Everything Old Is New Again! - A Dec 2010 Trip Report : THE FINAL ENTRY page 45

Hi Bambi! :wave2: Or should I say hi to 'The woman who single handily kept a whole Brazilian Tour Group at bay, so we could have a good spot for Wishes?' :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

If only you knew what I put up with to keep that spot. I did lose my political correctness at one point during that night. It was a nice view though.

Remember, I'm a Cubs fan too. However, Rodgers is starting this week against the Giants. All we have to do is win our last two games, and we're in the playoffs!:woohoo:

That's right, I remember now that you are Cubs fan - my bad! Although we both may wish we were Brewers fans next year - adding Greinke was huge.

And wouldn't it be totally nuts to have the Pack and the Bears face each other in the playoffs?

Really enjoying your TR - looks like you and your family had a great time.

:welcome:
Wow, first response and I'm already a second rate Trip Report. :sad2:

No, there's nothing second rate about a Trip Report that goes back to the 80's for pictures.:thumbsup2
My first memories of Disney World were captured in similar quality photographs... I think my face was in 1 or 2 of them though.:rotfl2:

It does remind me how much I miss the Skyway though.

You did a great job saving that spot!!!:thumbsup2

I'm here! I've been looking forward to another TR from you after following your first two. I think we might have overlapped dates on our December trips, maybe? Looking forward to hearing all about it!

Love the old Skyway picture, by the way. Must have been a nice view up there.

I'll let Bambi do the entry for this update. It will be like old veterans sitting around telling war stories.

Well, the TR really hasn't started, but I'm glad you're enjoying it. :confused3

I do have a picture of my brother with a very scary Eeyore. Maybe I'll get around to posting it, but it's not for the faint of heart.

What a beautiful family! I look forward to reading more.:yay:
:welcome: and thanks!

I guess since I didn't actually give any details on our dates yet, I can officially say, yes, we did overlap by a few days. We flew home on the 12th.

Thanks to everyone for being so patient. Christmas has delayed my plans for an update, but I should have one up tomorrow!

Hi Barry, I have seen you posting on Mark's TR and thought I have a look at yours. I really like the introduction and am looking forward to more! popcorn::

How about a round of applause for my opening act, Captain_Oblivious!

Seriously, though, I've got a lot of work ahead of me if I want to have even half as awesome as his. But I'm going to do it or fail miserably trying! Either way - it should be entertaining for you!

If only you knew what I put up with to keep that spot. I did lose my political correctness at one point during that night. It was a nice view though.

Wait wait wait, this is to good to miss! Where can one read of these expploits Bambi? Please enlighten us on this one.
We were walking out of Fantastimic a couple weeks ago and got stuck behind the yellow suits,,,my son (12 yo) was so embarrased,,,he says, "Dad you can see thier underwear!" not much there to see either if you know what I mean. Poor kid had to duck away from them just to get the color back in his face! :rotfl:

I realized in my opening that I never laid out any of the details of the trip that seems to be customary. Better late than never, right?

Dates: December 4th - 12th, 2010
Locations: Grandma & Grandpa's house in Lakeland for the first night and the last two nights, with A TreeHouse Villa at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort for 5 nights.

Well, I guess that's that. Now (almost) on to the report...but first we need to start with a flashback. [Que wavy screen treatment and chimes]
Our last two trips were driving adventures. The last time we flew was in March of 2009. We left our house in Racine and headed north on our 30 minute drive to the airport for our early morning flight. It was early March, and snow can always be a problem. While there were flurries that morning, we decided to take the Jeep instead of the minivan. You know, just in case it snowed while we were gone, we might want the four wheel drive for the drive home. In the 18 miles from our house to the airport, it went from flurries, to light snow, to heavy snow, to white-out blizzard. I dropped Bambi and the kids off at the terminal and headed out to remote parking. Because, well, I'm a cheapskate. I parked the Jeep, opened the door, and stepped into a 12" snowdrift.
Anyway, we were delayed over 2 hours, but did eventually make it and had a great time. We found out later that the airport in Milwaukee got 14" that day. Not the City of Milwaukee, mind you. Just an isolated pocked right around the airport. The rest of the county only had between 2 and 6 inches. :sad2:
[Close wavy screen treatment and chimes]
Which brings us back to December 4th, 2010. Earlier in November we had a few flurries, but nothing that stuck to the ground. What do we wake up to on this day?
IMG_2817.JPG

