Junior Ranger's in Alsaka

I was reading in a post about the Junior Ranger program on the Alaska cruise but had a few questions...

Did the rangers come on the ship and tell you about the program?

Did you have to preregister for this?

Is there a link to look at it before we arrive?

It sounds like something my DS 10 would love to do.

We were on the Alaska cruise June 14th.

Yes, the ranger is on the boat. We found out about this program the first day when we took our DD9 to the Lab. One of the counselors told us about the program and my daughter was really interested in going. We were told to just check out the daily navigators for the times.
The kids are given a booklet that they are to fill out by the end of the cruise. There are several different Jr. Ranger sessions. My daughter really enjoyed going to the sessions.

Thank you for the information. We are on the 8/16 sailing and DS (9) earned his Jr. Ranger patch in Yellowstone last summer...this is great that he can earn one here too!

No need to preregister. They list the times that the Ranger is in the Lab in the Navigator. I went to talk to the Ranger and got a copy of the booklet. We did most of it out of the Lab, because the other programming was too distracting.

The requirements are

5 pages plus attend one Ranger session for a pencil.
10 pages plus attend two Ranger sessions for a badge.
the whole book (you can mail it in to the Ranger) to get a sew on patch.

I talked to the Ranger who ran the program (She was training a new Ranger) and she said the program is not online yet. She is going to work on that on the off season, but she is a staff of one off season, so it might not happen.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I was looking through the Navigators to see when the Junior Ranger sesssions were, and I wondered if DS would get distracted by the other activities going on. How long is the booklet?

Some are quick - like a map where you have to find about 5 things on a map or color in a totem pole.

Some are to be done when in the cities - like what plants (draw a picture of the leaf, is it tall or short) or what animals you see (checkboxes).

Some really need help of a ranger (what plants can be used for what medical needs).

And some just take time (a huge word search).

We brought the booklet with us for breakfast and dinner. Gave him something to do while waiting for food.

Bringing it to meals is a very good idea. This sounds like a lot of fun!

Also, if you go on any whale watching tours or anything like that... you can use your guide as a reference and even have him/her sign off on your book. This helps if your child is not at the actually ranger sessions.

The Tongass Junior Ranger program is for kids from 3 to 93.
