Safe in dorm?

My dd will be a freshman this fall she is thinking about getting a small safe for her cash, jewelry and medication in her dorm room...is this weird or do people bring a small safe any input would be greatly appreciated

For the disney college program, there are lockers in the rooms which you could lock(with own person lock).

You've obviously had no experience with taking medication or potential drug addicts. People will break in to places for something as light as prescription allergy meds, let alone if the daughter has something stronger for whatever reason that doesn't need to be shared with us.

OP, I think a small lock, like one you would use at school will be sufficient since there are lockers in each room, for each person.

I think that's a good idea. I didn't take one with me to the dorms at college, but my "roommate"/friend across the hall had a lock box (like the kind for important forms from an office supply store). She kept her financial aid info in it, other important stuff, & her medicine. (adhd meds, I only know this cuz she we were talking about it one night.)

I've never understood lockboxes.... What keeps people from just picking up the whole thing and carrying it off?

haha even a "drug addict" isn't going to risk breaking and entering charges for Diphenhydramine or DXM when they can just walk into walgreens and buy it over the counter.... you silly

Weirder things have happened... I have two friends who have had their meds stolen from dorms (one lost her Adderall and Lexapro, the other got all her Advil and Nyquil stolen). You never know!

They are the size of an average school locker.

If we're talking a standard dorm, then no, don't bring a safe. At school I left my door unlocked most of the time (unless I left the dorm altogether) and nothing was ever stolen, and my laptop was one of the first things a person saw when they walked in. Just placing things out of sight will deter anyone from theft. My dorm was filled with well-meaning and good girls and most of us became good friends, but that might be different for her depending on the school. Also, i don't know how it is at other schools, but we had a swipe card system for the door, so anyone without a card couldn't get in the building.

For a regular dorm, it depends on the school. I didn't have a lock box or safe or anything, but our rooms came supplied with this drawer/tower type thing that had a place you could put a lock on it. I kept my laptop in there and ipod when I was at class.

I think she will probably be one of the only people to bring a safe. However, I think it's a good idea. My school had a big problem with theft. There was more than one major robbery and I heard stories about roommates or roomies friends stealing stuff. Even though I never got anything stolen it might have been a good idea to have a safe or some sort of drawer with a lock for my laptop and stuff. It does depend on the school (my school was in an urban area, so not as secure) but better safe than sorry right?

My roomies and I used our lockers for about a week before we just left everything sitting on our beds, we left our laptops out, our ipods, and even money, just laying around. Although I didn't hang out with them that much I love that in that sense I had the best room mates ever. No one was a thief and I love them for that.

If your talking about general college (not the cp) then I would say go ahead and bring a little lock box thing (a mini safe is not necessary). I had a steamer trunk I put a combo lock on and that I used to hold old notebooks, trinkets, my external harddrive, dvd burner, and random other stuff. I ended up using it for storage of all of my old notebooks and books that I thought I might need in the rest of my college career. When I lived in dorms I just stuck it under my bed and even at one point made a cushion for it and made it a bench. I would actually recommend something like that over just a safe. Less obvious and more variety of uses.
