My DD13 has asked for a nook or kindle for Christmas :santa:. I was looking on amazon and noticed they will have the Kindle Touch with special offers and screensavers for $99 (preorder) or $139 w/o. My question is are these screensavers going to be a pain? Is it worth the $40 not to have the special offers and screensavers? Should I preorder or wait to see if there is any deals on black friday on nook or kindle. And is there much of difference between the two? This will be our first ereader purchase, so I know nothing about them.:confused3 Any suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

DH is getting me the Kindle Touch for Christmas as well & I told him to save the money and get me the one with the ads. When he was researching he said that if you want, you can pay the price difference at a later time to have the ads removed. So I figured I'd try it with the ads and if they were really THAT bad, I'd pay to remove them.

At least, that's what I understood him to say. ;)

I got the kindle for $114 with the ads back as a mother's day gift and have no problem with it. I would never pay the full price just to be add free. The only time I see an add is when I turn the kindle off. I thought there might be banners or something while I was reading, but that is not the case at all. I would save the money and buy the one with the ads.:thumbsup2

I just received a Kindle for my birthday as a gift from my husband. Since I gave him a VERY strict budget he purchased the one with the screensavers/ads. I don't find them to be an issue at all. They don't appear when you are reading at all. The screensavers are actually interesting, my kids like to see what pops up. ;)

I got the Nook Color for Christmas this past year and absolutely LOVE it!! My 5 and 10 year olds love it too. I don't think it can get as many apps as the Kindle, but it has Angry Birds, lol. The WiFi is very fast and my friends are always amazed at the speed when I'm showing them something online (we sit at dance lessons 4 days a week :). To me, it's like a cheap and scaled down IPad. The only downside is that it isn't 3G so you do have to be in a hotspot or near an unsecured account for WiFi, which I've never really found to be a problem. There are TONS of books since it is Barnes and Noble. All in all I love it, but I don't think you could go wrong with either the Nook or the Kindle.

You are going to have screen savers no matter what kindle you buy and IMO the ad screen savers are actually more pleasing to look at than the creepy ones that come with the non special offer Kindles. You will also end up with a small banner ad at the bottom of the home page.

No ads show up in the actual books, so they are really easy to ignore.

Besides, the special offers have been awesome; 50% off the lighted Kindle cover, $20 GC for $10, 6 audible books for $6, $10 credit when you buy a book with your visa card, many different $1 books, etc.

FYI, Barnes and Noble has the 1st edition Nooks on sale for $89 (I bought two yesterday for my nieces). While supplies last.

I love my Kindle. I ordered my dd11 a touch 3g with special offers for Christmas. As others have mentioned, you don't see the ads while reading a book so they don't interfere with the reading at all.

I think mine needs replaced and I'm going to buy one with ads as well if I do replace it.

Thanks for all the reponses. Can you get internet on the 3G touch? Or is it only for reading books on?

It use to be you could get on the Internet with the 3G Kindles but Amazon no longer wants to pay data charges for this so they have made the browsers only available while connected to wifi. You can still download books (obviously) and look up information on Wikipedia but 3G Internet browsing is only available on the K1, K2, and the K3 (kindle keyboard).

Personally I never browse the Internet on my kindle even though it is available, it just isn't very convenient IMO.

Thanks for asking about this, OP. I had the same questions about the ads. I have been doing surveys and swag bucks to get credit toward a Kindle for DD for Christmas.

That's how I bought my daughters as well! :goodvibes

i just got a kindle, and I actually like the ads, lol. For instance they gave me the option over Halloween to buy a $1 book, that is normally $10, and Im planning on taking them up on an offer for a kindle cover half off. Are those things really normally $50??? with a light

Im sure others have mentioned it, but they only come up when you turn it off anyway, not in the middle of reading or doing anything

We are getting our kids Kindle Touches for Xmas this year. They are 8 and 10. Does anyone know if the ads are appropriate for kids?
