Wanna know more about us? Check out some of my previous trips in my siggy. Otherwise, I'll spare you the details the avoid the risk of sounding repetitive.

What: A Quickie :rolleyes1 (that didn't come out exactly right... - or maybe it did) A weekend trip to Disney just for the heck-a-it.

When: September 3 - 6

Where: Old Key West Resort

Why: Um... do we need a reason? Okay, in our attempt to squeeze every last possible bit out of our "free" APs that we got from our wedding, we're taking a few weekend trips this year. This was one of them.

Okay... might not be back tonight - but will be back soon with the first installment. Welcome everyone :cutie:

Hey there Joanna! You got "free" APs for your wedding - how cool is that ??

Thanks for taking the time to get this started when you JUST got back! :goodvibes

:wave2: Hi! Thanks for joining in! Yes, one of the perks of getting married at WDW is that as part of the package they give you a free AP. I use free loosely, because you have to pay quite a bit for the actual wedding :cutie:

(sorry this first post is picture free... I promise the rest will have pictures.)

After a night of half packing, half watching Project Runway, and half cleaning the house (wait that's 3 halves…but third doesn't sound as good, so I'm leaving it, but I promise you know my fractions - I have my degree in Math for goodness sake! )

The 5 am alarm came too early. This is a full hour and a half before I would normally be getting up. If we were going straight to the airport, I would have been fine and happy, bouncy even. But nooo…. We were going to work - and because DH works 6:30 - 3:00 and we were just taking one car to the airport together, that meant - today so did I.

I'll admit it, I was more watching project runway than actually packing or cleaning the house the night before so in my pre-caffeine haze, I double checked my packing skillz. I found a few things I missed and stood in the garage and repeatedly asked "what am I forgetting?" I eventually came to the conclusion that the answer to that was socks. I went back in the house and picked up the socks, and we were on our merry way.

Morning car rides are hilarious, because there's no conversation, I may ask a question, but all I get in return are a series of grunts. We're not morning people.

So I get out of the rust-mobile and get up to my office - I notice it's 6:15 - I'm allegedly starting at 7. This is going to be a long day. So I rummage through my carryon, because I knew I threw a bagel for breakfast in there somewhere…. And suddenly it dawns on me. I know what I forgot. Our Magical Express Documents. They're sitting right on the table in the foyer under my keys, but since I decided not to take my keys, it never entered my mind.

Now I'm faced with a deli-emma the ME documents aren't mission-critical. (At this point I quadruple checked that I have our APs - I did!) They'd just save some time. I have plenty of time right now - since I'm sitting at work at 6:15 (well 6:17 by this point) and I don't have to be there until 7. I could easily drive home and get them and be back before anyone noticed…. Except, I didn't drive today. DH works just a few blocks away, so I could theoretically walk over and get his car and steal his keys (remember I don't have mine which is what got us here to begin with. ) But DH drives this old diesel, jetta that barely runs and is stick shift. It's not that I don't know how to drive stick shift - in theory I've got it down… it's just… stick shift and I don't get along very well. It's purely a coordination thing on my end, and I'm pretty sure if can sense my fear and spazzyness so it purposely does weird things when I drive. Previous encounters have been amusing (for DH, not me) and full of stall-outs and gear grinding. Probably not good to try to drive it 20 miles on the freeway there and back .

It’s now about 6:25, so I call DH and ask him what he thinks I should do. His words were "no, don't drive the car - I like this one" okay… so that's out. He's supposed to start work in mere minutes, so he says he'll call me if he gets out early and can go get it. This worries me, because my DH can make a 10 minute trip last 3 hrs, and not realize it. There's some sort of time-suckage vortex swirling around him. And besides not wanting to be stuck at work any longer than I need to (I'd already clocked in 40 minutes of extra time before 7:00, because I can't sit at my desk and not do work. It's a sickness.) knowing him, there was a real possibility of missing the plane if he was left to his own devices.

Grr… not the best way to start out our trip. But at least it's the ME documents and not the APs or our medications or something… We can live with out ME documents.

The rest of the day crawled by like a big fuzzy caterpillar. Slow and nibbling on everything in it's path. I felt like it should be lunch time by 9:30! Fridays before long weekends are always long and slow - everyone with 1/2 a brain and vacation time to burn has taken the day off. Fridays before long weekends when your going to Disney are interminable. By lunch time, I felt like the day just might not ever end.

Just when I was pretty sure that my clock was moving backwards in time, DH called me and said he was done for the day and asked if he should go get the ME booklet. I said no, we could just show our IDs and we'd be fine.

