About W.I.S.H

Within the DISboards, there is a group of DISers that like to talk about getting healthy or staying healthy, and all of the things that entails. They are called W.I.S.Hers. On this thread, TXBelle (Heather) shares the history of W.I.S.H. and how it all began.

You are always welcome to post on the W.I.S.H boards and ask questions, or to offer advice for someone else. Once you've posted, you are automatically a member of W.I.S.H!

Within W.I.S.H there are smaller teams of about 20 people each. You do not have to be on a team to be a member of W.I.S.H and you do not have to be a member of W.I.S.H to be on a team. They are just a way for smaller groups of people to get to know each other and to offer more personalized advice and suggestions.

How can I join a team?

Simply find the team you are intersted in (this post is a good starting place) and start posting. Introduce yourself and join right in.

About the Rebels

On February 7, 2009, windwalker asked for a volunteer to lead a new team he named Rebel Alliance. It didn't appear that there were many people eager to take on that job! Soon however, Suzann and scoolover (Scott) stepped up and offered to share the duties of heading up the new team. Back then, every team member had to announce their monthly miles and minutes and the team captain kept a team total.

Before long the team had 11 members and by June we were up to 14. One of the latest monthly threads was started in July of 2009 by Suzann until K80K (Katie) started one in September of that same year. October was skipped and a November thread was started by wdwprincess (Jane). By this time, most members of the team had drifted away. "Real life" got in the way, training slowed down, there was an injury... For whatever reason, it appeared that the Rebels had disbanded.

In January of 2010, deekaypee (Debra) started asking for opinions for the new year and scoolover (Scott) offered to re-start the Rebels. He started a thread asking if any past team members were interested in coming back, and a few did. Then jmasgat (Maura) started filling the team in with brand new people who were either new to W.I.S.H or were ready to join a team. The numbers rose quickly and before long the team had 20 members.

For personal reasons, scoolover (Scott) asked disney_mommy (Andrea) to take over as team captain in February 2010. She accepted and the team is in its current state.

Let's see... I am thankful that my teammates haven't kicked me out yet for lack of posting. A problem I will remedy soon. :thumbsup2

ETA: I am also thankful for the Edit button.

Okay, my friends. Here's the scoop - I was swept at the Wine & Dine and felt pretty crappy about it for a long time. It made me avoid this thread (although I hadn't been super consistent beforehand).

But, I have made my peace with it and am ready to move on. Here's a quick recap:

Started with a few friends (very close to the end of the corrals, big mistake) and 1 took off running immediately (I'm a walker), 1 dropped out after a mile because of medical reasons (she's fine now), I started to slow around mile 3 (at the first hill) and sent the last friend on ahead of me. In hindsight, I should have stayed with her, she could have kept me on pace. At this point, I started to drop out in my mind, you know, telling myself why I couldn't finish. The pacers passed at about mile 4 and the bike dudes gave ample warnings to us at the back that we needed to speed up. Even after the warnings, I didn't speed up or make an extra effort. Finally, at mile 5, they had pulled the bus across the path so everyone had to get on. At first I was kind of relieved about being done, but by the time the bus pulled up to the finish line, I was crying and very angry at myself. Technically, there was no physical reason that I couldn't finish. It seemed like my heart just wasn't in it.

At first I was really peeved off and didn't want to talk about it, then I got sad, finally I accepted that there were lessons to be learned. I did learn a lot, about myself and my friends (every one of them is awesome).

For a long time, I didn't think I would do another race, but then I realized I didn't want that to be my last race experience. So I decided to go ahead and do the Princess again, which was my very first race. I just started over brand new with the C25K program, and I am going to try to PR at the Princess.

So there's my story of the Wine & Dine.

Also, just want to tell what I've updated in the first post:

1. Instructions for joining a team - there is no longer one person keeping track of the teams and the members. From now on, when someone wants to join a team, they go right to the team's thread and start posting. Basically, the teams are wide open.

2. When someone has posted a recap of their race experiences, I will link to that post next to their name under the race calendar.

If anyone else has suggestions or questions, please speak up. :thumbsup2

Andrea:grouphug: I missed you but and so glad to have you back!!
I am sorry about your Wine and Dine experience but thank you for sharing it! I'm so happy that you are getting back out there and doing another race! Way to "get back on the horse"!!! You CAN do it! I know it!:cheer2::cheer2:

I like the idea about posting a link to race recaps! Great way to find them quickly!

Here is my workout for today
Can't believe it is November already!!!! Time is flying by!!

I started out the month right with a nice run/walk. My training today called for a 30 minute easy run. Well, I'm not up to running a straight 30 minutes yet so I ran as much as I could without killing myself and then walked in between! I felt great and the running was not as hard as I thought it was going to be!

