About W.I.S.H

Within the DISboards, there is a group of DISers that like to talk about getting healthy or staying healthy, and all of the things that entails. They are called W.I.S.Hers. On this thread, TXBelle (Heather) shares the history of W.I.S.H. and how it all began.

You are always welcome to post on the W.I.S.H boards and ask questions, or to offer advice for someone else. Once you've posted, you are automatically a member of W.I.S.H!

Within W.I.S.H there are smaller teams of about 20 people each. You do not have to be on a team to be a member of W.I.S.H and you do not have to be a member of W.I.S.H to be on a team. They are just a way for smaller groups of people to get to know each other and to offer more personalized advice and suggestions.

How can I join a team?

Right now, jmasgat (Maura) is coordinating the teams. Go to this thread and post that you would like to join a team. You might also like to mention if you are an experienced athlete or just starting out, if you are a runner, a walker or a biker or what your goals are. She will try to match you up with a team that will benefit from your current fitness levels and goals.

Maura maintains the team leaders and members and makes sure the numbers stay pretty even. She will decide when it is time to start a new team and will coordinate that effort.

About the Rebels

On February 7, 2009, windwalker asked for a volunteer to lead a new team he named Rebel Alliance. It didn't appear that there were many people eager to take on that job! Soon however, Suzann and scoolover (Scott) stepped up and offered to share the duties of heading up the new team. Back then, every team member had to announce their monthly miles and minutes and the team captain kept a team total.

Before long the team had 11 members and by June we were up to 14. One of the latest monthly threads was started in July of 2009 by Suzann until K80K (Katie) started one in September of that same year. October was skipped and a November thread was started by wdwprincess (Jane). By this time, most members of the team had drifted away. "Real life" got in the way, training slowed down, there was an injury... For whatever reason, it appeared that the Rebels had disbanded.

In January of 2010, deekaypee (Debra) started asking for opinions for the new year and scoolover (Scott) offered to re-start the Rebels. He started a thread asking if any past team members were interested in coming back, and a few did. Then jmasgat (Maura) started filling the team in with brand new people who were either new to W.I.S.H or were ready to join a team. The numbers rose quickly and before long the team had 20 members.

Because of personal reasons, scoolover (Scott) asked disney_mommy (Andrea) to take over as team captain in February 2010. She accepted and the team is in its current state.

Hi Rebels!!!

I big, GOOD LUCK, too our racers this weekend!!! :woohoo:

It looks like the Wine & Dine and my marathon is a month out. It definitely is getting crunch time! :scared1:

AFM – I am still plugging away at my training. I am pretty sure that I will have the legs ready for the marathon. I did 20 miles last weekend and the only thing that hurt afterwards was my feet. Yeah, those two are still trying to get use to the mileage, they are slow learners. Unfortunately, a little bit of slacking off with this week’s training. However, I did do some walking in the park on my lunch. I work close to a wonderful park.

I have a new race on the calendar, GO! St. Louis Halloween 10K in St. Louis, Mo on October 17th. I looks like a fun race and it has bling. :cool1:

Take Care and have a great weekend Rebels!!!

Have a safe weekend everyone!!!!

It was great meeting Tiffany at Friday meet here in Anaheim! Your mom was great too.

9 hours till the run for the half. Guess it is time for bed.

Run safe and healthy!!!

Congratulations
We had a bunch of Rebels racing this week. I am looking forward to the stories, here is mine.

We ran the 2nd Annual Morse Mini in Indianapolis. It was put on by the Hamilton Hights High School Booster Club, and each of the water stops was manned by one of the high school athletic teams. It was a small event, 200 runners.

It started out nice and flat with a slight downhill, and runs through a small town and across a reservoir. Then it went out into country roads surrounded by corn and beans with nothing to block the winds. 10 MPH with 20mph gusts. Miles 11-13 were sheltered by trees and crossing the river that feeds the reservoir.

Last 0.1 was upwind to finish. 2:24:55, or just over 11min/mile. Rose finished in the top half of her age group. My age group was crazy 12 of 15 were under 2 hours.

Rose posted pictures on the BL thread here:http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=38101228#post38101228

Jane How did your run go with your group. Glad the plannar is gone.

Nicki Skip the one in your hometown if that is there attitiude, "Screw up the 5k." Sounds like poor planning by the race director if you ask me.

I'll do a quick recap of my half on Sunday - it was frickin' hard. I hit the wall at 7 miles. That's right - 7. Finishing those last 6 were one of the hardest things I've ever done. My lack of training was harming me both physically and mentally. My shins and thighs and my feet hurt. My back started hurting, too, so that it hurt to twist my upper body. Then I got a knot in my right shoulder so it hurt to move my arm. I didn't eat enough that morning so I got really hungry and weak. Then I ate too much Gu and thought I was going to be sick. I honestly don't know how I did it. I kept thinking about how pretty the medal was and how proud everyone would be of me and how disappointed they would be if I didn't finish. Twice I veered toward the medics to tell them I couldn't go on, then I stopped and told myself that I would keep going until I literally fell out and had to be carried off. I swear the miles were longer than they were for the Princess. I kept thinking that I would never make it. I finished 22 minutes slower than my Princess time. But, I keep reminding myself that I FINISHED. I earned that pretty medal.