Around 3:30, he called and said he was outside my office building, so I quickly ran away before anyone could give me anything to do that would prevent me from leaving.

We stopped at the grocery store to pick up some starbucks via and some breakfast for the weekend, as well as some dinner for the airport. Then, we slowly made our way to the airport. There is a ton of construction on both freeways leading to the airport, so we picked the lesser of the two. It still took a good 30 minutes to get there - it should have taken 10. But either way, we were finally officially on our way...

Woohoo! A TR!!! I think I should have my students study your TRs as literature. Besides being insanely hilarious, you use lovely figures of speech. Haha, I liked the big fuzzy caterpillar simile!

Haha... I had to show this to my English teacher mother. She just groaned. Me and literature...:rotfl:

I'm here...can't wait to hear how everything goes!:goodvibes

:wave2: Howdy stranger! Hope things are well, thanks for joining in!

Whomever said "getting there is half the fun" never traveled with me. I hate getting there days. They always go on forever and are super stressful.

We made our way into the parking structure at the airport. The sign said 1000 spots available on level 3. What it didn't say, was level 3 was being renovated and those spots were all roped off. Eventually, we found a spot…

parking.jpg

What did people do before cellphone pictures? DH looked at me so weird when I took that picture, but when we landed, it took me 15 seconds to figure out where we were parked!

Car secured, we made our way into the terminal.

We printed out or boarding passes the night before, so we just headed into security. Milwaukee has the BEST sign ever in security. Someone has an awesome sense of humor.

recombobulation.jpg

It was still about 2.5 hrs before our flight time - normally we don't get there that early, but it's just how it worked… We weren't hungry yet, so we decided to get some Margaritas at Chilli's.

Chillis1.jpg

Omg was that a crazy mess! They had us packed into that chillis tighter than clothes in a vacuum-sealed bag. It took about 2 hrs to get 2 margaritas and an appetizer platter.

Chillis2.jpg

The margaritas were smaller than at a normal chilli’s and seriously a little more expensive! $50 later, we realized this probably wasn't the best idea… oh well - we're on vacation.

Waitress… where are you?? Helloooooooo?

Chillis3.jpg

Once we actually got our check, we settled into some seats at our gate and read our books.

Airport.jpg

DH was whining that there was nothing to read, so I told him to read the Hidden Magic book. He kind of scoffed at me like "why would I read that." I assured him he would like it. He went to the newsstand and bought a hotrod magazine instead. Whatever.

We got on the plane, I booked us on the side of the plane that has only 2 seats, but of course - we were over the wing. I can't ever seem to not be on the wing (except for last time when I was in the way way way back of the plane…but that doesn't count)

The flight was uneventful. We contemplated watching another movie, but opted to read and nap instead. About 1/2 way through the flight, DH started whining about nothing to read again, so again I told him to read the hidden magic book. He threw it open to a random page, I'm sure to protest and prove he wouldn't like it. Immediately he was entranced (Shout out to Sarah wdwgirl03 for the recommendation!) So he finally started reading from the beginning.

Sorry, no pictures - I didn't dare take my camera out on the plane again!

We finally landed in MCO and we sleepily headed to the ME counter. There was no problem not having the papers, and they were directing everyone to the counter anyway whether they had their books or not, so it worked out well. We didn't even wait in a line, we just walked right onto the bus, and waited a bit for a few more people.

Uhhh…. Where are we?
ChrisonME.jpg

Since it was so late, the ME was basically empty

ME.jpg

Eventually, we were pulling into Old Key West. Yay we were the first stop! On top of that, we were the only ones getting out at OKW, so double bonus - no lines checking in!

At this point we'd both been up for about 19 hrs, and we were fading fast! I had done online checkin, and it said it went through, but I never got the confirmation. It didn't go through, I have had the worst luck with that working! But there wasn't a problem. We checked in and were given a map and told to go to bell services. Well there was no one at Bell Services - there was only one person that late, and she was helping someone else. We ran into a friendly CM who saw us wandering aimlessly. I explained that we just got there and had no idea where we were, and showed him our map. He said that the bell services CM had just left to help someone, so it would be 20-30 minutes, but our room was walkable and gave us directions (thank goodness, we would have headed the wrong way on our own!)

So we headed out to find building #18. We couldn't see the path very well, so we ended up walking on the road - not super safe. Oh well.

Since it was after midnight, we really didn't see much of the resort as we were making our way to the room. We found our room, and headed in.

IMG_0017.jpg

I was impressed with how big it was. Much bigger than our studio at the BCV in June, and fewer points too!