The main problem I am having is figuring out when I'm going to get in my workouts! I'm so used to getting up, working out, doing a little houe work and then going to work! I need to mix it up due to lack of sunlight. Next time I'm going to try getting up, getting house work done and lunch packed and THEN going for my walk. I think it would be a better use of my time! Trial and error is the name of the game!

I was supposed to run for 30 minutes today.....I am NOT able to do that yet so as with every workout I modified it! I ran AS MUCH AS I COULD without feeling like I was going to die, and walked to recover! Looking back at my data it looks like I ran for 17 minutes of my 30 minute workout! Not to shabby! Here are the other details!

Time 31 minutes
Distance 2 miles
Calories burned 288
Best pace 10:59
Average pace 15.04

Days left until Half Marathon: 68!!!

I hope everyone has a wonderful November!!!!

Keep up the great work everyone! Remember we are here for support, encouragement and a shoulder to lean on!

Thanks for the welcome back, Nikki. For a while there, I was embarassed about the DNF, but then I realized it was a learning experience, so I'm okay with others knowing.

It looks like you have a great pace, so you will do fantastic at your race, especially with so much time left to improve it. Your dedication is admirable. :worship:

Andrea Welcome Back! :grouphug: We've missed you. It seems like when you left everyone else did to. It was just me and Nicki out here. Sorry about your Wine&Dine experience.:flower3: We should have tried to meet there. I won't be at Princess, but maybe if it goes well you'll do something else I can meet you at.

Nicki Good job with the run. Have to start new things now that it is getting dark. I don't know what Andrea is talking about maybe the weather will cool down. My weekday runs are now inside on the treadmill in the AM, instead of outside. Don't worry about having to run the whole time, you can make it as a half with a walk-run mix.

Mike, everyone left because I am the life of the party, dontcha' know? Just kidding of course. ;)

The weather sure did take a turn, didn't it? It felt like summer was going to last forever, then all of a sudden, it's cold! I love it. I hate the summer and live for cold.

I'm planning to do a C25K tonight - week 3 day 1. I don't do it strictly as prescribed, with walking and run breaks. Instead of running, I do speed walking. Every time I try to run, it kills my shins, so I'm going to stick with the walking until I'm incredibly in shape (insert joke here), then try the running. But hey, I'm moving, and that's the point. :thumbsup2

Everyone have a great Thursday!

Mike- Thanks for the great encouragement! I'm inserting the running to help increase my fitness, as well as give me a buffer against the 16 min mile sweep!

Andrea! You are the life of the party!!:yay::yay:

Great job getting out there and getting moving! I am on my way out to do a workout and came here looking for some motivation! You gave it to me girl! Thanks a bunch! Now to get changed and "hit the road!"

See ya on the flip side!

I just wanted to mention a deadline for WISH racing team Hats and Visors.
I need the minimum numbers to place the order so people can have their Headweats before the January Races. If you are on the edge about getting one, now is the time - another order won't be done for another year.
Go to the thread, read the first post and go to the order form to place your order.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I've also been bad at not posting here but I hope to make up for that in the last two months before the Goofy. Eek it's getting close.

I did my first 20 miler of this schedule yesterday and found it a real grind (as you should). I was so far off my intended pace that I barely had time to throw on a clean t-shirt before walking (limping) up to the school to pick up my daughter.

The manly combination of damp, sweaty hair together with flushed and salt-encrusted face was greatly admired by the yummy mummies.

Hope everyone elses training is going well.

Liam

Nikki - I'm so glad you were able to fins some encouragment here on the thread! I know we started out great and I would love for us to get back to that.

Liam - Glad you were able to finish the 20 miles. That's the important thing, right? That's amazing, by the way. And that last paragraph made me :lmao: Did you also have a manly odor? Because that's what the yummy mummies really go crazy for. :rotfl:

Hi everybody. I did not run this weekend for the first time since May. That puts me several miles behind Liam.

Hard to stay motivated without a race on the calendar until 4/30.

Nikki, hope you are doing good getting ready for the half.

Hi everybody! Bob and I are still here! I feel so badly that I haven't been posting...
I detail my runs on DailyMile, and our half marathon training is in full swing. I contacted Disney with our pace requirements for corral placement after our last 10K in October and it looks like our pace is stuck right at an even 11 min/mile. At least we will have a corral and won't be in the last one with the walkers - I was worried about that!
We did our furthest run last Sunday, 9.5 miles! I was so proud when we accomplished that!
This weekend we have another 10K to do. It is a new race right here in our hometown so we had to sign up! It's called: the 1st Annual Just for Kicks 5K and 10K to support the Elizabethtown School District's Boys soccer program. I'll have a race report when we finish!
Hope everyone is enjoying running in the cooler weather! Only 57 days until the WDW Half!
Happy running!
Barb:cool1:

DISboards WISH racing team members....

