Everything Old Is New Again! - A Dec 2010 Trip Report : THE FINAL ENTRY page 45

You think that's bad? You should see the roads in Delaware! ;)

Hey, all I know is, we've always said that PA doesn't need to waste any money on "Welcome to Pennsylvania" signs. All you have to do is wait for the bump followed by continuous rattling, and you know you're there!

OK - I really need to know here... did you really only have 1 bottle of ketchup on your table, or did you just give them all away?!? How is that possible? And which one in your group asked for ketchup?

::yes::

Wow, everybody's just piling on the captain. His trip report ends but the harrassment continues.

Yes, let's please re-direct our energies towards harrassing Barry.

Just giving you grief. I agree, you can see the difference in PA roads right at the state line, and it doesn't matter from which state you're entering.

:thumbsup2 did you see the new sign on i81? welcome to pennsylvania , the pot hole state! :lmao:

Wait... you know who the Fonz is? Wow. That show was on in the '70's you know, right? :rolleyes1 You didn't know other '70's tv shows we talked about before on another thread (perhaps one of your other TR's?) - so I'm kinda surprised you know this one.
Know who the Fonz is? Who doesn't know who the Fonz is? I didn't exactly grow up watching the show, but I have caught some reruns. Besides, Milwaukee - and Wisconsin, for that matter - doesn't really get much attention outside of America's Dairyland. So for a nationally televised program to be set here was pretty cool.
Yup. I'm that easily impressed.

Yeah, that's kind of how I felt that Monday night meeting you all in the hub myself... but I won't ruin your report with lots of spoilers. I had spent so much time with others, and then had to get over to see the Osborne lights due to a "schedule change" the night before when I was first planning to see the lights, that I missed out on my time with you all. Bummer! But at least I was able to follow it up with you two other times in the days to follow. The rest will have to be followed up with at another time in the future.
I don't call them "spoilers". I call them "previews" or "foreshadowing". :thumbsup2

hey barry, i just noticed your vacation ticker, looks like another dis dad meet in june.:lmao:
Our dates aren't firm yet (screwy vacation rules at work.) We are for sure going to be at Animal Kingdom Lodge from June 27 - 30. Still don't know for sure if we are heading down on the 18th or 25 yet though.
What are your dates for June?

You think that's bad? You should see the roads in Delaware! ;)
Roads? I though they still had dirt paths that they drove the oxen team over. When did they get roads?:rotfl2:

Oh man! I wish I'd known that back in June. I would've definitely gone for bubblegum.
I was so excited when she told me they still had those flavors!
And is it that hard to print this stuff on the menu?

That's an awesome picture. You really captured the moment! (Or did Roxy take this one too?)
Thanks.
That picture is Copyright 2010 FreezinRafiki's Ace Rendering Technology. :thumbsup2

Wow! Another great update. And BONUS - it's great to see DisneyDaddy-O resurfacing! Hi Nick (for when you next read through this).
It's nice to see that he gets out of the kitchen every once in a while.

Man oh man do I ever get that!!! 1200... 2200 - it really doesn't matter - it's FAR away, and NOT easy.
It's not as bad, but the majority of my family lives about 2 1/2 hours away. It's really one of those "so close, yet so far" type of situations. Yeah, we can run up there and spend the day with them, but 5 hours round trip is a lot of time on the road. :sad2:

Love it at Whispering Canyon! And this is just one reason why - the staff!! We had breakfast there last January, and Harrison got up to use the restroom when he was finished with his meal. Raphael, our waiter, called to him across the room when he was done making sure he'd washed his hands. Later Annie was finished and asked to be excused to go play with the Lincoln Logs. I was just waiting for the bill at that point - and again, he calls to her across the room to find out what she was doing. Too funny!
We had Raphael the last time we ate there. (That's actually him pushing the girl who is holding up the jail cell). He was a hoot!

OK - I really need to know here... did you really only have 1 bottle of ketchup on your table, or did you just give them all away?!? How is that possible? And which one in your group asked for ketchup?
Come to think of it, we didn't have the ketchup gag at our table. None of us go fries with our meal, so no one needed it. :confused3

Gotta say, I feel sorry for the kid missing out on milkshakes for all these years. He's too old to be having his first milkshake. Hopefully he's making up for lost time now. I love me some milkshakes.
From what I've heard since the trip, he's been asking for them quite frequently.
I remember Evan's first shake. He was probably 3 or so and we were driving through Chicago and ran through the drive through at the Steak 'N Shake in Gurnee. One of us got a chocolate shake and gave it to him to take a drink. He clamped on to that cup as hard as a little kid could and shot absolute daggers from his eyes when Bambi tried to take it away from him. :lmao:

Yes, let's please re-direct our energies towards harrassing Barry.
Oh oh.

:thumbsup2 I like harrassing Barry. I do it all the time.
Just like our high school guidance counselor said - find something you're good at and stick with it.