Hi Rebels!!!

Mike – Congrats!

Andrea – Wow, kudos on perseverance, talk about having a rough day. Congrats on getting your pretty medal!

AFM – Boring, just getting my training in. I did 14 miles over the weekend for my long walk. I pushed my son in the stroller the first 5 mile loop and was alone the last 9 miles. I am going to try to get all my mileage in this week, lungs willing. Well, I have 4 weeks until the big day. I am a little undertrained but hopefully I can pull it off. This weekend is my last 20 miler and then I start taper madness. Actually, I am looking forward to some major cutback, especially on the weekend walk. Yeah, my health kind of stinks at the moment. I still have a hard time believing that asthma can hit a person that fast.

Anyway, have a great training week, Rebels!!! Take care!

Big Congrats to everyone on their races this weekend!!!!!

Mike - I loved your pictures. You guys are well prepared for W&D.

Andrea - I'm sorry to hear you had such a terrible race. I feel for you. But just think anything is better than that race. Maybe you needed that to have the best race time in October. :thumbsup2

James - way to stick with the training. I can't believe your marathon is almost here. Enjoy your taper.

Can't wait to hear from our Disneyland runners.

AFM, I did not run with the group on Saturday. The PF is not completely gone. Just kinda being annoying. I did get 4.5 miles in on the TM on Saturday. Was hoping for 5, but heel started to flair up at 4.5 so I stopped. Going to try outside running again this evening. The weather here is glorious. Hopefully if I can get some outside runs in again, I can try to join my group again this weekend.

Have a great short week Rebels!

Hi Rebels

Checking in. Last night I was finally able to run outside on the pavement. :goodvibes . Did a short 30 minutes last night at a super slow pace. But I had minimal heel pain. I'm feeling great today. Hoping to be able to complete the 8 miler with my group on Saturday. Starting to get RIDICULOUSLY excited about going to WDW in 3 weeks. I can't wait to go.

Hope all is well!

James Nice job getting 14 in. I am sure you will be good in OCT for your race.

Andrea Good job on finishing. Maybe a bad Rock'n'Roll will mean a good Wine'n'Dine

Jane Hope your 8 went good today, we just did 6 as a recovery.

Pat How did DL 1/2 go. I saw where some peoples times were off by 15 minutes.

If anyone doing WnD is sticking around Sunday night and not doing MNSSHP we are thinking of going to the Piano Bar then. Would like to meet some of you in person.

Have a good week rebels! We are heading out to watch SC football on TV (DS is there) GO GAMEC****S.

You all are so inspiring. Checking in really helps motivate me on those "uuuhhhhh" days.

Mike...love the idea of the smaller race with all the teams helping out. That is what it should be about. I gotta look for some of those to suppliment the bigger races I have planned.

James...good luck with the marathon. it will be here in no time at all (not sure if that is a good thing or not.

Jane...hang in there and remember it is about the big picture. Hope you are able to get back with the group soon.

Andrea...WAY TO GO!!!!!! It is all about finishing and the journey to get there. Enjoy that BLING with pride.

AFM...My Disneyland Half went well. Finished around 2:35 or so. I havent even looked yet. I spend the first 7 miles or so with a friend doing their first half and then they insisted I got ahead at that point and finish the race. He was a little overwhelmed with 13 miles, but finished it proudly. After 4 miles he was ready to walk, which suprised me, because he said that he had run 5 miles last week. I did not realize that was his weekly total and when I asked he said " well I didnt do it all at once...it was like 20 minutes at a time" :scared1:

But it felt great to help him out and I still finished OK. Lovin me my Coast to Coast medal.

Next up is the Rose Bowl Say No To Drugs half on the 25th of Sept and then the LA Rock and Roll Half on October 24th. In between in the CHOC Walk at Disneyland at the begining of October.

Have a great week everyone. Stay Healthy, Run Happy, and make AMAZING choices.

Hey everyone!!

Sorry I have been so absent! I started school and it has taken a while to get into a good routine! I think I have finally found my groove!

Congrats on all of the good training and racing that has been going on! Great finish Andrea! I can only imagine how grueling those miles must have been! Good for you to finish!

Pat- how nice of you to help your friend! Maybe they will be open to some training advice in the future??

AFM- I have started school (physical therapist assistant program) and it is a bit intense, really throwing us in there and throwing a lot at us! But I am ready! I have cut back my hours at work to accommodate my school schedule. Lets just say we have had to tighten our belts at the Miller house! Not sure if I'll be able to get a 10K in this year with our finances, but that doesn't mean I can't create my own 10K and race it myself!

I think I'm going to be doing a M W F Sa running schedule now. Tu and Th are so buys with school that I don't know if I could do it. However I have made a friend who would like to walk after class with me and study/bounce things off each other. I don't think they could count as training walks though, but would be miles logged!

