Please join me in celebrating my 50th Birthday...Deluxe Style! FINALLY COMPLETE

We had pretty much done everything we wanted to do at DHS, so decided to go back to our hotel for a nap before dinner. But there was just one more thing I wanted to do first…get a Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcake to eat sometime later. Sadly though, when we got to Starring Rolls Bakery (home of many of the wonderful cupcakes that I’ve seen here, including the Red Velvet one) it was closed. Of all the times I’ve been to DHS, I had never realized that Starring Rolls closed early. In looking at their information/menu listed here on the DIS, it says they close at 4:00 so I guess we were there after 4:00. So this is just a heads up to anyone heading to Starring Rolls for a cupcake fix…don’t put it off, get your cupcakes early. ;)

Anyway, we were really disappointed. Well actually I was disappointed, DD really didn’t care. But when I suggested that we drown our sorrows with cocktails at the Tune In Lounge, she was all for that idea! :woohoo:

IMG_0223.jpg

For those of you who are not already familiar with this little bar, it can be found sandwiched in between two sit-down restaurants, Hollywood & Vine and the 50’s Prime Time Café. I had noticed it during our many times dining at the Prime Time, as it shares this small space with the waiting area for the restaurant. However, I had never before gotten a drink there, so this was our first experience at the Tune In Lounge.

IMG_4728.jpg

Dad's Well-Stocked Liquor Cabinet

We were lucky and quickly scored two seats at the bar. After looking over and discussing the drinks listed on the cocktail menu, we placed our orders with the friendly bartender, David. He seemed to know several of the guests sitting around us and vice versa, so I would guess that he has worked there for many years. DD ordered a drink called Dad's Electric Lemonade ($10.50). Here is how this is described on the menu: Dad whips up an electrifying blue drink with Bacardi Rum, Skyy Vodka, blue curacao, sweet & sour and sprite. She gave Dad a :thumbsup2 for his tasty lemonade!

I chose a drink that I’d heard about here many times, but had yet to try…the Magical Star Cocktail ($10.50). Here is how it is described: Light up your celebration with X-Fusion Organic Mango and Passion Fruit Liqueur, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, pineapple juice, and a souvenir multicolored glow cube. Actually DD’s drink also had a glow cube, or as they are called here…Dad's "Experimental Electric Ice Cubes". So we ended up each getting our first ever glow cube souvenir.

Although I liked my cocktail and drank every last drop :drinking1 I probably wouldn’t get it again. There are just too many other drinks that I’d like to try here, like the Mowie Wowie or Grandma’s Picnic Punch. You gotta love the names of their specialty drinks! :lmao:

IMG_4726.jpg

Dad's Electric Lemonade and the Magical Star Cocktail

The Tune In Lounge seems to be a popular place, as it was quite busy the whole time we were there (during the late afternoon). Open spots at the bar are snatched up quickly, so there is no room for hesitation here. I also wanted to add that a couple sitting next to us ordered food from the Prime Time menu to eat while having their drinks. This included an order of onion rings that looked delicious, but sadly they didn’t offer us any. So anyway, if you enjoy the food at Prime Time but don’t feel like eating with your long-lost relatives, then the Tune In Lounge might be just the place for you. Oh, and don’t forget to try something from Dad’s Liquor Cabinet! :thumbsup2

Total OOP cost (including 18% TIW required gratuity) – $21.68

20% TIW Discount - $4.20

NEXT UP: Dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse

Hello everyone! We our home from our trip to New England. Had a great trip, with some really good food...especially the seafood in Maine and the Italian food that we had at a restaurant in the north end of Boston. :thumbsup2 But now it's time to get back to and finish up these dining reviews. After spending the last few days getting caught up with my work at the office, unpacking, and doing so many loads of laundry that I lost track of how many :laundy:, I've finally started on my next dining review. So coming soon will be my review of our dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse.

IMG_4528.jpg

Since we were staying at the Boardwalk Inn, it was just a short boat ride across the lake to the Yacht Club for our 7:20...