IMG_0018.jpg

The one odd thing about this room for me was the bed. I'm a very short-legged person. I'm 5'1" and I have a long torso. The bed was on risers and came up to my waist. I had to get a running start to get on it! How do little kids handle it? I can't imagine…

IMG_0019.jpg

We quickly unpacked and headed into bed. We were both exhausted!

Hey Joanna! Sounds like a long, stressful travel day. Looking forward to hearing more about your trip.

I found a few things I missed and stood in the garage and repeatedly asked "what am I forgetting?" I eventually came to the conclusion that the answer to that was socks. I went back in the house and picked up the socks, and we were on our merry way.
I now have this awesome mental image of you standing in a garage meditating, looking very serious and spiritual, eyes closed, "Ohm"-ing and all that...then suddenly opening your eyes to say "Socks!" I'm totally getting a kick out of this right now. Perhaps it's because I overslept today and am only on my first cup of coffee.

This worries me, because my DH can make a 10 minute trip last 3 hrs, and not realize it. There's some sort of time-suckage vortex swirling around him.
My DH also suffers from this time-suckage vortex. It's really quite incredible. Or it would be, if it didn't make us always late. And he wonders why he never gets anything done...

Whomever said "getting there is half the fun" never traveled with me. I hate getting there days. They always go on forever and are super stressful.
And even when they're not stressful, by the time you're there you have to be all worn out from the getting there. Bah.

What did people do before cellphone pictures? DH looked at me so weird when I took that picture, but when we landed, it took me 15 seconds to figure out where we were parked!
Clever, clever, clever. Not sure that would occur to me, actually. But then again, I don't have a car and so rarely have to deal with parking structures.

And to answer your question: in the old days, we just wrote it down.

We printed out or boarding passes the night before, so we just headed into security. Milwaukee has the BEST sign ever in security. Someone has an awesome sense of humor.

Oh. My. Gosh. I have flown through Milwaukee so many times, and I've never noticed that! That is hilarious!

The margaritas were smaller than at a normal chilli’s and seriously a little more expensive! $50 later, we realized this probably wasn't the best idea… oh well - we're on vacation.
Airport Chili's are such a terrible tease to me. Because I love Chili's, and we don't have one near us, so my only chance to eat there is usually in airports. Where, of course, they suck.

Sounds like you got lucky with the ME...when my mom and I were there in May, we flew in separately. They forgot to send her her ME documents, and we didn't realize until it was too late for them to send them, and she had to wait forever in the line.

Attack of the MONSTER BED!!!

Can't wait for the next update!

Hey Joanna! Sounds like a long, stressful travel day. Looking forward to hearing more about your trip.

It's weird, most people hate the day coming home from vacation, but I'm usually relaxed by that point, and all is well. It's getting there this is so long and stressful.

Part 1 of our first day is coming up shortly.

Attack of the MONSTER BED!!!

Can't wait for the next update!

Haha... I assure you my garage chanting was neither spiritual or meditative. It was more akin to a dog chasing it's own tail barking relentlessly! :rotfl:

I'm "glad" ('cuz really I feel sorry for you) that someone else has a DH that is a master of time suckage. You'll see as the trip progresses, that my DH always makes us late too...

I love the recombobulation area! I keep looking for it at other airports, and I haven't seen it anywhere else. Guess it's because Milwaukee is just awesome :rolleyes1

I agree. We love Chilli's too, so we're always lured into the airport ones. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson when I got food poisoning from one in the Fort Lauderdale airport.... I'm a slow learner though...

We've had to wait in the horrible-long ME documents line before as well. I was hoping since we were landing so late it wouldn't be a problem - and I was right! I think if we were landing at like 3:00, I would have gone back to get them.

:rotfl::rotfl: LOL about the Monster bed comment! I seriously felt like I needed a trampoline to get up there. DH is always making fun of me for being short - so he had a field day with it. :sad2:

I wasn't quite in vacation mode yet, so I woke up at about 6:30 and was wide awake. DH was sawing logs next to me, so I quietly slipped into the shower and got dressed. I contemplated heading to the MK to finally see the Opening Show, but I thought DH would be upset I went to a park without him - so I thought to myself WWCJLPD? (What would Captain Jean-Luc Picard Do) (DH and I are huge TNG fans - we watch it every night can you say geeks?)(This one time after a long day, we cuddled up on the couch to watch it and DH said, "Wow, a cute girl and Star Trek - Can life get any better?... Wait, too many parentheses going off on a tangent...coming back.... Now...)

So anyway after contemplating what my idol would do, I decided to go and seek out worlds and creatures unknown. In this case - the grounds of OKW and a couple lizards. I really have to work on the whole "experience living up to the set up" thing don't I.

