Broadway Shows and TV show tapings in New York

Has anybody done any Broadway shows in New York? I am looking at Wicked but was wondering if there are any other good ones that an 11 year old boy would enjoy?

Also has anybody been to any TV show tapings? Was it hard to get tickets? I am going to try to get tickets to the Martha Stewart show and don't know how hard it is to get tickets.

Any recommendations?

We saw Mary Poppins on Broadway and it was great. My kids loved it as it is one of our favourite movies.

I saw Wicked in Sydney and it is amazing. Can only imagine how great it would be on Broadway.

I'd like to know about getting tickets for tv shows too. Hopefully someone can chime in.

I've been checking Martha every day for weeks I know I know, it says August, but just incase they are released earlier I don't want to miss out. Not that it's 100% anyway that filling in the form will get you tickets but I really want to see a Martha show. I watch it in the afternoons on GO sometimes and I think, I am going to see your show, I'm going to see your show

Lion King and Mary Poppins were on my list as well as the Addams Family (I used to love that show ) but the Addams Family hasn't been getting such great reviews and I really would love to see Mary Poppins too. I showed them all to my son and Wicked seems to be the one that would interest him the most, mind you all he really wants to do in NY is go to Toys r us, FAO Schwarz and the museum from the Night at the Museum movie

We saw the a taping of the Martha Stewart show when we were in NY in April. I applied online, you had to justify why you would like to go to see the show taped (this may have had to be done for each person). All four of us got tickets, it was interesting - though with all the cameras around we mainly watched the show on the screens above. The show we went to was 'live', we were invited to stay and watch a taping in the afternoon but we had an appointment at American Girl. You can read my Watching Martha blog (there are also other NY days blogged, WDW days are still sitting in draft).

ETA: The show was moving to the Hallmark chanel so not sure if that would change taping information.

We saw Mary Poppins, and apart from our seats being smaller than our seats on the airplane it was Amazing. If you are going definitely get seats in the front of the mezzanine level on the right hand side.

I will also post on the NY board - may not be tonight though.

Wow, thanks for that, your blog is fantastic! I do hope that we get tickets to Martha, I am still checking online every couple of days even though it say's to come back in August for tickets, I don't want them releasing them early and missing out. Not that it's a sure thing anyway but I want to give it a go. We will wear bright clothing Great reading about that. I'm getting excited now

I received an email to confirm we had tickets - the email came on the 19th March for the show on the 8th April. I had about 5 days to RSVP, the RSVP had to include an answer to two questions from each guest:
1. When it comes to cooking, crafting or gardening- is there a skill or technique you would like to master with Martha’s help? (From the most simple to advanced)
2. Are you a crafter? Briefly tell us about your unique talent.
I did use our hotel address in my initial request, but as you had to write a blurb I put in that we were visiting from Australia (in the audience there was also a group from Canada and a girl from Germany). I think I applied for the tickets at the end of February. They released a week of tickets at a time, so I knew when our 'time-slot' was opening.
You can purchase Martha merchandise at the taping. It was a fun experience - the warm up guy was great.

Another vote for Mary Poppins, it was absolutely brilliant.My kids loved it. I also took my daughter to see Mamma Mia which we loved but I'm not sure about that one for an 11 year old boy. I saw Wicked in Melbourne and adored it, I'm sure it's amazing on Broadway.

We didn't try for any tv shows in NYC as I'd researched tons of them in Hollywood and the age limit for most was 14 years. Even the Disney Channel shows had a minimum age of 12 (my kids are all 10 and under) so it didn't even occur to me to look into it for NYC.

Great, thanks for that, it sounds so exciting. I just had a chuckle at the questions. I will be taking my 11 year old son to Martha and was thinking about the first question about Martha's help. For his response I would probably have to say "no because my Mum has dragged me along with her".

Is Joey the warm up guy? I have seen him on here show all the time. I really hope that I get tickets, I would love to go.

Thanks for your reply I would love Mary Poppins too. I wish we were in NY a little longer so we had time for more than one Broadway show but I think one will be all we can get too.

I think most of the shows in NY have higher age limits for kids, but Martha is 10 I believe and my DS will be 11 so he will be able to come. And I love the Martha Stewart show so I will be so excited if we can get tickets

Well I just did my usual daily check and I could request tickets.

So now fingers crossed that we get an email in a few weeks to say we have tickets.

Good luck with your tickets! Have been to a few tapings, be prepared for it to take a long, long time.... you have to do a lot of waiting around before you get marshalled in.

Also, note that some shows overbook their audiences to cover the inevitable no-shows, so they'll still get a full audience seated for the cameras. A ticket doesn't guarantee a seat, if you miss out they'll take you into an overflow area where you can watch the tapings via monitors. Not quite the same but it's still okay.

An alternative if you can't get in to the actual taping is to ask to try and get into a rehearsal - again, not quite the same but you get to see the celebrities in the flesh. Rehearsals are sometimes held in the afternoon before the taping in the evening (as an example).

Only take the very bare minimum stuff with you to the studio - nothing that would be construed as a weapon, no cameras, no video cameras, turn your phone off etc etc. If you're seeing the type of show where they include shots of the audience on camera, don't wear t-shirts or sweatshirts that have any obvious "advertising" or endorsements on them - they may make you remove it if you can and if you can't they won't let you in. They also refused entry to a woman who had a bad cold and was coughing and coughing.

Make sure you have photo ID on you as well! They're very security conscious.

Some shows like David Letterman and The View had standby tickets available actually on the day of taping - it's worthwhile when you actually get to New York to check up on it.

A fun show to see taped, if you can, is Saturday Night Live.

As the other posters have said, if you have a child with you, make sure the child can get in to the taping. Age requirements will vary from studio to studio.

If all else fails, get down to The Rock early in the mornings and get on The Today Show.


PS: Take a jumper with you - the studios, especially the waiting areas are really cold, even in summer. They have to offset the heat of the lights and equipment and it gets freezing.

[Busy Busy]

DH took me to New York for my first visit in 2003. He is English and had been 5 times before we met (5 hour flight from London - much easier than from Sydney!!), so on our trip he made sure that we did all of the things that I wanted to do.

One of my favourite shows was (still is) Late Night with Conan O'Brien (I have a thing for tall men!!) DH called the number in the credits of the show and we were in!

We had to wait in line for almost 2 hours just inside 30 Rockerfeller Centre, then we were screened and taken up to the studio where we waited another hour! Then Conan came out and said hello to everybody - he was hilarious and everybody was bouncing with excitement!

It was a fabulous show, he had all 3 Charlie's Angels on (second movie had just been released) and had all of us in stitches for the whole hour. At one stage he came up into the audience and we could see ourselves on the monitor, then at the end the camera swept over the audience and we all clapped and waved. I left on such a high, we went for a drink afterwards - mainly to calm me down!!

The best bit was when my brother called us early the next morning to say that he had just seen us on Conan!! It was a great experience!