If you are interested in the order for WISH Racing Team Headsweats hats and or visors please go to the following thread to place your order.
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2537249
I have to have a minimum amount of orders to place an order, so this is usually only done ONCE a year.
If you want a WISH Racing Team hat/visor for the up coming year's races, now is the time to get one.
I need the minimum order placed by November 20th to get everyone's hats/visors to them by WDW January Marathon weekend.

Thanks,
Tracy

Liam- The WDW races are getting close!! I keep switching from excitement, to nervous, to nervous excitement!! lol Keep up the great work! I"m sure those mommies couldn't keep their eyes off ya, noses maybe :-)

Mike- Did it feel weird taking a weekend off? Is there a race you could sign up for before April? even just like a 5K or 10K to keep ya motivated?

I think I'm doing well getting ready for the half! I've had a slight flare up of my shin issues (turning to rocks at the beginning of my run) but other than that I'm doing good!

Barb and Bob- Barb I added you on my daily mile. I just recently started using it and am still in the "learning process". I couldn't get in a 10K this fall and will be placed in the back with the walkers, however seeing as I AM a walker that is fine with me! How cool to have a 10K in your area!! All we have are 5Ks or 1/2s! I think a 10K is needed in my hometown!

Hello to all of the others out there! We miss you and can't wait to hear about your training!

AFM- I got in some good training at the end of last week (sorry I'm late about updating!) I've been adding in more running when required and it has been feeling good, sometimes better than the walking! I've got a busy week with my training and I think I'm doing a Jingle Bell 5K on Sunday! We'll see how it all goes!!

Keep up the great work everyone!!!!

HI everyone I am still here!
I have not posted in quite a while.
I am getting discouraged about my running, I am still at a run walk with 20 minutes total running yikes!
Hopefully through the next 2 months I can get back to it and feel positive.
I hope everyone is doing wonderfully
Kristin

Kristin- Keep up the good work! You have plenty of time to start increasing your run intervals. Just listen to your body!

Race Report here!!!

Margie and I did the Jingle Bell 5K today in Portage Michigan!

It was a walk to benefit the arthritis foundation. There were well over 300 people there of all fitness levels! The event raised over 15,000!

It was a relatively flat course with just a few little inclines along the way! We started out on some roads and then moved to a wooded paved trail.

We kept up at a good clip despite the cold weather and the wind! Once we got to the trail it was less windy and I can say we even got a little warm! We met up with a nice girl, Heather, who was walking the race due to a running injury. She teamed up with us because we "looked like serious walkers."

We finished the walk in 46:55 according to the Garmin watch which was REALLY close to the chip time. Margie finished 370th overall and I finished 369. For our age groups I finished in 39 and Margie finished in 2!!!

We stayed for the awards for Margie to get her medal! They had lots of munchies at the end, chili, bread, fruit and granola bars. The bread was from Panera so I grabbed a few too many pieces!!

It was a great race and I had tons of fun with Margie!

Side note: I did manage to fall/slide down the stairs this morning. I'm doing ok aside from a sore bottom and right shoulder (I was hanging onto the railing) Gave me quite a scare but I bounced back! We'll see how stiff I feel tomorrow from it!!!

Congratulations on your excellent Jingle Bell Run Nikki!:cheer2:
We are signed up for one here in PA for December...guess they start early out your way!

Well- I promised a race report for our 10K. It was this past Sunday here in our hometown. It is nice that more and more 10K's are popping up in this area but I gotta say - they didn't try too hard! It was run at the same time as the 5K, they just had us go back and run it again! (duh!) They didn't even have a water stop planned! I asked where the water stop would be for the 10Kers before the race started and the race director's wife said they didn't have one. I grabbed a water bottle and I was going to carry it the whole time then she came over to me at the starting line and said her daughter could hand it to me at the turn around. Her daughter was about 8 years old and I was a little nervous but she was so sweet and watched for me to give me the water bottle! I managed to catch my breath and get a GU gel down with some water at the halfway mark and my husband and I finished the 10K with a new PR 1 hour, 7 minutes, 3 seconds for me and 4 seconds for Bob! He's always a gentleman and makes me go in front! I like it when we can cross holding hands but the chute was too narrow this time. There were only 19 people running the 10K part and we were dead last! The ambulance followed us the last 1.5 miles. It was nice to get a new PR for the 10K - we beat our last time by 52 seconds, which put our pace at 10.52/mile. To top it off, I won a door prize donated by a local business...a free oil change valued at $34.95! I guess that is worth the humiliation of being followed by the ambulance!

Barb- Yes in Michigan we get a head start on the Jingle bell runs!! Surprisingly we have had a "calm" November! Haven't even really gotten any snow, which is rare for us! Great job on your 10K!! I think it would have been hard with so few people competing! Bob sounds like a great husband!

Have fun with the free oil change!:rotfl:

AFM- Pretty uneventful workout yesterday! Had to make myself run and then remembered how great running felt! Grearing up for a long workout this weekend! 80 minutes! hoping for 5-6 miles!

Take care Rebels!