I knew you were a good woman! :thumbsup2

By the way, I've been encouraging my wife to read this TR so she can harass Barry, too. :grouphug:
Oh good. I thought I was getting off kind of light in the harassment. Thanks for calling in reinforcements.

It's not exactly an update, but the Photopass CD came in the mail the other days. Over 600 photos! There are a bunch of duplicates, but I've got a whole bunch more to go through. :surfweb:

We are still waiting for ours... I wish it would hurry up... I have a few that I would really like for my report. :surfweb:

Hi Barry - I'm a little late to the start of the party, but better late than never! I blame Mark for making me take all the ornaments off the Christmas tree.;)

Here she is at Ohana's:
Disney_World_19.jpg

She. Is. Too. Stinkin'. Cute. I just want to squeeze her!! :lovestruc

Bambi took that as a personal challenge, did the planning & budgeting, and invited them along.

You go girl!! That's awesome! :woohoo:

Always helpful to have the wife on board to keep things honest. Or join in the insults. :sad2:

When did I ever do that to you? :confused3

That goes for everyone - if you have your first Disney picture and want to share it, feel free to post it in this thread! That would be pretty cool!

I'll have to have my parents check the older photos. I did find (while cleaning the basement today) the ticket from when I went for the first time in 1985! Admission was $18 a day!

We didn't have much snow, and it wasn't wet enough to make a big snowman, but we did manage to get enough for a snowmouse.
IMG_2835.JPG

That is TOO cute!! If we get the snow they're predicting for Tuesday/Wednesday we are SO making one!

Our family has a tradition that we go to a local ice cream shop on day of the first snowfall of the year. It usually at 7 block drive. This year it was 1200 miles - but the tradition continues!

That is an awesome tradition, my friend. :cloud9:

After everyone woke up, we made our way over to see what was tucked up under the traditional Christmas tree.

Love it!! :santa:

No, it's Spanish Moss. Madison became enthralled with this stuff that hangs from all of the trees around Grandma & Grandpa's house over our last few visits. So, grandpa packed some up and gave it to her.

That's great! Can they send some to me! I'm with Madison, I LOVE that stuff!

She did take a very nice group shot of all of us, though. I mean look a this - 8 people, all looking at the camera. 7 of them smiling - the 8th is probably smiling, but has a fork in front of his mouth. Can't ask for much better than that!

No, you can't! That's great!

She made him a special shake - layered with every flavor of milkshake they have.

That's why Disney is so great! They do stuff like that. (BTW, great picture Barry +1 :thumbsup2)

By the way, I've been encouraging my wife to read this TR so she can harass Barry, too. :grouphug:

And here I am. I better get a big welcome.

:welcome:

Now let the harassment begin. :rotfl2:

Where is the update my love? :confused3 You sent me a text earlier about how bored you were at work and yet no update? :confused3

I know you can't do one tomorrow because of the very long honey do list that you have. :rotfl2:

I'm still waiting for a picture of the cow in a bikini ornament.

Well...OK, but not too hard. While she is built like a middle linebacker, she is still technically breakable.

I'll have to have my parents check the older photos. I did find (while cleaning the basement today) the ticket from when I went for the first time in 1985! Admission was $18 a day!
I'll have to check my receipts, but I'm pretty sure we paid more than that on this trip.:confused3

That is an awesome tradition, my friend. :cloud9:
::yes::

Knowing Mark, he'd get the mail that day, throw out all of the packing material and wonder why and empty box came from Florida. :rotfl2:

Thanks! I love getting points in my own TR.:woohoo:

And here I am. I better get a big welcome.
[BIG] :welcome: [/BIG]
Well, I tried, but I guess you just can't just make up your own tags. :confused3

Now let the harassment begin. :rotfl2:

Where is the update my love? :confused3 You sent me a text earlier about how bored you were at work and yet no update? :confused3

I hope everyone is having a great Monday. We've been busy, but I wanted to make sure everyone knows that I haven't forgotten about you! The bathroom remodel is nearly complete - just need to install new bath fixtures. We still need to empty out our bedroom and paint it before the new carpet gets installed next week. Evan's room is also getting new carpet, so we have to get all of his stuff out, including dissembling his loft bed.

We were also unexpectedly out of town this weekend visiting ailing relatives. Not exactly a relaxing weekend getaway (6 hour drive in a snowstorm:scared1:), but we're home safe and sound.

But I'm back at work today, and should have time to get an update done.