Take care everyone! I can't wait to hear from ALL of you!!!

Hi Rebels - Hope everyone had a relaxing weekend.

Renthead - OMG I can't believe you're friend only did 5 miles all week. You are a great friend for sticking with him though for as long as you did. Glad to see you still had a good time with it. Enjoy the Coast to Coast medal. :thumbsup2 I am going to try for this next year.

Nikki - You are jam packing your schedule with school/work and running. Way to stay committed though. Who knows, maybe your school friend might like walking so much perhaps eventually you could have training mixed with a study group. Way to stick with it.

AFM, I did 6 miles with my group on Saturday. My partner that I ran with wanted to cut the 8 short as his knee was bothering him, so I turned in with him. I definitely could have gone the full 8. I had minimal soreness for the rest of the weekend, so it looks like I'm going to be ok for W&D. And 80% is mental, so if I think i'm ok, I'm going to be OK. Took a yoga class yesterday at the gym, boy am I sore today. Not in the legs, but everywhere else. I liked it though. Think this will become a regular sunday activity for me.

Have a great week everyone!

Good luck to everyone running in an event this coming weekend.

Hope everyone has a healthy and happy couple of days!

Hi Rebels - Where is everyone? Hope everyone is sticking with the training and doing well.

I headed out yesterday with the group hoping for a 12 miler. Foot was a little sore even before we started. Don't know why as I was well rested. Once I started running I came to terms with just doing 10 miles. This would be my last long run before the W&D so 10 would be acceptable. Well I made it to 9. I'm kind of annoyed, disappointed, scared all at the same time. I really do hope I'll be able to get through the half. Getting swept is just not an option. I certainly have a new respect for athletes that get injured. Cycling tonight to loosen the calves.

Hope everyone is having a great September!

Man, I've been a bad Rebel these past few weeks! I know exactly why, too. I haven't been doing my training like I should, so I feel all guilty and unworthy of you guys, so I just don't stop by. But now that I finished my race (barely), I feel worthy again. Hope everyone can forgive me... :flower3:

Jane - Congratulations on finishing that first race! And let me tell you, 16.07 min/mile pace including potty breaks is awesome! You will be perfectly fine at W&D.

Glad your hell is better. That is no fun, I know. What seems to have healed both of my heels is changing jobs. I went from wearing tennis shoes all day to wearing heels and I guess taking the pressure off my heels and putting it on the balls of my feet did the trick.

Do not be disappointed in those 9 miles - that is a great long run before the half. The adrenaline and excitement will get you through what's left over.

Nikki - I agree with Jane, the Gu Chocolate Outrage flavor is my favorite gel. It's almost yummy.

Glad school seems to be going well so far. And, those walking miles definitely count as miles logged. It will be nice to have someone to talk with for that time, plus getting some studying done, talk about a win-win!

Stacie - I'm so sorry your pelvic bone is fractured. It may just have been a bunch of little things that added up instead of one big bump. The important thing now is healing it. Don't push it farther than your doc suggests.

Manda - I'm so sorry you had a month long migraine! That's terrible. Am glad that you finally saw the doc and got it taken care of.

Pat - Congrats on the move to the new place. Glad that you seem to be settled in and happy. And Disney fireworks from your driveway? Now that is awesome.

And congrats on the race! That is a really good time, especially considering you were pacing your friend. And good for them for finishing, even though they seemed to have little training. :scared1: So jealous of the C2C medal!

Mike - Congrats on your great finish. That's an awesome time.

I am leaving Disney on Sunday afternoon, so won't be able to meet you. Have fun, though. I've heard the piano bar is a blast.

James - Sounds like you're on the right track for your marathon. You've been working so hard, fighting that ashtma. I hope the race is everything you are wanting it to be.

Let's all make healthy choices this week. :flower3:

Hello everyone! I'm been so busy lately and not following the thread. I'm going to have to take some time to get caught up. I spent the summer thinking about training for a 10K and then all of the sudden realized it was only 4 weeks away and decided to go for it. So today I finished my last long run/walk, 7 miles and the race, Freedom's Run, is next Saturday. I had thought about doing the half but was scared away by the hills on this course. Now I'm torn between never wanting to run that far and excited to think about trying.

Hey guys!

I've been buys with school but wanted to check in!

I got a new toy today!!!! The Garmin 305 has arrived!!! I can't wait to take it for a spin!!!! Official training for the 1/2 starts next week for me!!! SO EXCITED!!!

Enjoy it. It's such a fun toy. And when all else fails it gives me something to focus on when my brain doesn't want to run anymore. I start going what does this button do, what does that button do and then I've forgot that I'm running and i'm almost home. :goodvibes

Good luck to all of those doing the W&D this weekend!!! WOO HOO YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Just think of all the AWESOME food and DRINKS waiting for you at the end of the race!!! Wish I could be there to cheer you on!!!

CHEERS!
