We got our first DSLR about a yr ago and have not quite mastered it but are looking at getting another lens. We have a Canon Rebel XSI any suggestions or tips?

That is a very open-ended question!!:rotfl2: What are you looking to do with this new lens? What do you currently have? Budget? Are you looking for faster ($$)? You will have to supply some more information so someone can provide you some guidance to the hundreds of lenses available.

Sorry, can you tell how much of a newbie I am?;)

We usually just take pictures of the kids and scenery on vacations. We currently just have the one that came with the camera which is a 18-55mm. I do not want to spend a fortune as we are definately not professionals.

No worries, that's how everyone on this forum started and you don't learn without asking questions. Just a little more information, what is it that your current lens isn't doing that you want to do? Are you adverse to changing lenses for different situations?

The next lens a lot of people get is the 55-250. It will let you have more zoom. Another popular lens to get when you're just starting out is the 50mm f/1.8. It will let you take shots in lower light with no flash. But like already said, a lot of what you get depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Zoom would be something I would want more of.

As Danielle (photo_chick) stated the 55-250 will work and not break the bank. Maybe one of the Canon shooters can give you the specific lens that works with your camera (I shoot Pentax). At some point, I would look at Canon's 50mm f1.8. Its a relatively cheap lens (about $125) and will allow you to shoot in lowlight without a flash.

Thanks soo much!

Another alternative, although a little more expensive, would be an all-in-one lens, like the Tamrom 18-270. These are nice so you don't have to keep swapping lenses back and forth.

the Canon 55-250IS is a sharp but inexpensive telephoto zoom - only $199

I have the Tamron 18-270 and love it. It's my go to lens and is on my camera (Canon EOS 7D) most of the time. Just used it in the Galapagos Islands and Disney. However, the switch for auto and manual focus no longer works (at least it's stuck on manual). Not sure if that's from heavy use, or getting knocked up while traveling.

I also have the 50 1.8 lens and I rarely use it. I did use it on a few of the darker rides at Disney last week.