Of course we would get the first snowfall of the year on the day we're supposed to fly! We were already on a tight schedule. Our flight was supposed to land at 6:14 eastern, at which time Bambi's dad was going to meet us at the airport and we'd head to Downtown Disney for a DIS meet with several members of the DIS Dad's Club at 7. We really couldn't afford any delays.

Our flight was scheduled to leave at 2:30, and I kept checking Frontier's website, and it never showed delayed. Maybe we would have a little Pixie Dust on our side. So while Evan and Bambi slept, Madison and I did some shoveling and playing in the snow.

IMG_2818.JPG

IMG_2822.JPG

We didn't have much snow, and it wasn't wet enough to make a big snowman, but we did manage to get enough for a snowmouse.
IMG_2835.JPG

Just like our last flight, we left the van in the garage and loaded up the four wheel drive sleigh and headed north to the airport. And just like our last trip, the snow got heavier as we drove. By the time we pulled into Wendy's for lunch, there was probably 4 or 5 inches on the ground.

Again, I dropped Bambi and the kids off at the terminal and headed out to remote parking. I'm a cheapskate, remember?

The airport was a breeze thanks to online check in, no checked bags and absolutely no security line. Within minutes, we were getting recombobulated. No, really, General Mitchell Airport even has an area of benches and tables just past security where you can do just that: (Please ignore the fact that's it dark outside for our 2:30pm flight. My picture turned out bad so I had to borrow a friend's)

We still had about 2 hours until flight time so we let the kids play in the kid's area down concourse D for a while. Soon enough, we headed down toward our gate when who do we see at the airport? Yup, the right jolly old elf himself.
Photo%20Fuse%20Holiday%20Picture.jpg

The kids had a nice chat with him, gave him their wish lists and posed for some pictures. I wonder how he got clearance to land a miniature sleigh and 8 tiny reindeer? Does he have to go through the TSA screening before he leaves? And what was he doing in Concourse D anyway? The International flights are in Concourse A at Mitchell. :confused3

So, we find a nice place to sit near the gate and watch all of the other families come piling in around us. Then, 15 minutes before our flight is supposed to leave, and without a plane at the gate, they announce our flight is delayed. No surprise there. We boarded about 40 minutes late and had a relatively uneventful flight.
Frontier has DirecTV on most planes in their fleet. I didn't pay for it (cheapskate) , but we were treated to a free screening of Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. They also have different animals painted on the tails of their airplanes. For those of you that like to keep track, our plane on the way down was Stan the Ram. (Picture borrowed from Wikipedia)

Soon enough, we were on the ground and in Grandpa's SUV heading toward Downtown Disney.
IMG_2839.JPG

Kaylene and Kayden had gotten down the day before, visited with some relatives, then caught a ride to DTD with Grandpa. We met them there, then headed over to Ghirardelli's for an ice cream meet with fellow members of the DIS Dad's Club. Left to Right, we have chilicoupons, dvczefs, GoHeard1028, myself, and DisneyDadC.
DTD.jpg

What a great group of guys. The waited around more than an hour after I was supposed to be there. Thanks fellas!

Ghirardelli's was, as always, fantastic. Our family has a tradition that we go to a local ice cream shop on day of the first snowfall of the year. It usually at 7 block drive. This year it was 1200 miles - but the tradition continues!

