Dining choices?

I think I have a very dumb guestion.
I looked at the dining system and was wondering if the "rotate system" is mandatory or could be book wherever we like a table?
Also I read some were they have a dining plan. What is it and can we book it ?

The dining plan is for the disney parks, not the ship. There is no need for a dining plan on the ship because 99% of the food is free/included in ship fare. If you do not wish to go to your rotation schedule one night, there are other options that you can go to......

The rotational system is mandatory as your server and all other diners will be moving to the next restaurant. Each restaurant has their own menu so if you didn't move, you would have the same menu for three days.

There is no dining plan on board as all meals and food is included. The only thing you pay for is drinks from the bar, drinks from Cove Cafe, snacks/drinks at the theater and some snacks from room service. If you chose to go to the specialty restaurants, that is extra also. Otherwise, all of your food is included.

you have the choice to eat elsewhere...i.e, Palo's (top end) or the Buffet....and room service.
