Today is a very special day in my family. My 6 y.o nephew, my only nephew, has asperger's syndrome and today we celebrate him and all of those on the autism spectrum. He is a light in my heart, whom i love dearly. Today is for you Johnny. Please help spread awareness today by wearing blue. Thanks for listening to me on my soapbox :)

:thumbsup2

Of course I'm wearing yellow as I thought it was tomorrow (but the chances of me finding something blue and clean is another story):rolleyes1

My son's an Aspie.

A life long friend and co-worker of mine has autism, that never stopped them from being the best at work and in the field for the past 30 years. (master tv&radio engineer)

@ C&G's Mama, not to worry i'm wearing blue top and bottoms (scrubs) that's enough blue for both of us !

Just as I was reading this an email came through to me in the background as I browsed Dis while waiting for emails to download...

The whole month of April is autism awareness month, at least in Canada. I am a bit saddened that Manny Malholtra can't participate in person at the event as he is recovering from numerous eye surgeries to try and regain vision to his eye from a puck injury. He has been quite vocal in his support for the Canucks Autism Network and working with the kids as much as possible.

We had a crazy socks day at college. I wore my best florescent orange and green socks. It was so funny seeing the strange looks I got walking through town.

Such a special time to reflect on all those affected by autism...whether they be parent, siblings or other family...or even just care givers working with people on the spectrum. I am a social worker dealing with children under the age of three with disabilities and disorders. Wishing all those "affected" all the best life has to offer!!!

When I was 12, I bought and wore a pair of bright pink socks to school and I couldn't understand what was so funny.

My Nephew Brandon Is an Autistic young man. He's 14 (and would so correct me if i called him anything but a young man) I don't think my brothers family knows of Autism awareness day is it national ? It's also funny that it's the color blue because my nephews favorite color (i mean really favorite color) is blue.

Just saw this and am so glad there are awareness days out there. Literally this week my husband has been diagnosed with Aspergers and with the exception of a few TV dramas we knew absolutely nothing about it.

He has had Dyslexia (severe) and Dyspraxia his whole life but it looks like his Aspergers diagnosis was missed till now - at 32. He has been suffering from depression for years and has been off work for 6 months so this is the latest in a long line of specialists he has seen to work out whats been driving his depression.

Its a time of mixed emotions for us both. Relief that we finally understand why he is affected so strongly by some situations and aprehension at what the future will hold. He has been prescribed some scarily strong meds but has been assured that they will have a big impact on his ability to deal with certain situations.

The Dazzler (my nickname for him) is the love of my life and it has killed me to see him so depressed for so long so I really hope this marks a new beginning for him - a chance for him to take control of life for the first time in a long time. Im starting to look through the online information so that I can understand how I can be best support - its another challenge that he cant read things for himself so I need to get my head round this fast.

All I can say is its less than 50 days till our Disney trip and never has it been so needed!!! Itll be great just to see the look on his face as we approach the world again - it was our Disneymoon last time we were there and its got very happy memories for us both.

I wish the UK was as advanced on getting awareness out there as in the States!

Jim and the Dazzler :)