Since it was so early, it was just gorgeous out. Not muggy, just nice.

I walked back to the main building and checked out the shop.

I thought this teapot was cute!

IMG_0028.jpg

I bough myself a Peach Mango juice and headed onward. I walked past the pool which was nearly empty.

IMG_0023.jpg

A not-so hidden Mickey!

IMG_0022.jpg

I stopped to make a sand castle.

IMG_0024.jpg

I also took some time to play with some settings on my new camera

IMG_0025.jpg

The resort is quite beautiful.

IMG_0026.jpg

Even the ATM is themed!

IMG_0029.jpg

It was quite peaceful so early.

IMG_0027.jpg

The resort is huge and sprawling, but it doesn’t seem as huge as SSR did to me.

IMG_0030.jpg

I loved the detailing on the buildings

IMG_0031.jpg

After about an hour, I decided to head back to the room and see if DH was awake. He wasn't, so I grabbed doughnut and my book and went out on the balcony. Since we got there when it was so dark, I didn't realize we had a view of one of the greens of the golf course.

IMG_0033.jpg

IMG_0035.jpg

Sitting there made me think about my grandpa who died a few years ago. He was an avid golfer, and I could just hear him saying "yeah, I could stay here… this is nice"

102_0926.jpg

IMG_0034.jpg

IMG_0040.jpg

So, I called my mom to tell her and chat a little. She told me that she and my dad were buying a car that day, so we talked a bit and then I read my book a bit more.

You might be saying, "Joanna, you said you encountered new creatures" or maybe you're just scrolling through and not saying anything at all - but anyway... around this point I encountered this guy on a tree right outside our room.

IMG_0032.jpg

The picture doesn't show it, but he was rather large for the usual Disney lizard...

All this babbling and I'm not even to 9 am yet!

It was about 9 :00 and it was starting to get hot, and I could feel myself sweating out on the balcony, so I went into the room to read. I was disappointed that the room didn't have a couch. I'm sure if you had 4 people saying there, 2 beds would be better than a bed and a couch, but for the 2 of us, I missed the couch. I high-jumped onto the bed and read some more. At about 9:30, I decided it was time to turn on Stacey to get DH moving a bit. Oh how I miss old Stacey. She was obnoxious, but so much more fun. This version is just a snooze fest.

So by about 10:00DH was stirring, so I decided to seal the deal, and make him a cup of coffee.

IMG_0036.jpg

He was sort of starting to wake up

IMG_0037.jpg

My one complaint about Disney resorts – is can’t they upgrade the TVs? I don’t even think you can buy these dinosaurs anymore.

IMG_0038.jpg

I know most people don't go to Disney to watch television, but a few weeks ago we stayed at a Comfort Inn for $19, and they had a flat screen. For a hotel that charges $300+ a night - it just seems unreasonably tacky.

(...hold on....putting away soap box... back in a minute...)

We turned it on to the weather channel. Not Promising

IMG_0041.jpg

I made DH pack our ponchos in his pockets.

By 10:30, we were headed to the bus. There was this bamboo all over by the bus stop.

102_0928.jpg

102_0933.jpg

102_0934.jpg

Huh… where are we going?

102_0929.jpg

Um…. The Animal Kingdom or Crazy – whichever we get to first…

Oh…

102_0930.jpg

Oy…. This is going to be a long day!

102_0931.jpg

Okay… where’s the bus? Let’s go!

102_0932.jpg

There was a family there before us that was waiting for the AK bus too... so we knew we didn't miss the bus, but I swear we waited forever. A bus for every other place on property plus a few duplicates came by before the AK bus finally graced us with it's presence.

Finally, we were off.

Woo hoo, thank you for the OKW pictures! It does look beautiful! So excited to stay there. Can't wait to hear about your day. popcorn::

OKW looks beautiful!

I hear ya about the TVs. They must be planning on upgrading them all, right? And it's just taking them forever? It really is ridiculous.

Our family is like your DH, only we call it going on a "pop" run. It'll take us hours to come back from running up to the store to buy some pop (soda, coke, whatever they call it in your neck of the woods). Although we all do pretty good when it comes to catching a plane or arriving for dinner :lmao:

Looking forward to hearing how your day at AK went :goodvibes

Some people read books when they can't sleep...........................I read WDW trip reports. :rotfl2: I love them. I read the first entry and then decide from there. I can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

Pics of OKW are great. Looks like an awesome resort. :thumbsup2

i love reading your trip reports. i just joined the boards and i think i read all of your trip reports in about an hour. so im in on this one. also nice to see a fellow Wisconsinier. Wisconsinite? :confused3
