Barcelona sounds wonderful! If we weren't already burning so much of DH's leave time (not to mention money) on the cruise, I'd probably talk him into going even earlier.
I seem to have a knack for ending up in the "dodgy" areas, wherever I go! I could manage, but DH would have a stroke.
The first time I traveled solo was to England, when I was in my mid-20's (seems a hundred years ago, now). My mom was all worried about me, especially about being alone in London, and I said, "The cops don't even carry guns there. Besides, it's not like I'm going to be wandering around Soho at 2 a.m." Well, guess where I ended up? Don't know how it is now, but Soho was pretty dodgy back then. I just put on my best "attitude" and got out of there - fast.
These days, my motto is, "I used to teach middle school. Nothing scares me."
Oh yeah, put us down for 2 pins and 2 lanyards.
Barcelona seemed very safe to us as we did tours with other DISers mostly. Our only one day by ourselves, we went to the Picasso Museum and walked all over the Rambla. We actually walked from the Picasso Museum to the El Corte Ingles to the Agua restuarant which was about 4.5 hour walk without any problems.
