Travel Insurance for 1/2 cash, 1/2 points?

Just wondering if anyone can give me some insight into this. We used 1/2 cash and 1/2 points to pay for our upcoming cruise in January. I called Travel Guard (DVC's insurance) and was quoted $148 to cover both the cash and points. I gave them the amount of cash I paid, but should I (or can I) up that to include other costs such as gas (we're driving) or any pre-paid excursions we do on our own? Has anyone had to cancel and recoup expenses from them? Any info you can give me on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think that something like gas can be recouped as an expense, unless for some reason you have to drive an inordinate extra amount to get there due to a flight being canceled or something. You get reimbursed for expenses paid that you can't use (a flight you don't take; a pre-paid hotel room you don't use, etc.) If you don't drive there, the gas is not an expense, so there's nothing to re-imburse. If you get there, there's nothing to reimburse.

Pre-paid excursions that cannot be refunded should be included in your costs. Anything where the money is put out before the vacation, and can't be refunded (or fully refunded) if you don't go, or have to cut your vacation short for a covered reason.

I've had to put in claims for vacations 3 times. Once for a medical expense, once for a canceled vacation, and once for medical that resulted in missing my flight home. Did you have a specific question? I'd be happy to answer.

Thanks for your response!

I guess I'm just really looking for experiances others in my situation may have had in regards to filing a claim through Travel Guard. I haven't seen any posts about insuring points and cash. I don't think the price is bad, so I will probably go with it unless someone has another suggestion or point of view.

I don't think there are a lot of options if you want to insure the points. It's my understanding that very few if any independent insurance companies will cover points. The cash part is a different story, but it's usually easier to buy one policy that covers both than to try & cover them seperately.