We milled around for a bit then headed over to the Earl of Sandwich for Grandma & Grandpa to get some dinner. (We were all full from our ice cream dinner. I love vacation!) There was a musician outside playing remixes of Christmas tunes, all of which had a beat that really made you want to dance. So the kids did.

IMG_2853.JPG

(I love the way Madison's beads are flying around in that last shot!)

Since this was Kaylene and Kayden's first trip, we all went over to the had store to get Mickey Ear Hats. Here the princess gets carried back to her coach.
IMG_2861.JPG

It was getting very late, and we had a lot to do the next day. We all headed back to Lakeland to get settled in for the night.

Coming Up Next: A fiasco checking in and (this is hard to believe, but I swear it's true) a very first milkshake

You'll have to wait a few more days for that one. But from what I gather, it's worth it!

I'm in and hooked!!

What a beautiful family you have! Love the fact that the Dad's waited for you! We're with you on the Ghiradelli's...dinner anyone?? We've done that on more than one occasion and I can still see my daughter's face the first year we went and said we were having ice cream for dinner...you can't buy memories like that!

Can't wait to follow along!!

I do not believe that it is in my best interest to recall all of the details in writing. We do have the ability to not incriminate ourselves so "I plead the fifth" :rotfl:

Evan and I were not sleeping. We were preparing for the flight and vacation by doing our last minute packing and cleaning.

We should have ice cream for dinner at least once a week. And it should be in DTD and Ghirardelli's.

You'll have to wait a few more days for that one. But from what I gather, it's worth it!

I never promised to give the full details. I will give the PG version of the events. I wonder if I would be welcome in Brazil?:confused3

Next time I get to do the fun rides while you sit and save a space of ground large enough for 6-8 families by yourself with a few strollers.

If only you knew what I put up with to keep that spot. I did lose my political correctness at one point during that night. It was a nice view though.
I do recall the look on your face when I saw you and from what I recall it wasn't a happy face. :lmao::lmao:

I should thank you for holding that wonderful spot for us if I didn't do it that night.... thank you! :flower3:

Which brings us back to December 4th, 2010. Earlier in November we had a few flurries, but nothing that stuck to the ground. What do we wake up to on this day?

I wonder if she was giving you the smiley face before throwing that snowball at you. :confused3

THAT'S NICE! ::MickeyMo

Yes, Barry. We remember.

The airport was a breeze thanks to online check in, no checked bags and absolutely no security line. Within minutes, we were getting recombobulated. That is funny!!!! :lmao:

Soon enough, we headed down toward our gate when who do we see at the airport? Yup, the right jolly old elf himself.

Awesome!!!! You guys got to see Santa before you left just like we did! :santa:
Then, 15 minutes before our flight is supposed to leave, and without a plane at the gate, they announce our flight is delayed.
Don't you just love that? No kidding! :headache: :sad2:

I was wondering if the plane left without you...

Left to Right, we have chilicoupons, dvczefs, GoHeard1028, myself, and DisneyDadC.
DTD.jpg
Awesome!!! I wish we could have made it too. Juliana was just shot after a long day. I think she passed out with-in 5 minutes of getting in the car.

Ghirardelli's was, as always, fantastic.
Is it a sin that I have NEVER gotten an ice cream from there? The few times I wanted to the line was out the door, so I just found a cocktail instead.:lmao:

Great update! Now I should get going on my TR....:rolleyes1:rolleyes1

Nice "snowmouse"! :thumbsup2

That area in the airport seriously says "Recombobulation Area"?!? :lmao:

Glad that you weren't delayed too badly and made it to DTD in time.

Ice cream for dinner...sounds good to me!

Looking forward to more!

You'll have to wait a few more days for that one. But from what I gather, it's worth it!

I remember that snowfall and how bizarre it was. I work in downtown Milwaukee and there was nothing! Glad you actually made it out of the airport that day!

How about a round of applause for my opening act, Captain_Oblivious!

Seriously, though, I've got a lot of work ahead of me if I want to have even half as awesome as his. But I'm going to do it or fail miserably trying! Either way - it should be entertaining for you!

