I get lots of great advice here. I have an Iphone, an Ipad, and i then got a macbook pro. I bought a keurig. The new challenge.....I need a new bed. I had no idea bed shopping was so difficult. I have looked at reviews but everyone either hates or loves their.....(fill in the blank).

So looking for advice...am thinking about a tempurpedic Rhapsody bed. It is expensive but hoping it would last a long time. Anyone have this bed? How long have you had it?

Have to go to another shop next weekend to check out Sterns and Foster but am afraid price will match Tempurpedic. What is better?

Any tips appreciated. BTW also considering a Simmons Beauty Rest with a latex foam top but coils in the cors (much cheaper)

Thanks

Beds are such an item of personal preference. I sleep much better on our bed than at many hotels and our mattress was not that expensive.
Some of our good friends paid $5000 for their mattress set and they hate it, but they also feel that they must get their money out of it and still sleep on it.

My advice is to lie before you buy. That is what we did. We paid $700 for our set and love it. If we end up hating it down the road, we have no problem with buying a new set.

Buying a bed is too personal to generalize. And to make it harder, the manufacturers make it near impossible to comparison shop. They will sell the same bed to one department store and call it the "Winchester". They will sell basically the same bed with a different stitching and pattern to another store and call it the "Charleston".

Here is what I'd recommend...
  1. Be prepared to lay on the showroom beds for a good 5 minutes. Don't be embarassed. How else are you going to know if you like the way the bed feels.
  2. For a quality bed, be prepared to spend some money. An inexpensive bed will lose it's support in 5-6 years. A better quality bed hold for 10-12 years on average.
  3. Stay with a proven brand. Sealy, Serta, and you mentioned Sterns and Foster (which is a premium brand). So if you're in that price range, you'll be fine.
  4. My personal experience...go firm.

A bed is as personal as ordering breakfast. Have you ever heard people order their breakfast at a coffee shop? My goodness, I feel so bad for those waitresses! :sad2:

Yep, very personal decision. The mattress I have is middle of the road, not all that expensive, but I have a 3" memory foam topper on it and I love it. So comfortable for me, my mom hates it and has no idea how can sleep on it. On the other hand, I think her much more expensive Sealy pillow topper is not at all comfortable and definitely not worth the money.

We have the westin heavenly bed in all the bedrooms of our homes..we love the heavenly bed...nordstroms has their big yearly sale end of july/beginning of august its the perfect time to purchase a heavenly mattress

Same for Dh and me, except we have cheap mattress with a 3' memory foam. We both love it!

I have a really, really bad lower back, so I was told not to get a Tempurpedic bed. I bought a Sterns and Foster bed, and find it *very* supportive. I did have to buy a 3/4 inch memory foam topper because the surface was a bit hard on my shoulder when I slept on my side.

But I agree with the others. It's so personal to you & how you sleep. I went to a place that had a large selection of brands, and spent 5 - 10 minutes on each one. Some of them multiple times. I took a *LOT* of time, but I wanted to be sure I really could live with it.

Also, if you really like your pillow, take it with you.

Sayhello

I usually stay at the Swan when I go to WDW, and I LOVE the Westin Heavenly Bed!

I can only stress that the more $$$ you spend does not mean it is a better mattress. Without going into the longest story you could ever here about a problem with a mattress, we ended up with a $3000 (cashmere pillow top:rotfl:) mattress and absolutely hated it. Lucky for us (due to the company screw up with the first mattress) it did not cost us a penny. We had the mattress for a year and chucked it and bought another one that we love and it was not even $1000 for the mattress and box spring. Take your time and also remember the price is negotiable at those mattress stores so you can haggle.

Just wait a few months. I'm sure they'll release an iBed. :)

My parents recently bought a new bed. My Mom said she bought the brand she did because it had a 30 year warrantee, when most others had only 25. My parents are 70 and 68. If they last 30 years (which I hope they do of course), their mattress will be the least of their worries.

I also love mattress salesmen. They seem to be the guys that failed at used cars. One guy told me his matress was made with "space age technology". I replied "whats so great about technology from the 60s?"

I spent a lot of time doing my best Goldilocks impression and trying out the mattresses in the store. I spent enough time on them on my back and sides that I was able to compare them fairly quickly.

I narrowed down my choice that came with a built-in topper, not too much, but enough to notice. Firmer side mattress because it will get softer over the years. I didn't got for the extremely expensive ones, but I think I paid $1200 or so for the mattress and box spring when all was said and done. And that was about 6 years ago.

I still love my bed. :goodvibes

You don't have to buy a matching set...no one but you will see it (and only when you're changing the sheets)! We have a national chain in Canada that does a great mismatched sets sale. I agree with others that you need to lie on the bed in the store for a time to get a better idea if the matress works for you. Not sure if stores allow you to bring your own pillow in with you, but that would take another variable out of the mix...good luck!

I LOVE my Select Comfort! I've had it for quite a while now and I miss it terribly when I go away. Being able to adjust the mattress is a lot more useful than I ever thought it would be. Sometimes a firmer setting is better for me, sometimes I need it a little softer.

I can tell you which bed I DO NOT like. It's the Sleep Number bed. I've stayed at Radisson Hotels that offer them, and it's quite annoying hearing the motors start up in the middle of the night to inflate the mattresses. UGH.

We bought a new bed last summer. We love, love, love our Tempurpedic! :lovestruc Cannot say enough good things about it! We got the second one up from the bottom model and paid $2000 for a California King size. We got the sales lady to toss in free pillows, a free bedframe, and free set of king size 600 thread count sheets.

If you are looking at Tempurpedic, you may find that you don't really need the top of the line model. The important part is the material they are made from and they all have that.

I wake up in the morning and the bed is formed to my body and I'm still comfortable. We had a memory foam mattress pad before we got this bed which is what led me to look at these. We laid on it a lot at the store. Even so, when you first get it, it takes some getting used to. I wasn't completely sure the first few nights but after a week I loved it.

I've had a Beautyrest for 6 or 7 years and I love it. After I bought mine, my sister liked it so much she went out and bought the same thing. I'd buy it again and so would she.

Thanks for all the tips. I guess I just have to do more shopping this weekend. It would not have been so bad had I not just gotten back from a work trip to Anaheim (yay I went early and went to DL on sunday) and slept great. I came home. Hubby was like isn't it nice to be in your own bed and I agreed until Sat morning (ouch). My back has been bothering me for a while I just assumed it was all that running.

Just seems like such an important decision. I dont want to take it lightly!

Thanks

I too have a Simmons Beautyrest. This is my second and I'm very pleased with it. In between these two my in-laws convinced us to buy a Verlo mattress. I HATED it and was miserable on it for over 5 years! Went back to Simmons and I'm very happy! My is the 85th Anniversary edition (just a step above the same bed that is the Westin Heavenly bed-which I liked as well).
Here are my two tips: chiro instructed me not to get a pillowtop, he said that's where most back problems come from. He also said get as firm as you can stand which for me is Plush. We initially ordered a Plush Firm but sent it back within the 30 days "try it" period, it was just a bit too firm for me being a side sleeper.
Next, shop around at various stores. Although they call call them by a different model name once you get to know the line you'll know which one you're lying on. I found the best deal at Carson's ( Bergner's, Bon-Ton & Boston Store). It was an excellent price and then when I opened a credit card I got 10% off of that already good deal.

Good luck really take your time. I went to at least 5 different stores and visited several twice. I went to Carson's 3 times before I finally bought.