Dinner at YACHTSMAN STEAKHOUSE

IMG_4758.jpg

THE SHORT VERSION

Highlights – Complimentary Birthday Dessert, Rolls, Steaks, Iced Tea, and Excellent Service

Disappointments – Lobster Bisque, 2/3 of our Dessert Trio

Would We Return? – Definitely!

THE LONG VERSION

I had had an excellent meal here on our Nov. 2010 anniversary trip (second only to our dinner at California Grill) so was really looking forward to dining here again. While we waited to be seated, I took a few pictures of the room where they cut the steaks.

IMG_4733.jpg

And also a picture of their display case where you can see all the different cuts of steak that they serve here.

IMG_4757.jpg

And here is a picture of the dining room that I've borrowed because mine didn't turn out very well:

Yachtsman.jpg

We were seated at a table by a window which overlooked Stormalong Bay, the Yacht & Beach Club pool (which is actually more like a small waterpark).

IMG_4739.jpg

Soon after we were seated our server, Kathy, took our drink orders. DD ordered a glass of the wine (can be seen in above picture) that was paired with the entrée she had chosen. This was a red wine from South Australia, Penfold’s Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz for $13.00. She enjoyed it and thought it went well with her steak. I decided to skip the wine this time and instead ordered iced tea. This was served with a small pitcher of sweet syrup that could be added to make it sweet tea. This was delicious and so refreshing that I ended up drinking at least three glasses of it, maybe even four. Our server was very good about making sure that my glass never sat empty.

IMG_4736.jpg

Iced Tea

Next came one of the YSH favorites…the onion pull-apart rolls. Also included in the bread basket were sourdough rolls.

IMG_4734.jpg

Basket of Rolls (featuring the Onion Pull-Aparts) along with butter and roasted garlic

These are so delicious that they warrant a second, close-up shot.

IMG_4735.jpg

Close up shot of the Onion Pull-Apart Rolls

For her appetizer, DD ordered the Lobster Bisque. She didn’t like this, thought it had a weird taste. Unfortunately, that is all she can remember about this soup now.

IMG_4740.jpg

Lobster Bisque

I however enjoyed my appetizer, which was the Assortment of Artisanal Cheeses served with toasted slices of sourdough baguette. Here is a picture of the menu which accompanied my cheese plate.

IMG_4742.jpg

These cheeses are shown in the picture below starting from the top left with the Lamb Chopper (the mildest) and following in the menu order (and getting stronger in taste) to the Australian blue cheese shown in the right bottom. While DD liked the two milder cheeses best, my favorite was the blue cheese. I also really liked the roasted pine nut brittle it was paired with.

IMG_4741.jpg

Assortment of Artisanal Cheeses

As for our entrees we both had steak of course. ;) DD chose the Prime New York Strip Steak with a peppercorn brandy sauce served with Carmody (cheese) potato gratin. She said the steak was very good but she didn’t think too highly of the potato gratin and wished that she had substituted it with the mashed potatoes.

IMG_4746.jpg

Prime New York Strip Steak with Carmody Potato Gratin

For my steak, I chose my favorite cut of steak, the filet mignon. This was an 8 oz. filet with a red wine sauce, cooked to a perfect medium-well as ordered and without being butterflied (which they often do when you order a filet med-well). Just like my previous (which was also my first) visit to YSH, my filet was again tender and delicious and again was the best steak of the trip. Oh, and I also enjoyed the mashed potatoes which accompanied my filet.

IMG_4748.jpg

Filet Mignon with Mashed Potatoes

DD said she was too full to order her own dessert so we decided to order just one dessert to share. I originally planned to order the crème brulee for dessert since I had enjoyed it here on my last visit. However, DD isn’t as big a fan of crème brulee as I am, so I had to switch to Plan B. Plan B was the Trio of Valrhona Chocolate, which consists of small portions of three different chocolate desserts. Our favorite of the three was the peanut one which is the one in the top right of the picture below. It was a quite tasty combination of chocolate and peanut butter. Sadly, neither of us thought the other two desserts (Espresso and Salted Caramel) were worth the many calories they probably contained, so after tasting them they were left mostly uneaten. Ordering this dessert was my one and only regret from this meal. I should have taken the advice of many here, and ordered the Yachtsman Sundae. Next time, and there will definitely be a next time, I will know better.

