No luggage tags for Internation guest BOO

Have been told by Disney that as we are international guests they wil not post luggage tags to us so we wil have to collect luggage ourselves and take on ME Bus. We are arriving on a domestic flight. Why can"t they post the luggage takes to Australia? a bit disappointing .. I would glady pay for the postage

This is because at the Orlando airport the DME luggage gets separated out as if it was going to a certain luggage carousel. Since you are flying international your luggage goes to the Customs carousel and is already out of the luggage sytem.

It is unfortunate but that is just how it works.

Even though you are arriving on a domestic flight, it sounds like you don't clear customs until you get to Orlando. If that is the case, that's why they won't handle your bags. And it's not even that the won't, they can't.

They would HAVE to clear customs at the FIRST stop in the USA, not the final destination. If it's a domestic flight, it's just that...domestic. They would have already gone through customs at what's called an "FIS" or "Federal Inspection Station". The flight from that airport to Orlando would indeed be a domestic flight. The problem is, in fact, that DME won't send a yellow tag internationally. However, what the OP can do is:

once in Orlando, give the DME people the luggage claim tag and a GOOD description of their baggage and then it WILL be transported to the hotel.

That's strange (and annoying ). I have had friends receive luggage tags in Australia. Pop over to the Aussie board and see if anybody else has. I use a TA in the USA, so she is sending our packet to our hotel in New York at our request, but they (TA's) will send them to Australia also.

Just a little useless piece of information to follow No flights from Australia clear customs in Orlando. Most are cleared in LAX (although not all, SFO and HNL are another couple of places we clear customs), so we then travel on domestic flights throughout the USA just the same as USA residents so our luggage is classed as domestic not international. Even on a flight from Sydney to New York, one flight number, we still clear customs at LAX so the LAX/NY portion of the flight is classed as domestic even though it is operated by Qantas and is a continuation from Sydney

No matter we will just collect luggage ourselves and proceed to Disney transport. (Yeah we could give Disney the claim tickets and a a descreption of the bags but I could not be bothered. the bags could be left on the carousel for ages until they collect.

First United cancel our 10.30 pm flight for direct service to orlando arriving at 0630 am *now arriving at 0930 am on non direct flight... and now no luggage collection. BOO !!!

I got a FANTASTIC fare on the NY/LA roundtrip portion of a Qantas flight one time less than half of the fare on any domestic carrier, but it was last minute we want to fill this plane type of fare.

By the way, even if international guests ARE clearing customs in Orlando, you CAN have DME retrieve and deliver your luggage.

When you get to the international terminal at MCO, you will claim your luggage, then go through customs. After customs there is ANOTHER luggage carousel that you place your luggage on, and it is transported to the main terminal baggage claim for you.

At that point, you can proceed DIRECTLY to DME desk, give them your baggage claim tickets and they will claim your bags for you and have them transported to your resort.

What's so hard about giving someone your luggage tags? Many people stateside don't get luggage tags because of timing, misdirected mail, etc. They still get their luggage.

How safe is leaving your luggage on a carousel hoping some one does not steal it whist you get Disney to collect> ... it may take quite a while to collect.

May be its different in the USA but here in Australia no one checks your luggage tags to match them on your luggage. You simply pick up your bag and walk out of the airport. (easy to steal) May be in the USA you have security staff to cross reference the luggage tags on the bags with the ones in your possesiom. If that is true maybe we will just go to the Disney Counter and give them the tags to collect.

Well, it's the same way in the USA. Yes you are right, anyone could grab any bag off the carousel regardless of ownership.

However, having said that, theft is not a widespread issue because usually, there is nothing valuable in checked luggage.

You should have your valuable stuff in your carryon such as electronics, medication, jewelry.

Yes, I know the cost of an entire holiday's worth of clothing and shoes can add up, but there have been NO widespread reports of checked luggage theft at MCO.

Also, since you clear customs in LAX, then there is a VERY good chance that you will get down to DME and hand the agent your luggage tags WELL before they even reach the carousel, so there is a good chance that the DME person will be looking for your luggage as it rolls off the carousel. I think it is done by radio. The few times I have traveled to Orlando for busines and not Disney, I have observed that there is a DME person at the carousel(s) with a clipboard and radio. They grab bags off of almost every flight as they roll off.

(I had a bag delayed on a busines trip on two occasions and got to spend about over an hour on each occasion watching the baggage carousels.)

Any luggage with Magical Express tags should not come out on the carousel because it's taken by the Magical Express employees in back.

The OP will not have luggage tags, because they are from overseas. Disney doesn't send out DME packages overseas.

True, DME tags are no longer shipped anywhere else than the USA. This has been in place since beginning of 2009.

If you value them SO much; book through a US TA. Since they'll 'own' the ressie, the DME tags will be shipped to them, who in return ship them to you anywhere in the world.

Don't value it THAT much? Other options are taking along your own luggage or handing over the luggage stubs to DME.

Risk? Sure, but then again; it's ALL a risk. Same thing when your luggage hits the luggagebelt at your home airport. Before you get it, somebody else might've taken it already. Even without DME-tags, Disney is pretty good at getting the luggage back to the resort rather quickly.

It's one of those things we have to deal with when not living in the US. It's not that bad, IMHO. For references; I've used the DME tags in the past and valued the service, being somebody that loves to travel alone and not being able to handle luggage myself because of a disability. Last year we did half/half (some tags arrived because we used a US TA, others got stranded), this year we're doing without. There are worse things. If you don't want to or aren't able, no need to lift a bag with or without DME tags.

Although I'm sure theft at the baggage carousel happens, it's not that prevelant or frequent. Baggage often is left on the carousel due to passengers missing connections (or baggage being redirected) and they are pulled by airline employees.

Thanks for all replies We will collect ourselves and take to Disney desk. We arrive at 1100 am so should be in the park by 1.30 pm. We have a full 5 days there after that so should have enough time. (We originally booked to land at MCO at 6.30 am but United cancelled (Had planned to be in MK by 0930 am. Thats life we are still getting free dining 5 full days at WDW and 2 at Universal(harry Potter) and 3 nights at Vegas so looking forward to seeing you folks. We got a great deal off disney.. ( still do not know why they do not post tags internationally) Shut up greg !! I hear you say.

They used to and now they don't. I imagine they figured that there were too many tags getting lost and having to be re-sent, which doubles the cost for each lost package, or maybe even just sending them and having them get there perfectly was too expensive and they needed to lower costs.

The ones getting them sent to them are booking through US travel agencies. Of course that means different, possibly higher, prices. I know that some countries get fabulous deals on passes that cannot be gotten in the States (at Disneyland, the longest ticket you can get is 6 days in the states, but Australian visitors can buy 14 day passes for less than an AP!), and they might have to deal with exchange rates that might not come into play if using an in-country travel agency. You have to weight the pros and cons for each trip.