When we left off at the end of my last entry, I had parted ways with the group. I was headed to the parking lot to drive back over to Saratoga Springs to get checked into our Treehouse villa. Grandma & Grandpa took the other car from Wilderness Lodge over to Fort Wilderness, where the kids were going to go on pony rides.
The wind was whipping pretty good out on the water as Bambi and Kaylene took the kids over on the boat.
IMG_2952.JPG

Meanwhile, I arrived back at the Carriage House at Saratoga Springs and stood in line to get checked in. I had done online check-in a few days prior, so I was thinking that this should be a fairly quick task.
They had about 4 or 5 stations (out of probably 15) dedicated to on-line check in guests, so it was only a few minutes before I was speaking to a cast member about getting checked in. This is where things started going bad.
Disney was (and, I believe, still is) in the process of switching their reservation computers over to a new system. I don't know if that was the root of my problems, but it certainly didn't help matters. I could see part of the CM's computer screen, and she was flipping back and forth between two different areas of the reservation system. I don't recall exactly what the problem was, but she said she was going to have to have someone cancel and rebook my reservation, and it would take about 5 or 10 minutes. Not having any alternatives, I agreed.

[I'll skip the 10 minutes of idle chit chat and awkward silence and get right to when the reservation was rebooked]

She told me we would be in 7047, but again, her computer was giving her conflicting information. One spot said the room was empty and ready to be released, while another still showed that housekeeping had not released it yet. She called over a manager, who said he would send someone over right away to verify that it was ready for us. He didn't want me to get all the way over there, just to find a problem with the room and have to come back. Keep that little nugget of information in the front of your mind. It may be useful. :headache:

Finally, after - and I kid you not, because I checked the time stamps of text messages that I sent to Bambi updating her on the progress - 30 minutes, the manager finally got clearance that the room was ready.

I took my welcome packet and keys and headed over to the Treehouses...

Meanwhile, the kids were having a great time at the pony rides.

Tonka, Nemo and Snickers were on duty today.
IMG_2954.JPG

The pony rides have become a tradition for us. The kids love them, and it's a (relatively) inexpensive way to spend our first Disney Day. I'm sure if Bambi has anything interesting to add about this, she will. I wouldn't know, I was still over at Saratoga Springs...

The Treehouse Villas are part of Saratoga Springs as far as check-in and amenities are concerned. But physically, they have their own entrance and parking. I drove over (about a 3 or 4 minute drive one you navigate all of the parking lots and gate houses), and was soon attempting to get the automated gate to work with my KTTW card. I tried all 8 of our keys, and each one would make the little light turn red and not raise the gate. Finally, I pushed the "help" button. Instead of someone coming on the speaker and asking what was wrong, the gate just opened. After all that messing around, Bambi called to let me know they were done, so I never did even find our Treehouse. I ran back over to Fort Wilderness and picked up Bambi and Kaylene. Grandma & Grandpa were going to take the kids for a little drive to see if they would fall asleep. They, along with me, were getting a little crabby by this time.

We drove back over to the Carriage House (you remember, where that nice man didn't want me to get all the way over there, just to find a problem with the room and have to come back) , where I was lucky enough to find a manager standing right in the middle of the lobby and I let her know exactly what happened and how it made me feel (hint: ). She apologized and disappeared into the back for about 10 minutes. She came back out, apologized again and gave me new KTTW cards. We don't use our cards for charging, but she added a $100 credit to my account and gave my card charging privileges. You know, it's really hard to stay mad when someone essentially slips one of these in your hand:
New100front.jpg

Well, more like two of these, but you get the idea.
fifty.JPG

By this time, everyone else had made it back to Saragota, and we all headed over to the Treehouse. Miracle of Miracles, the gate worked! We found our villa - and the door didn't unlock. Look who's back ->
I did get one of the keys to open the door, but none of them did it consistently. So while everyone else unloaded, it was back to the check in desk for me. Remember that place? Where that nice man didn't want me to get all the way over there, just to find a problem with the room and have to come back.

This time, another manager apologized and promised to make it right. It took about 10 or 15 minutes, but he completely canceled and rebooked my reservation and made new keys. He made sure the $100 credit was still on my account. I was hoping he would do a little more, but by this time I really didn't care to hang around anymore and I just left. I got back and tested all 8 keys in the security gate and the door, each one finally working as they should.

Up next:
I cool off (literally and figuratively) with a dip in the pool, and Evan treats us all to dinner.

Yay, nice to see another update. What a bummer though for you with all of that frustration. I had a similar problem with my check-in process when I got there the next day, over at AKV... due to that "upgrade".

Great pictures of the pony rides. They look very cool, and the kids look like they really enjoyed them. :thumbsup2 Nice.

Now that you've done your update, and I've read it, go check out my two updates.

Wow, I would have had a hard time keeping my cool. Sounds like a logistic nightmare that you have to drive all the way back and forth just to take care of something simple like a frickin key not working.

At least the kids got to have a good time riding the ponies and didn't have to see you with steam coming out of your ears.

I can't wait to see what Evan treated you with for dinner...

:thumbsup2 great update barry!!! glad to see you back. i hate when you have check in problems. we have gotten lucky the last few times. kids look like they enjoyed the pony rides!:thumbsup2
