Bubble-wrapped stuff in carryon???

Have to get some bone china cups/saucers to Florida. So, I've nicely wrapped them in tissue paper and bubble wrap and want to carry them in my carryon bag. They are almost antiques so don't want to put them in the checked bags. Should I be okay with that, going through security?? I can't think of a reason I wouldn't be, but figured I would check here to see if anyone had had any experiences with it.

No, but I would bring extra wrapping supplies - especially tape, if you used any - in case you need to unwrap anything . Also, if the china is in some type of container - box, Tupperware, etc. - I would pad the inside of that with a couple of layers of bubble wrap, and don't forget the top/lid.

Thanks....good idea. I'll bring addtl tape..just in case. I can't imagine that they'll have an issue since it will be pretty obvious what is wrapped when they see it on their screens!!!

You never can tell what will get a TSA agent's knickers in a knot! I had a tinker bell keyring once that got everyone buzzing. Apparently her pixie wing looked like a knife. sigh!

I was flying on 911 and continue to feel they can do anything - take as long as neede - to keep us safe....but then I arrive at the airport VERY early to avoid stress.

You will not have a problem with the bone china. We brought so many carry-ons down with collectibles over the years (an entire room full)
TSA is so used to seeing these items in carry-ons, especially going into Florida.

Keychains are the worst, especially the large Disney keychains, I always took them and put them right into the bin, no questions asked.

This has nothing to do with security, but another thing you can use to physically protect the china, in addition to all the wrapping you're doing, is to cover any edges with masking tape or painter's tape, painter's tape preferred since it won't peel anything off except itself when removed.

Doing this can dampen even the most persistent, but minute, vibrations that can occur while travelling, preventing small chips, etc. along the edges.

Thanks everyone...feeling much better now. Yep, they are packed very well...it's what I do for a living, sort of anyway.
I know that when I was bringing my ds his coin collection down a year or so ago, you would have thought I had explosives in my bag. The bag stopped at the end of the belt, the TSA agent, a woman, looked at me and asked what was in the bag. A coin collection I told her, and started to remove it to show her. She want nuts...'Mam..step away from the bag please, step away. I will take it out...please, step away, now!' Sheesh.
And then there was the time I completely forgot my roll of quarters for the laundry. Man, the agent ended up emptying my entire carryon before we found it. I had completely forgotten about it being in there. And it slipped into a torn area, within the side of the bag. Only sort of embarrassing!!!
Or the birthday cake incident....had 3/4 of a huge GF cake in my carryon. No way was I leaving that behind..I had paid over $100 for it for my dd's 13th birthday the day before. They packed it up very nicely, and it fit perfectly in my carryon bag. That bag went through the xray area, it stopped, backed up, through again...repeated this about 5 times. The TSA agent yelled over to the agent in the adjoining area....'Hey, come over here..you gotta see this!' They asked me if I had a wheel of cheese in there!! Nope, just a birthday cake...they howled with laughter.

Nope...don't want to repeat any of those incidents on Saturday!!!

I found out after we got home (two cross country flights later) that it had gotten unscrewed, so there was the part with the lightbulb attached to the keyring, and the other part was floating free...looked JUST like a bullet. They never noticed it. Flipped out about DH's batteries, but the "bullet" in my backpack, meh who cares?


goofy4tink don't you wish there was some way they could let you help??? They put DH's bag through three times b/c of the batteries, only finally looking at the zipper compartment where we were telling her to look.

I have an MP3 player that is not an ipod, and is a funky shape. Again, 3 times through with me saying "it's my MP3 player, it's in x pocket", but they refused to listen to me. (I was saying it sweetly, not rudely, we almost always give ourselves plenty of time to get through security)

I guess they're afraid that we're directing them to open a pocket full of anthrax or something but there's got to be SOME way other than blatantly ignoring what we're telling them....

I had that happen with my roll of quarters for tolls and laundry, too! *LOL* I had tucked into an exterior side pocket of my carry-on (laptop) bag, and the TSA agent was concerned it was the barrel of a gun!

I told him it was a roll of quarters and he was welcome to open to pocket, or I would, if he preferred!

If you have an item that always draws inspection, then keep it in the outside pocket and then just before putting your bags on the belt take out the offending item and put it in a small bin all by itself. I carry a TSA approved corkscrew and about 1 and 5 times a TSA agent would want to re-run my bag. I finally got tired of waiting for it that now I know to put it in a coin bin by itself. It comes out the other side and the agents hand inspect it quickly, but I am on my way.

Hey, I do know how to pack for security. I packed that stupid coin collection just as I should have. I fully expected it to be inspected...just didn't expect the shrill 'step back from the bag' comment....
And I guess I should have remembered the stupid roll of quarters. Won't make that mistake again. Any rolled coins go in my baggie of electronics stuff. Yeah...I know..I don't need to take out that stuff or pack it in a baggie. But, on the off chance that someone wants to see it, I can just pull that gallon baggie out of my carryon.

There is a list of what you can and cannot bring aboard an aircraft on the TSA.GOV website.
I realize that some TSA agents can be very dramatic, however, your safety and the safety of others is their main objective.

Absolutely!!! And that is why I asked the question. I just don't want to get any of the TSA agents in a tizzy over china cups and saucers.
I'm already checking a bag with bubblewrapped artwork in it...add the peanut butter and the strawberry jam to that bag and I'm pretty sure that one will be getting checked out!!