IMG_4754.jpg

Trio of Valrhona Chocolate

Our server also brought out a complimentary birthday dessert (small cupcake), complete with a lit candle.

IMG_4750.jpg

Complimentary Birthday Dessert

Other than the Hollywood Brown Derby, this was the only other Signature restaurant which provided us with excellent service on this trip. Although I would have to give the HBD the edge if I had to choose the best, the service given to us by Kathy at the YSH would be a very close second.

So in conclusion, for me this dinner had only one minor flaw (the dessert), therefore the YSH meal was to this point my favorite of the trip. But would it remain on top with the stiff competition which still lays ahead…California Grill, Jiko, and Citricos? :confused3 Stay tuned to find out. :thumbsup2

Now for the numbers...

Total cost of meal (not including tip and wine) - $126.41 (or $31.60 per Dining Plan credit)

And so I can do a DDP vs. TIW Cost Comparison at the end...

Total cost of meal (again not including tip and wine) if we had used my Tables in Wonderland discount of 20% instead of the DDP - $101.12

20% TIW Discount on Wine - $2.60

NEXT UP: Breakfast at Kringla Og Bakery

Thanks for your wonderful YSH review

Can't wait to hear what you think about Jiko, Cali Grill & Citricos :goodvibes

I am a fan of Dad's Electric Lemonade :goodvibes

Loving your review - keep it coming please!

My DD agrees with you about the Lemonade! :thumbsup2

Thanks for reading! :) I'll try to get our last 3 days of reviews done soon.

Thanks for your wonderful YSH review

Can't wait to hear what you think about Jiko, Cali Grill & Citricos :goodvibes

Thanks Linda! :wave2:

Just spent an entire afternoon reading your report. Love it. Looking forward to more.

Thanks for taking the time to read my reviews Pinkgirl!

Today was moving day so after packing up our stuff we dropped if off at the bell stand at the Boardwalk Inn for transfer to the Polynesian. Then we were off to Epcot, reaching the Kringla Og Bakery in Norway just as they were opening their door at 11:00.

IMG_4792.jpg

I had originally planned on getting a sweet pretzel, or a crème horn, or some other baked goodie that I’ve heard about but have yet to try. Shockingly though, I found myself craving fruit that morning, so ended up getting a mixed fruit cup. I know, I know…crazy, right??? :lmao: DD, however, had no such weird fruit craving so she got a very tasty apple danish. We also got a coffee drink called a Viking Coffee, which is a blend of Columbian coffee, Kamora Coffee Liqueur and Bailey's Irish Cream (topped with whipped cream) for $8.25. The alcohol flavor in this was too strong for me at 11:00 in the morning, but DD thought it was fine.

IMG_4791.jpg

Apple Danish, Mixed Fruit Cup, and Viking Coffee

OOP cost - $8.79 (including tax)

2 snack credits used (Value approx. $6.25), 5 more to go

Also, after eating (and drinking) our breakfast, we rode Maelstrom for more game points.

Points Earned - 10

NEXT UP: Lunch at Teppan Edo

So glad you enjoyed Yachtsman! It was one of the highlights of our most recent trip, and the desserts were all especially amazing. I also thought the lobster bisque was one of the bigger disappointments of the meal, but everything else made up for it. :goodvibes

I'm looking forward to seeing your other signature reviews, especially after having great meals at Citricos and Jiko this month.

Soon it was time to head over to the Japanese pavilion for our 12:10 reservation for…

Lunch at TEPPAN EDO

IMG_4806.jpg

THE SHORT VERSION

Highlights – Tokyo Sunset, Iced Green Tea, Most of the Food

Disappointments – Assorted Tempura Appetizer, Desserts

Would We Return? – Definitely

THE LONG VERSION

After checking in at the shared desk (with Tokyo Dining) on the 2nd floor of the Mitsukoshi building (above the department store), we were immediately seated in the very first room (of 6, I think). In case you have never been to this restaurant, this is what each of the 4 tables (per room) looks like.