You're too kind. But I'm just the warm-up act. I had to get off the stage for the main event! popcorn::

Now (almost) on to the report...but first we need to start with a flashback. [Que wavy screen treatment and chimes]
[Close wavy screen treatment and chimes]

Wow, you sprung for flashback special effects? This is obviously a high-budget TR. Who's directing? Spielberg?

I know I saw this earlier on Facebook, but I still love this picture. She looks like she's about ready to smack you right in the face with a snowball, but you'll totally let her get away with it because she's so cute.

I'm a cheapskate, remember?

::yes::

Nothing wrong with that. It's much more fun to spend money at Disney than with the parking attendant.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

That's AWESOME!

Does he have to go through the TSA screening before he leaves? And what was he doing in Concourse D anyway? The International flights are in Concourse A at Mitchell. :confused3

:lmao::lmao:

I wonder how jolly he is throughout the TSA screenings? And please tell me Evan asked for a Red Ryder BB gun!

Frontier has DirecTV on most planes in their fleet. I didn't pay for it (cheapskate) , but we were treated to a free screening of Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Hopefully the animated version and not the live-action travesty.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

You did a much better job of meeting up with the Dads than I did on my trip.

Ghirardelli's was, as always, fantastic. Our family has a tradition that we go to a local ice cream shop on day of the first snowfall of the year. It usually at 7 block drive. This year it was 1200 miles - but the tradition continues!

Now that's dedication! :thumbsup2

(I love the way Madison's beads are flying around in that last shot!)

::yes::

Looks like a nice start. I love it when you land in Florida, look out the window of the plane and see palm trees. Palm trees automatically relax you.

Even if it's 40 freakin' degrees in Florida.

Evan and I were not sleeping. We were preparing for the flight and vacation by doing our last minute packing and cleaning.

Uh oh. We have our first discrepancy in the story. This may require a Federal investigation if this keeps up.

We should have ice cream for dinner at least once a week. And it should be in DTD and Ghirardelli's.

MAN LAW!!!

Oh, wait. Bambi came up with this one. Let's call it a DIS Law.

I never promised to give the full details. I will give the PG version of the events. I wonder if I would be welcome in Brazil?:confused3

popcorn::

Next time I get to do the fun rides while you sit and save a space of ground large enough for 6-8 families by yourself with a few strollers.

I'm picturing Indiana Jones holding off hordes of snakes with a dying torch.

popcorn:: Sorry I'm late! Loved the opening special effects!! Also loved the photos of your family. I think I met everybody when we met in Town Square ... so Hi everybody!! The photo of Madison with the snowball is too cute!! Loved the photo of Evan as well. I have a grandson about that age now.
My wife comes from a family of 4 "biologicals" and 6 "adoptees".

Looking forward to more of your TR. Please carry on!! I need to learn how to write one!!

I'm in and hooked!!

What a beautiful family you have! Love the fact that the Dad's waited for you! We're with you on the Ghiradelli's...dinner anyone?? Can't wait to follow along!!
:welcome:
Thanks for the kind words. I actually planned to provide a semi-well balanced meal for my family. However, those sundaes are huge and no one was hungry after we finished!

I do not believe that it is in my best interest to recall all of the details in writing. We do have the ability to not incriminate ourselves so "I plead the fifth" :rotfl:
I won't make you. But the consensus with the readers seems to be pointing to you either telling the story or being chased through the streets of the village by an angry mob wielding pitchforks and torches. So it's really up to you...

Next time I get to do the fun rides while you sit and save a space of ground large enough for 6-8 families by yourself with a few strollers.
Yes, dear.

Nice "snowmouse"! :thumbsup2

That area in the airport seriously says "Recombobulation Area"?!? :lmao:
Thanks.
And my Photoshop skills are good, but not that good. Yes, that is an actual photograph of an actual sign in the airport. :thumbsup2
