Type of Ice @ POP

I know this a strange question, but my DH figured someone on DIS would know. We are trying to determine what size the ice is at POP. Is it the square chip kind or is more of the round ice with a hollow center?

DH's back is really flaring up and we leave next week. We are trying to determine what the best way to ice his back will be. He is hoping it's the square chip shaped ice as those will be more comfortable to make packs out of with ziplocks.

So does anyone know?

Thanks!

I can't say 100% but if my memory is correct in July it was just the regular ice, no holes in the center. I got a lot of ice but frankly I didn't pay that close of attention to the shape/size.

I think the are basically the round bullet type about an 1" in dia, hollow. I don't think he will have a problem. If they are too large just hit them with a hammer. I would suspect there is somebody who will read this and is just back from Pop and can give you absolutely accurate data but if he is laying on the ice i would crush it up before you put it in the bag. Have you tried Glucosamine? I have a very bad back (crushed disks) and take Puritans Prides Glucosamine (#27814) and with it i have no pain and can move around w/o it i can't even walk, no longer climb steps and so on... It is a cheap try... It may help.

Depending on the amount of icing he needs to do I will offer another solution if the ice is uncomfortable.. Several discount stores sell icepacks that are the type that get cold once you "snap" them. The cold lasts about 30 minutes or so. I have used these for my knee and shoulder many times. OR, purchase a resuable "soft" ice pak and put it in the ice bucket filled with ice for a while. It will be cold enough to work.

The ice at POP is cubed shaped, don't think it had holes in it.

Not sure if this would help but I have recently had back issues that require icing and such and found a product at my chiropractor called "Bio Freeze". It is a gel that you rub on (like BenGay, only it smells like peppermint not that gross smell).

I find it works well. You actually feel like you have ice on your back for a bit then it loosens the muscles. I have bought extra tubes to take with me for my vacation.
I have only found it at chiropractors, so you could check into that.

BIO-FREEZE IS AMAZING! FYI, check massage therapists as well as online for it. It is also not greasy like the other stuff.

You beat me to it. I was going to recommend it too. I find it at my local drugstore.

Bio Freeze is AWESOME!!!! I love the stuff!!!! But the actual ice is much better for your body (shrinks the capillaries, reduces inflammation so new blood can flush the area as the body warms back up)....so if I were you I would use the bio freeze if you need it during the day...but ice at night :thumb

Thanks for all the info! And appreciate all the advice for his back too!

We are going to do all we can to make sure it doesn't interfere with our trip!

Just got back from Pop Century and the ice does NOT have the hole in the center. It was small enough that I don't think you'll have a problem putting it on his back.