IMG_4808.jpg

Each table seats 8, so we were joined at our table by 3 married couples. We were brought warm towels to clean our hands and our drink orders were taken. DD ordered the Iced Green Tea, which she had enjoyed very much the last time she was here. I too had had the Iced Green Tea last time but didn’t care for it, so I had planned to get the regular iced tea instead. But I changed my mind at the last minute when I saw this drink listed in the cocktail menu… Tokyo Sunset - Coconut rum, creme de banana, peach schnapps and pineapple juice ($9.00). This was sweet and fruity and I really enjoyed it!

IMG_4809.jpg

Tokyo Sunset and Iced Green Tea

For my appetizer, I chose the Assorted Tempura, which consisted of one piece each of shrimp, chicken breast, and seasonal vegetables served with Japanese Tempura dipping sauce. My seasonal vegetables were sweet potato and zucchini.

IMG_4812.jpg

Assorted Tempura with dipping sauce

Although the tempura was fine, DD and I agreed that she made the better choice. For her appetizer, DD ordered the Wafu Ribs, which were sake, soy and ginger braised pork ribs. She gave me one of her three ribs in exchange for my piece of shrimp tempura. We both thought the ribs were quite tasty and better than the tempura. :thumbsup2

IMG_4817.jpg

Wafu Ribs

For our entrees, we decided to order the same way we had on our last visit to Teppan Edo. She ordered the Shrimp and I ordered the Filet Mignon and then we shared, creating our own Surf & Turf combo. We do this because we both love shrimp and steak, but prefer filet over the sirloin that is served in the steak and shrimp combo served here.

Here is a picture of our chef preparing the Udon noodles, mushrooms, zucchini, and onion that were served with our entrees. As you can see, she made an onion volcano by layering rings of onion one on top another. Then oil and water are poured into the center to create the smoke.

IMG_4819.jpg

Another picture of our chef in action, this time she has started to grill our shrimp and steak.

IMG_0228.jpg

Now for the pictures of the finished product…

IMG_4820.jpg

Shrimp Entree

IMG_4823.jpg

Filet Mignon Entree

And then a picture of my plate after combining our entrees (Filet Mignon and Shrimp) along with the bowl of steamed white rice and three dipping sauces that accompany all of the entrees here. The three sauces were a white (for seafood), mustard (for steak/chicken), and ginger (for veggies/everything).

IMG_4825.jpg

Combined Entrees with Rice and Dipping Sauces

I loved this and couldn’t stop eating until my plate was clean. :lovestruc Although the filet was not quite as good as the YSH filet, it was well-seasoned and cooked and very good.

Although we were very full, DD couldn’t pass up having her favorite dessert from her last trip…Green Tea Pudding. Although she again liked it, she said that it didn’t taste as good as she had remembered. However, this may have been due to her being so full this time, as last time we ate here we weren’t on the Deluxe Dining Plan so didn’t have appetizers.

IMG_4826.jpg

Green Tea Pudding

I wasn’t going to have dessert, but DD didn’t want to be the only one still eating at our table. Since I didn’t like the Green Tea Pudding (I had tasted hers last time), I didn’t want to share her dessert. So instead I ordered the dessert I had gotten last time…Chocolate Ginger Cake. Again this was okay, but not worth stuffing myself to the point of being miserable, so I only ate a few bites.

IMG_4827.jpg

Chocolate Ginger Cake

In conclusion, although my appetizer and dessert were nothing special here, the main entrée was delicious. Our chef wasn’t quite as entertaining as some I’ve seen, but she did a good job in preparing our food. And, as is always the case here, our server was very attentive and polite.

Now for the numbers...

