One of our reasons for trying all these different restaurants was so that we could visit resorts that we would (probably) never be fortunate enough to actually stay at. One of the resorts DH would LOVE to stay at is Boardwalk. Originally, I was not as enthralled with it as he was because: we LIVE at the boardwalk. We have 3 different boardwalks within a 15 mile radius of our house, so why would I shell out a ton of money to stay at...A BOARDWALK?! Well, after visiting I now know that it is a Disney version of a boardwalk...none of the trash, freaks, thugs, pooping seagulls, etc. that you find on our boardwalks. Also, there is: cotton candy in bags (no one actually spinning the cotton candy themselves), no waves crashing on the sand, no smell of french fries and vinnegar... As you can tell, I'm torn. It was a fake boardwalk, but almost too fake for those of us who live at the beach. Would I stay there? Heck yeah! It's beautiful. Is it a true replica of a boardwalk? Maybe so since they are going back a few decades. Also, sometimes a utopian version of something is a good, refreshing change. After all, isn't that why we all visit disney?
Onto Flying Fish...We were seated at a table in the middle of the restaurant, which was fine with us. The open kitchen was so cool to watch. Our server welcomed us very warmly and they had made personalized menus for our honeymoon. That was cool. The server really pushed the wine and we caved. Can't remember what we got, but it was yummy.
For an appetizer, I got the wild Gulf shrimp cocktail.
Yum, yum! This was so delicious. The red grapefruit added a sweet and tangy flavor (and I don't even like grapefruit) that made this spectacular. I could've eaten 5 more.
DH got the Jonah crab cake.
He then declared THIS the best crabcake he ever had. It was crab, not filler, and the coating was absolutely delicious.
My entree was the potato-wrapped snapper with leek fondue.
I gotta be honest, after the first bite I was really questioning my selection. It was a completely new taste to me. Then after bite 3, I was sold. This was really different and really tasty. Don't be fooled by the potato part. There are no visable or tastable potatoes. I was expecting it to be coated in hash browns or something, but the potatoes are so fine you don't even know that's what they are. The leek fondue was totally weird, but really good. Would I get it again? Probably not, but only because I would want to try something new.
DH got the surf and surf.
I don't know what type of fish it was, but it also had shrimp (it's not on the menu right now). He loved it. It could be because the dish was basically meat plus meat, but stilll. He could barely spare a bite for me to taste. What I tasted was good. However, the flavors of his dish completely clashed with the flavors of mine, so I stuck with my halibut.
For dessert, I got the sinful flourless chocolate cake.
Let me tell you, sinful is the appropriate word. This was so rich and chocolately, I couldn't stop eating it. Truly delicious if you like chocolate.
DH got the berry tart.
I LOVE blueberries, and this was delicious. However, it didn't hold a stick to my chocolate dish. Go with the chocolate!!
All in all, this was a great experience. The atmosphere was hectic and loud, the food was good, and the service was pretty attentive. We have noticed that (as a party of 2), once a large group comes in and has the same server, we are basically put on the back burner. Now, I've done plenty of restaurant work in my day, so I totally understand. They will provide a much larger gratuity, so I get it. Even though I get it, it doesn't make the 2-top feel any better to be left in the dust. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves seafood and who wants to check out Boardwalk. BTW, we walked from Epcot, so that was very convenient and very cool!
