Government shut down will affect you

All the guidance I've seen says military is not being furloughed.

I think some people would be surprised at who is and isn't being furloughed on the civilian side.

No military won't be furloughed which means they will keep working and eventually will get back paid, but as I posted before it the shut down happens military pay will be interrupted.

Right, my husband and every other military member will be expected to work but we won't get paid until they pass a new budget. So, after the 15th, our paychecks will not be deposited until the shutdown is over. Imagine that, troops overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq will not get their pay. It's disgusting.

I sent in our tax return last week. So I guess that will be delayed. Luckily we were just going to put this in savings instead of using it for some already-planned expense.

I know I can't believe it. They are so selfish that they only care about their party and not the people instead of working together to make our country better they separate.

My DS is going on a safety patrol trip to DC/Smithsonian/etc. at the end of April. He won an essay contest and he is to lay a wreath at Arlington Cemetery. He will be very disappointed if this trip does not take place.

DH works for the Department of Homeland Security. He has to work but also will be paid when the Government opens back up but heres where we will lose money. He will only be paid base pay and won't be getting his AUO and FLSA. Thats a lose of a 1000.00 per pay check. I thank god we have an emergency fund but I really hate that I have to use it because of the butt heads in DC!!!

We are military. Hubby is at school and out of the loop. I am expecting no pay on the 15. We have an emergancy fund so if it happens, it happens. We are good.

My thought, no pay military than no pay Congress or President. No work because of the shut down than no pay check. I also think the shut down should happen. I have to live on a budget, the government needs to live on a budget it also. It cannot do everything that it is doing.

From OPMs website

http://www.opm.gov/furlough2011/

If the current continuing resolution expires at 12:01 a.m. on April 9, 2011 without passage of an FY 2011 appropriations bill or a further continuing resolution, Federal departments and agencies will be required to execute contingency plans for a lapse in appropriations (more commonly referred to as a "shutdown"). These contingency plans detail which agency activities are allowed by law to continue to operate, and which activities must stop. Employees whose salaries are funded through annual appropriations will not be able to work and will be furloughed, unless their duties qualify under the law as "excepted" to continue to work during periods of lapsed appropriations. During a shutdown, non-excepted employees are not permitted to work as unpaid volunteers for the government. Any paid leave (annual, sick, court, etc.) approved for use during the furlough period must be cancelled. An excepted employee who is absent from duty during the shutdown must be furloughed during such an absence.

Federal agencies do not have the authority to pay their employees during a shutdown, regardless of whether the employees are working as "excepted" or furloughed as "non-excepted". "Excepted" employees will receive pay for hours worked when the Congress passes and the President signs a new appropriation or continuing resolution. Congress will also determine whether "non-excepted" employees will receive pay for the furlough period.

Q: Will excepted employees be paid for performing work during a shutdown furlough? If so, when will excepted employees receive such payments?
A: Agencies will incur obligations to pay for services performed by excepted employees during a lapse in appropriations, and those employees will be paid when Congress passes and the President signs a new appropriation or continuing resolution.

DH is civilian DOD and still doesn't know if he or anyone who works for him is an 'excepted employee'. Even if he is allowed to work, he won't be paid until something is signed. We'll be ok, since we have enough money in our emergency savings, but I am very concerned about those who live paycheck to paycheck, especially our service people.

I read something that said it won't affect the military at all.

It will effect small things, like getting passport,
museums
The mail will still run
I'm sure you will still get your refuns
people will still get SSI

Hey I'm watching abcnews tonight with Diane Sawyer. they just said military will not get their paychecks.

I have a friend whose DH works for FAA. He inspects runways. From what he says, it is possible that soon runways will not be inspected (at all...as often...who knows). This will affect all of us that fly to WDW & other places.

This'll effect our trip to DC as well. My dd won the White House Easter Egg Roll on the 25th. We didn't really have the $$ budgeted but felt like this was a 'once in a lifetime' deal since 1) It was a lottery draw and 2) she'll be 12 in the fall. How disappointing and expensive it's going to be if it's all closed!
And no, we didn't buy insurance for our flights or hotel..:scared1:

I am really concerned about the people currently deployed who are going to be worried about their families paying bills and eating instead of the bullet coming at them or the IED on the road.

We will manage somehow. We will still go to Disney, because it is entirely paid for, and we would lose money to cancel, and I can at least guarantee that we will eat that week since we have the dining plan, but there will be no souvenirs, and nothing to drink or eat that isn't on the dining plan. Happy birthday girls. :sad1:

I'm a federal employee, so I won't be getting paid for however long it takes Congress to get their act together.

IRS is saying processing of refunds for paper returns will likely be delayed. E-file processing will probably not be affected (so they say).

No matter how you file they are saying that if a person has to physically look at your return for any reason such as an audit or if you file injured or innoucent spouce forms etc. than your return would be delayed.

A newly retired Federal employee here. So after my 30.5 years in the Federal Government, this just isn't a big deal to me. I've rode the shut down train several times in my USG career in DC. It always works out in due time. The last time they shut down I was in WDW -- go figure -- and when I got home I didn't have to use any vacation time because of the shut down, so ended up with extra vacation days to use and still got paid my full salary. I'm sure this will be resolved before my next retirement payment is due on May 1. It really does affect those tourist that come into DC to visit the Smithsonians as they all shut down! And this is Cherry Blossum time in DC, so there are alot of tourist. I just mailed my taxes this week, so it will come when it comes. Strange that our tax returns are still due on time, even though the USG might be closed to receive them.

Now that is getting close and IRS refund might be delayed I was wondering how it will affect all of you? For us since the pentagon aren't sure how they will pay the military will be a huge budget buster. I am grateful for our emergency savings.

They are saying that the military will get paid because when the govt. shut down back in the 90's there were no issues with them getting paid. Same with social security checks.

I agree, its awful to think about. Hopefully if the shutdown does happen, congress will at least pass something so the military will still get paid without delay.

The military won't get paid unless Congress passes a law to ensure they get paid.

Not according to the Pentagon. My husband got official notice through the Army today to only expect to be paid through the 8th. I don't know where you got your information, but it isn't correct.

My mother was talking about all the work to shut down operations and that she is going to have to lay off local workers if the govt closes (she's overseas)...I don't envy her those tasks. She'll still be working (unpaid) but she's not sure what else will be going on if the govt shuts down. Hopefully they'll figure something out quickly.

I remember the shut down in the 90's. Very weird to be in DC then.

I work for the federal gov't too. We were informed today that we'd find out if we are "excepted" employees or not "no later than Friday, April 8th" which means we'll find out on the very last day. We have extra $ saved as an emergency fund, but of course I would like to keep it there.

I can handle a week off, but more than that will definitely affect our budget and meeting our bills and all. I wouldn't mind having a couple days off so I can do all my spring cleaning. Having a 13 hour workday certainly makes it difficult to do more than the day-to-day cleaning.

There are a lot of people that I work with that will have a tough time meeting their mortgages if they don't get paid, since they live paycheck to paycheck, like most Americans do.

I'm thankful that we're frugal now...
