Unemployment question

It looks like DH is going to loose his job after 27 years. The dealer was bought out and they will probably close the Lincoln store. Anyone know what the max benefits are in Il? Our DD is disabled so we need to keep the insurance. COBRA is almost $900!

It is $388 a week. $75 more if the spouse does not work - do you work?
$144 more for a dependent child.

TN does not give more for non-working spouses or dependents either
SERIOUSLY!! I think there needs to be some revisions made here!

$2200 a week seems like a LOT of money. Here is WI, it is something like $363 per week. I don't know much about unemployment, but my friend is going through this.

TN - Maximum is $275 per week OUCH Lucky you to be in IL
Unlucky you to have to go through this

FL is the same way... I lived for over a year on $255 a week from UI....not a pretty time

No, $2200 can't be right. I'm collecting $388 per week right now with a working spouse and no dependant children.

Starting a new job soon and very happy that I only collected for a few weeks. Hope he finds something quickly!

OP, I'm sorry about the job loss. I just wanted to tell you, in case you didn't know (and providing it is still the same way today as it was a few years ago)

If you have flexible spending for medical, you can use the entire year's worth even though you have only contributed 3 months worth. PM me if that doesn't make sense.

Thank you all for the replies.

I wish that Flex Spending was an option for us but his employer doesn't offer it.

I'm going to start looking into private insurance but DH has been on blood pressure meds since he was in his early 20's and DD's medical history will probably make it nearly impossible. The COBRA cost is the same no matter how many family members we keep on so in the end, it may be the least expensive.

I'm calling DH's doctor tomorrow and asking him to fax all of his prescriptions to the mail order pharmacy so we can get a 3 month supply. We've been getting them locally since the cost is the same but they will only cover them 1 month at a time.

I'll check into All Kids again but last time I did, none of the specialists that DD sees will accept it because they're not getting paid by the state.:headache:

The only up side is that I think DH's work history will be an advantage for him. He's been at the same dealership for almost 27years. Being a journeyman auto tech, the pay is same per "book hour" no matter how long you've worked. The only difference is in how many weeks of vacation you have and seniority when it comes to layoffs. If he can find a opening, he's more marketable because he has a lot of experience and it won't cost the employer any more to hire him than it would to hire someone with less experience. Does that make sense? I'm trying to look at it as a positive.

I honestly never saw us in the predicament. The dealer has been open for over 60 years as a family business. Who would have thought that Ford would discontinue the Mercury line and that the owner's son that took over the business 10 years ago would blow through $10 Million on stupid stuff (he got into a "personal armored car business~ like everyone needs a bullet proof Hummer to drive around. :headache:, organic ice cream and pizza business, Mike Ditka's restaurant ...)and not have any money to keep the dealer open.

Thanks again for the help!

I am very sorry to hear of your situation. In California, the maximum benefit amount is $450.00 per week. If any money is earned at all, during the time frame to which one is receiving EDD Benefits, then the weekly amount will be reduced. It is best explained by an EDD representative.
I very much hope that your DH will obtain a new employment opportunity very soon, or maybe even create one for himself.

My DH gets $379 per week which includes a dependent child. They do give more for non-working spouse. You have to wait a week before you can file. After that, you certify bi-weekly and the money is deposited (we had direct deposit) 3 days after certification.

Good luck :)

From IDES website:
The minimum amount of benefits for an individual is $51 a week, and the maximum is $385 per week. Claimants with non-working spouses can receive up to $458 per week, and up to $531 a week with dependent children. However, your benefits depend on your unique circumstances

That is nice that some states have UI benefits direct deposited. I wish Ca. did. I have no idea why they don't.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. We did Cobra about 8 years ago and while it was a HUGE cost, it was invaluable. I ended up getting an autoimmune disease during that time (was only in my 20's) and the costs would have more than bankrupted us.

I hope DH gets a new position VERY quickly. Good job on getting the meds while you still can more cheaply. Anything else than can be done ahead, go for it.

Thinking very positive thoughts for all of you.

You might want to check to see if DD can get SSDI - depending on what is wrong with her then she will have Medcaid

Also, if your daughter is under 18, private insurance companies can no longer deny her insurance. If I am correct about when it went into effect (I think Sept. last year) Under the new Health insurance reform, private companies can no longer deny children under 18 coverage because of pre-existing. Unfortunately, that isn't the case for everyone yet but if your daughter is under 18 she would benefit from that. They will still probably jack up the premiums (In California, with any of the companies that would actually insure me, I was quoted about 2-3 times the "regular" premiums...so a $150 plan would be between $300-$450/month) but it should be cheaper than cobra.

However, make sure she is on anyways cobra because I think they can still pull the whole if not insured fro the past 6 months crap where they wont cover for a certain amount of time if not insured for the past 6 months.
