Have a few question for the veterans and current owners.

If I get it, I will get just over 100 banked points...some from 2010, some from 2011...I currently have a trip booked at Pop for December...IF we close soon could I use those banked points for a trip in Dec and canx my current Rez at Pop? (assuming I could find some availability)

How long did it take you to close, get your docs, and be able to make a reservation?

How accomodating are the CMs with newbies and helping if I call and say "I have this many points, I want to stay these dates, what is available?" or do you have to know what you are doing and exactly what you want before making the call?

December can be very difficult at this point for a DVC reservation. But you never know, it doesn't hurt to try. You would have to book your DVC reservation with MS but MS will not handle cancelling your Pop reservation; you call Disney's Central Reservations to do that & be sure to check the cancellation deadline - I think it is more than 5 days before check in for room only reservation but on a package reservation I think cancelling needs to be done much earlier than that.


Your banked points must be valid for the travel dates you want; since you mention wanting to book for December 2011 I'm going to assume that your banked points in fact are all usable then BUT I don't know your Use Year so let's say for example :

if you have a February Use Year then only Banked 2010 points would be valid for Dec 2011 trip since banked Feb 2010 UY points would cover travel from Feb 1 2011 through Jan 31 2012.
~But Banked Feb 2011 UY points would not be usable for Dec 2011 trip because those points would be banked into 2012 UY making them usable only for trips between Feb 1 2012 through Jan 31 2013
and you would not be able to pull those points back into the 2011 UY because banking is a final transaction.

When we first purchased it took us around 6 weeks to close & that's kind of average although some here have had it happen faster and others it has taken weeks longer.

Majority of CMs at MS at extremely helpful and knowledgeable and will step by step explain and go through the process with you. It is always a good idea to have your choices/ # of points needed written down in order of your preference before placing your call so you can save time that way; if your first resort/dates aren't available then tell MS your next preference etc. Often if what you ask for isn't available MS will tell you an alternative resort if they see dates open there.

I don't know what the deadline is for cancelling your POP ressie, but call MS as soon as you get into the system to check what's available. You're unlikely to get your first pick (unless is SSR or OKW), and it's quite likely that you'll have to do a split stay, but if you can use your points and save on paying for the room at POP it's worth it - especially if your banked points are expiring soon.

Another option, if there is no availability for your dates, would be to rent out your banked points, and use that cash to either rent a reservation from another member, or just offset the cost of your cash POP ressie. As a matter of fact, renting a studio from a member now may even be cheaper than what you're going to pay at POP.

Check out the rent/trade board, points go from anywhere between $10-$13/pt. Figure out how many points you would need to get the ball park cost of renting points, then add the cost of getting the DDP (if needed) and park tickets, and compare that to the total cost of your package. May be a bit cheaper, about the same, or even a touch more, I can't say because I don't know the specifics of your trip. But even if it's a bit more, you may be happy to upgrade from POP to a DVC resort for the difference.

It will be very tight to make a dec points reserv... You are looking at 60 days before closing. So if it accepted today you are looking at closing the last week of October first week of November. If i remember correctly you only need to cancel a week before for pop. So i would make the reservation at one of the large resorts and wailist what you can't get. They will cancel your waitlist automatically after a certain period of time (7 days before the time you were asking for, i think) and you will just stay at pop. If it comes though then you can cancel pop. You have nothing to lose. SSR or OKW most always have something open... Good luck. Let us know how you make out. :thumbsup2
 
Faxed the closing paperwork today and the wire transfer is complete :banana: now what? They said it would take up to 2 months to get my paperwork from Disney, but from reading the boards I know I can make a reservation before that...but how? Do I just wait a few days, call MS and ask if I am in the system...I don't even know the number :scared1:

I am hoping to find something/anything in December so that I can cancel some or all of my Pop trip but I know with every day that goes by my chances get slimmer and slimmer (and they are already next to nothing!)

You are not in Disney's system until after your contract is closed. If you just faxed the closing documents back, you still have to wait for the seller to get theirs back, and for the agent to actually close your contract. If the seller's had unpaid dues or payments, it will take longer. After your broker tells you that your contract is closed, they will send everything to Disney. My broker told me to wait a week from the closing date to contact Disney.

Disney will not recognize you until they receive the final closing papers from your broker.
 
Once you actually close you may be in the system in about 2 weeks. Not from when you send the paperwork but from the date of closing. You would have to call to find out but there is no point in calling until after the closing has finished.
 
Made my first reservation today!!
Was able to book for December, got AKL for 5 nights, and SSR for 2...can cancel Pop! Also had enough points left over for a weekend trip during Flower and Garden...it was so cool hearing "Welcome Home" when I called MS.
