Carry on bag length?

Airtran allows carry ons that are 24" or less in length. I have a suitcase on rollers, the suitcase part is less than 23 inches but if you include the "rollers" in the measurement, it looks like it is longer than 24" but less than 24.5".

The width & height are way under the max so the overall dimension is under the max. Will I be able to carry this on? Thanks!

Yes, but the length is important because you are supposed to put suitcases in the overheads wheels in. If your suitcase is too long, the door won't shut.

Had not thought of that. I think it would fit in if the length were sideways in the overhead, but if I had to put it in with the length facing out maybe not. I was compensating for a curved top & bottom roller which put it right at 24 inches, maybe a half inch more. Hmm, well I'm not sure what I'll do then

For those of you who fly frequently (we don't) , is it hard to get space in the overheads now with the checked bag fees? If we are using up the whole isle under the seat wouldn't that be "our" overhead space?

Weeellllll, it's 'sorta' your space. But, you may find other bags in it by the time you board.
Yes, the overheads are now much more full, especially on Delta due to no free checked bags. I would go in, hoping that there was enough space for your bag to fit in sideways, if it doesn't fit in wheels first. BUT.....if there isn't enough room for bags to fit in wheels first due to your bag being in sideways, then you may be asked to gate check your bag. Will that happen? Probably not...just putting it out there for info's sake.

Many people are now bringing on carryon bags that stretch the posted limits...and some of these bags are waaaaay oversize. I watched one woman try to stuff her way too big bag into the overhead bin...she finally had to stand up on a seat, to get extra leverage, and shove it in...took about 8 tries. You should have seen her trying to get it out at the end of the trip. It was actually pretty funny.

I decided not to chance it, I remeasured the bag standing it upright on a hard floor, placed a level item on top & the exact length = 25 & 1/8 inches

I borrowed my mom's carry on bag. It looks practically the same but measuring it the same way the exact length = 24 inches long

Now all I have to hope for is that the space above our isle IS available! I love going to WDW but it's getting rather hilarious to not only have to jockey for position for a FP to TSM but now you have to jockey for overhead baggage space on the flight down

Yes, the overheads are now much more full, especially on Delta due to no free checked bags.

And on AirTran, and American, and Continental, and USAir, and United...pretty much everybody has fees now except JetBlue and Southwest.
