Security/Carry On question

I know that drinks won't pass through security, except for baby formula/breast milk. What about juice boxes for the kids? I thought I read that was allowed... I'm also considering using my carry on to take snack foods for the trip, rather than take up space in a checked bag (it's not a lot, 8 individual bowls of cereal, about 20 little fruit snack pouches, 8 pack of pb crackers, and some fruit chip packs - not enough to warrant spending $$ to ship it LOL!) ... it will all fit in my FAA approved size carry on, but I'm gray on whether food's allowed thru security or if you can only buy food in the terminal to take on board

Thanks in advance!

The food you listed will be fine to take thru. As long as it's not liquid or a gel it won't be a problem.

Thanks! :goodvibes I found my answer about juices:

When traveling with your infant or toddler, in the absence of suspicious activity or items, greater than 3 ounces of baby formula, breast milk, or juice are permitted through the security checkpoint in reasonable quantities for the duration of your itinerary, if you perform the following:

1.Separate these items from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
2.Declare you have the items to one of our Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3.Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening.
You are encouraged to travel with only as much formula, breast milk, or juice in your carry-on needed to reach your destination.

I encourage you to eat the PB&J crackers *before* you board your flight, just in case there's a severely allergic person on your flight and the gate people forget to make the announcement pre-boarding.

We don't have an allergy like that, but once I thought "wow I don't think I'd want to harm someone accidentally", we started eating such snacks in the gate area, rather than ON the plane...an allergic person can at least get away if needed while in the gate area, but not on the plane!

We just buy juice once we make it thru security. You will find different airports handle liquids for babies/toddlers differently. Some don't have the equipment to screen these things without opening them. (El Paso being one of them)

We had an issue the first time we flew with DD. She was 9 months old and I brought the premade bottles from Similac. It was fine coming here from the Kansas City airport. However leaving El Paso they were going to have to open the bottles to test them, which would have made them no good, at least not for the duration of our travels. Luckily we had packed powdered and the flight attendants were great about giving us water to make her bottles.

Needless to say after that we just buy once past security. It's part of traveling.

Im sorry I don't get it. If someone is allergic to Im guessing peanut butter. Is it the small of peanut butter? I ask because I was just thinking of taking those Uncrustables with us on the plane. So now Im thinking that may not be a good idea.

Eat your PB&J to your heart's content. The DIS boards is overly paranoid. If it makes you feel better then don't bring them, but the world is not peanut free and if someone 10 feet away from me is so allergic to peanuts that they could die they should shrink wrap themselves and live in a plastic bubble and fly private jet. No airline can ban you from eating PB, they can make a *request* that you don't, but you will not be taken down by a SWAT team for PB.

for some it is the smell others need to ingest it. i have co-worker who is allergic to mint. the smell gets him. flying is usually not a good thing when everyone starts chewing their gum. unfortunately he has to fly for work.

Take your PB &J without worry. It is the peanut protein that folks are allergic to and you don't get that from smelling ground peanut butter at a distance. Concentrated dust and it has to be very concentrated dust can be a problem and a very very small amount of people are contact allergic and then it generally is only hives. So as someone else said the Disney board is overly paranoid.
I have never been on a plane that it has been announced and I flew a lot.

Probably not. I don't know if a three and a half year old is considered a toddler for juice purposes, but I know absolutely that an eight year old is not. Just buy them beverages once you're past security.

I actually pasted the wrong link in my last post...

This information is also found on this page Traveling with Children:

"Baby Formula, Breast Milk, Juice, and Other Liquids
Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding 3.4 ounces (100ml) and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. Click here to learn more about 3-1-1"

I'm going to take my chances and take a couple of Capri Suns. :wizard:

This would mean for the duration of your flight, not the duration of your trip.

We tried to take 2 Capri Sun pouches on a flight last October. When we got to security we were told that we could take them on the plane BUT we had to open both of them at security and they had to squeeze a little out and test the liquid. Kinda made it more trouble than it was worth trying to manage going through security with two kids, carryon luggage and now two open Capri Sun pouches squirting all over the place!

You will have a much easier time if you just bring empty refillable water bottles. Once you get through security, fill them up at a water fountain, or get a cup of water at a vendor. Bring some of those individual packets of lemonade/koolaid/propel and add it to the water. We do this all the time now, and people always comment on what a good idea it is. Traveling with small kids, the snacks and drinks never come fast enough on a plane! We also use these flavor packets at the parks and save a small fortune on drinks.

I don't know which airport you're using (does ManchVegas mean Manchester :confused3?), but while that airport may not be well-stocked, Logan absolutely is. They sell juice and everything once you get through security :teeth: After reading At World's End's experience, it just seems to make SO much more sense to not bother bringing drinks through security. I'm sure Manchester has shops or kiosks or at least vending machines.

THAT is an awesome idea!!! I have a small stash of kool-aid fun fizzes and the kids love them. We are also huge water drinkers (I buy the 17oz bottles by the case) and always have empties!! You're a genius! :3dglasses

Yeah, Manchester LOL!!! They actually don't have much in the way of retail after security (although to be honest I have never really wandered the terminal... we live 5 minutes up the street from the airport, and security is SO fast there, so we really take advantage of being able to leave the house at the latest minute so we don't have to hang around waiting too long!)
