen. It has a rather strange set up since there are several lines leading to different areas and the team members seem to send people in the different lines to distribute them evenly. There are lots of fun things to see in line:

As a DVC owner I especially liked this:

The ride is fun – you visit Krustyland with the Simpsons. Things go wrong... But I can understand if people think this is too much for them. I think for me it was definitely just what I still could tolerate before I would start to suffer from motion sickness. Definitely an attraction which I could not ride more often than once a day. But I really liked it!

From the Simpsons you have a nice view back across the lake:

Next stop was the Kwik-E-Mart, the Simpsons souvenir shop:

The nice thing about shops at Universal is that they all sell the merchandise appropriate for their area. Only in the entrance area shops can you get stuff from all over the park (including Simpsons merchandise at IoA for example). But otherwise, Seuss merchandise was in Seuss Landing, Harry Potter in WWoHP, Egyptian themed stuff at the Mummy etc. It made shopping really interesting!!

The last attraction we wanted to do at Universal Studios was E.T. This is is an area called “Woody Wookpecker’s Kid Zone” It is a dead end and seemed rather congested to us, so we mainly just tried to find the ride as soon as possible. E.T. is a film I have seen, but never really liked that much. I just don't see the cute factor in E.T. I guess that may be the reason why the ride did not really speak to me. It is a very nicely done dark ride with rather elaborate scenery (think more Peter Pan than Snow White) and you are flying around on a bicycle. That is all very neat and I am glad that I did it once, but it is nothing that I would wait in a long line for...

After that we arrived in the Hollywood area of Universal Studios:

It all looks much more realistic than at DHS. But I really liked it and would have loved to have more time to explore a bit instead of just rush through. But we knew that we would have to leave some things for a future trip.

In the next update it is finally time for lunch!

Great Universal Update !!! Samantha is going to Europe this Summer as a Student Ambassador and one of the Countries is Germany!!! We will find out more later this month !!!!

Fun update. I prefer MIB to Buzz but that may well be to being surrounded by boys who loved shooting at aliens. We went on it at least twice possibly 3 times. ET is cute but I think it's in a horrible location and sadly, a bit dated. I do like the movie so it makes me smile to go on it but not something I want to wait all that long for either. I'm not sure there is all that much to explore in the Hollywood area, I think most of the buildings are backs or parts of other rides but it is such a pretty pretty park of the park!

2015 for Gringotts huh, I'll have to file that away for reference! I can only imagine how cool a ride based on it would be.

We received some KitKat's from my brother for the kids (and Milka and Kinder) for the holidays...if it isn't all gone (I think it is) I might pick up a US kit kat and compare! I bet I'd like the German version better.

Magdalene I'm so glad you took this picture! We still have drive in diners like this here in Milwaukee. One is called Leon's and was the inspirational diner for Arnold's for the TV show Happy Days.

800px-Leon%27s_Frozen_Custard.jpg

It's still around! But it's way on the other side of town and believe it or not I've never been!

A couple of other drive in's we have are Kitt's and Kops. Kopps has fabulos burgers! There custard is to die for! My favorite flavor is butter pecan... YUM! So if you're ever in Milwaukee we'll take a venture to these classic American sites. :goodvibes

And a couple more really good places to get a burger here are Solly's, and Sobelman's (my personal favorite!)

Here's a video from the travel channel regarding Solly's

Are you hungry yet? :rotfl:

Looks like fun, but if it's not your thing, no sense wasting time with it. Maybe it helps to have enjoyed the MIB movies? :confused3

This is a simulator ride, like Star Tours, but the simulator is open on the top and you are looking out to a big screen.

If I remember, the Simpsons ride used to be the Back to the Future ride--same thing with a motion simulator open at the top. It was a lot of fun!

The nice thing about shops at Universal is that they all sell the merchandise appropriate for their area.

Very cute that the Simpsons shop was the Kwik-E-Mart.

I love the movie, but I still remember the ride as being "meh".

In the next update it is finally time for lunch!

All that before lunch? Nice work! :thumbsup2
