Basically as of December 1st you will be required to have a detailed birth certificate indicating the name of the parent(s) issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial vital statistics agency if the child was born in Canada. This document will serve as both proof of parentage and proof of citizenship. So that means ANOTHER expense because the little birth certificates that we usually have for our kids don't have parents names on them. (I just checked 2 of my kids birth certs and no parents names).

So I'm making sure I get all three of my kids passports done in the next month or so before this comes into effect and I have to order something else!

***This is for people who don't already have passports for their kids. This will only effect people getting their kids their FIRST passport ever!***

Thanks for this! We already have all our kids' passports, but we're planning a 2013 WDW trip with (possibly) 70+ other people and I know many don't have passports yet!

I manage a portrait studio that does passports so I check the canada passport alot for new information.

Happy to help!

If you read down to the bottom it states that there is an exception...

if your child currently has a valid passport and it accompanies the application you do not require the long form birth certificate.

I just did one for my DS. I am going to have to watch and keep track of my DD to make sure I get hers renewed before it expires. I believe I have 3 more years left before I worry.

Oh yes I already saw that. I suppose I didn't specify that I meant this information was for people getting passports. It doesn't effect renewals because then you already had a passport.

I don't have passports for any of my kids yet! So if I didn't get their passports done before Dec 1 I would have another $50 expense to get NEW birth certificates for my 2 youngest children.

I thought we had to provide that when we applied last year... but we are in a "special" situation as a 2 mom family who has to carry the long form with us for ALL travel with or without a passport just to prove we are BOTH our daugther's parents. Ugh. Just writing that irks me.

Governments are just too silly for words. I can imagine how annoying that must be for you. :grouphug:

This was in a thread a few months ago.

Funny thing is some offices have been asking for the long form for quite a while now. I know my sister had to go and get a long form before they would let her apply for a passport for my nephew and that was last fall.

I have never had an issue as I always got both the short and the long for my kids.

Well "some" offices may have asked for it for a while now but it isn't a requirement until December 1st so your sister should have fought the office on that decision. They made her spend another $25 on a new bc that she didn't have to have. That's kinda frustrating. I've never heard of anyone being asked for the long form here in Manitoba.

I had to send a long form for my son over 5 years ago.
When I renewed in May someone from the passport office called and wanted one sent to them again before they would issue the passport.

Before the passport law came into effect OFFICIALLY there were also boarder crossing agents hasseling people for not having passports. But until it's official they can't force it. So unless there was some other reason they needed the long form this can't be the norm until December 1st when this new rule is put in place. Right? It's just another way for them to get more of your hard earned $ IMO.

Completely confused. Both DD's have passports since 2009. So are you saying I'll need something else? Is this just by air or land too? My kids are older and most times going through customs they ask my kids a question like "whats your moms name" or where are you going. I always figured that was to ensure they were with their parents.

If you children have valid passports then you don't need to worry. As posted, this is for new passports, not renewals.

For my 3 younger children I have to have a long form birth certificate to apply for their passports because their father and I weren't married at the time of their births. Still aren't and no plans to LOL. It's a pain so I haven't done it yet. Getting passports for my 2 older boys and dealing with divorce document part of those were trying enough. Guess I'd better get on the ball! UGH

Yeah that's kinda how I feel too. My oldest now knows his father but he isn't listed on his birth certificate. My 2 youngest children one has my last name - with his dads last name and the other only has her dads last name. We are divoced and i have sole custody. I also misplaced my oldests birth cert so I am getting his replaced before I can do their passports.

I had to do the same thing when I got my oldest son's passport this year. My ex and i weren't married when he was born and even though we all have the same last name, I had to get his long form birth certificate.

On a side note, I found it amusing that nobody asked any questions of myself or the kids when I took them from Canada into the US but we were checked coming back. The border guard talked to my oldest and asked him who looked after he and his brother and sister, whether his dad knew where they were and if he was okay with it. I thought it was funny that it wasn't until I was bringing them back into the country that they were questioned. I wasn't worried since I had a notarized travel authorization from my ex and our Separation Agreement stating that we had joint custody. I offered the authorization to the guard and he said they usually only check those when the kids are small and non-verbal. Once they are older as my kids are, they usually talk to the kids themselves and ask questions.