Total cost of meal (not including tip and cocktail) - $96.17 (or $48.09 per Dining Plan credit)

And so I can do a DDP vs. TIW Cost Comparison at the end...

NOTE: Although Tables in Wonderland is not honored here, I could have gotten the 10% Annual Passholder Discount which is offered during lunch on Monday – Friday only. The cost of our meal (not including tip and cocktail) would have then been $86.55.

YUM! This is my favorite Disney dessert!

Joining in!

I just love the way you do the reviews. I am going in a month on a girls trip during free dining - and I love the comparison of the TiW with the ddp. I have a TiW, too - and I can't wait to see your end analysis.

It's such a mistake to read these reviews when you are hungry! :lmao:

Wow, I've read lots of dining reviews before and I have to say, yours are simply the best!!! I love your pictures and descriptions. Great job! Thank you for taking the time to do this so the rest of us can drool!!!

Thank you to you both for the compliments :goodvibes and thank you for taking the time to read my reviews. I'm sorry that I've been so slow with the updates. I'll try to get a few more done this weekend, plus maybe even my final analysis on the DDP vs. TIW. Thanks again! :)

After our lunch at Teppan Edo, we did a little shopping at the Mitsukoshi department store downstairs and then decided we were ready to continue our…

DRINKING (AND EATING) AROUND THE WORLD–PART III

Before leaving the store we came upon the sake bar and decided this would be a good place to start. The girl working at the bar was so friendly and we had a great conversation with her.

IMG_4834-1.jpg

Japan’s Sake Bar (located inside the Mitsukoshi Department Store)

Here is a picture of the Bar Menu:

IMG_4832.jpg

Since the last (and only) time I’d tasted sake I thought it tasted like something that should be used to fuel a jet, I insisted that we go with the mildest form of sake on the menu, Hana Awaka (Sparkling Sake). This is described on the menu as being a refreshing sake that brings your taste buds alive with a cheerful balance of bursting sweetness. In other words, a good drink for wimps like me. :lmao:

Then it was time to head to the UK to catch a performance by the new rock band, British Revolution, which replaced the British Invasion. Our reviews of this band are split…I liked them a lot, maybe even more than the British Invasion (at least the one we’ve heard in recent years). However, DD said they were just okay and is sad that the British Invasion is gone. So what does everyone else think of the new band?

IMG_4842.jpg

Points earned - 10 (5 for each of us)

Anyway, on our way over to the UK from Japan we walked right by this lovely little stand in France. :thumbsup2

France's Adult Slushie Stand

It dawned on me that I hadn’t yet had one of my favorite Disney World drinks…the Grand Marnier Orange Slush ($10.01 with tax). :scared1: So I of course made a quick stop to remedy this situation. I must have had a very happy look on my face while I drank this :cloud9: because I had three people ask me what I was drinking and where I had gotten it. :rotfl:

So because we had 5 snack credits yet to use by midnight and since we were in the UK to watch the band, we decided to get a side of chips from the Fish & Chips stand there. They were very yummy!

We ended up bringing these last three snacks home with us and eating them 3 days later and believe it or not they were all still very tasty…especially the caramel roll, which was delicious.

Great reviews!!! Can't wait to read more. You gave me great ideas for my trip with my Mom. We want to eat & drink around the world and had no idea about the wine or beer passports!

What did you think about the sparkling sake?? I'm also a wimp when it comes to drinks like that and I love anything sparkling :)

Excellent reviews! I hope to try my hand at eating and drinking around the world next month as well when I'm there with my sister! I had never heard of the Tune In Lounge before and now I'm definitely going to sneak in there when I need a refreshing drink. Great photos and great descriptions. Looking forward to more!

Thanks JessiLynn! :) Hope you too have a great mother/daughter trip. As for the sparkling sake, it was very drinkable for me. It didn't taste at all like jet fuel, more like a wine cooler...which is much more my style. :lmao:

Your reviews are amazing...and so helpful! I'm making many mental notes for our upcomping trip :thumbsup2

Glad to be of help and thanks for reading! :wave2:
