Chapter One: On the Road

Wow! The day has finally arrived. We are ready to hit the road to the House of Mouse. I have been counting the days and planning … and driving my friends and family nuts … for more than a year now.

IMGP5023a-1.jpg

It’s 8 a.m. The car is packed, all the electronics are unplugged or on timers, the outside water and gas is turned off, the kitties are all ready for the sitter and we are on our way. One quick stop at the corner gas station to top off and pick up a bag of ice for the coolers and then we hit I-95.

Now, anyone in the DC area knows that, no matter what time of morning you hit the road, you are going to hit rush hour traffic. And so we did … just 30 minutes into the 15 hour drive. While we sit in traffic, let me take the time to introduce the DH and I. I am Jane, a 20-year Army retiree who has spent the past 10 years working for a nonprofit affordable housing organization. I am turning 25 this year (for the second time) and have been told I am a bit crazy … in a fun way, that is. I am a bit on the Pooh-sized side which, I guess comes from going all out in the Army for so many years and then suddenly becoming an avid couch potato. But I vowed when I retired in 1998 that I would never again run, ever … unless I am being chased. And then it would depend on who is chasing me. Honey, if it is Dwayne Johnson, I will run … towards him!

Anyway, I think I had better make intros to DH. His name is Leo and he is very good at putting up with me. And even though he spent most of his adult life as a professional musician in various bands (which explains why I have to YELL AND REPEAT MYSELF ALL THE TIME), he is actually pretty shy, even though it will be hard to tell in this trip report because he LOVES to have his photo taken and can be a bit goofy. The photos will be almost like Where’s Waldo.

luaua2a.jpg
[/IMG]

This photo is probably the only one of me in the entire TR. I much prefer to be behind the camera and am content with Leo being in front of it. This was taken just before going into the luau.

Anyway, back to the road. Even though the traffic is steadily moving, it is moving slow and Leo is now getting into his PPP mode (peepee panicked). Believe me, when he has to go, he HAS to go. Now, for some reason, he just won’t stop until he gets to a rest area. He just keeps passing exit after exit getting more and more panicked and frustrated. And when that happens, he starts driving like a lunatic. Now, he’s freaking out in the driver’s seat and I am freaking out in the passenger seat yelling at him to stop ANYWHERE. I really would love to make it to Disney in one piece.

Finally, 75 exits later (yah, I am exaggerating), we come across a rest area just south of DC. Blessed relief … for everyone on the road.

My turn behind the wheel while hubby takes a nap. Ah, peace at last. I pop in my book on CD, Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz, and settle in. An hour later Leo wakes up and asks, “so, what’s the tape about?” Have you ever tried to explain an hour’s worth of Dean Koontz to someone who has no idea what’s going on? I turned it off and said, “nothing.”

After a quick stop a couple hours down the line, we switch up again and Leo is once again behind the wheel. But at least now we are not in the city where PPP mode would be a problem.

IMGP5030a.jpg

After a quick lunch stop at a Waffle House, we stopped to top off. While Leo is taking care of the gas, I go in for some snacks. Mind you, I leave my Pentax camera on the front seat because he is right there. When I come out, I find that he has left the car in a parking space, key in the ignition, engine running and my camera sitting in plain sight … with the windows down! They say the mind is the first to go…

Anyway, back on the road and we start seeing the ever popular South of the Border signs. A sure sign we are on our way south. For as many times as we have passed this place (on the border of North and South Carolina), we have never stopped. And this was no exception. No time to waste. Mickey is waiting, after all.

IMGP6856a.jpg

After passing SOTB, the road is pretty quiet and boring and, after about 600 miles, we decide to stop for the night in Port Wentworth, Ga. We choose a Quality Inn and it looks pretty nice … from the outside. Boy, were we wrong.

IMGP5033a.jpg

When we got to our room, it was pretty skuzzy. It looked clean at first glance, but then when we got to looking around, eeewwwww. The grout in the bathroom floor was black, the telephone was sticky grungy and the sheets were actually stained like someone dribbled coffee on them. And then when I called down for clean sheets, I had to go to the front desk to get them. And when we were trying to get in the side door (closest to our room), we were trying to use our room key. One of the several men milling around the door smoking told us to, “just pull hard, you don’t need the key.” Makes me feel safe.

This is the second or third time we have stayed in a Quality Inn and have been less than pleased each time. No more QI for us … Comfort Inns all the way. Now, I know they are technically owned by the same company, but they are like night and day. Just happy I travel with Lysol spray and wipes.

Anyway, Leo was concerned he would not be able to sleep. But, by the tme I got out of the shower, he was snoring and continued to snore all night. At least one of us got some sleep. I was up every hour.

Early morning and time to hit I-95 again for the last five hours of our drive. I always forget how humid it is in the south. That Georgia humidity hit us like a brick. But, all packed up and ready to go, we are on the road again.

Aaaahhhh, there they are!!! Palm trees!

IMGP5044a.jpg

After a few hours, it was my PPP mode turn. After an hour of holding on, I was begging to stop somewhere … anywhere. But then we hit a section of road that was very bumpy. Have you ever had to pee really bad and then been bounced around for another 30 minutes? Not a pretty sight, but it was pretty funny. Of course, having to pee really bad, being on a very bumpy road and then laughing hysterically is not a good mix. FINALLY, we stop. Wheeeeeewwwwwww…

At 1 p.m., we saw it. There it was in all its glory. The Welcome to Walt Disney World! sign.

IMGP5063a.jpg

Even though we were about two hours early for check in at our hotel, Shades of Green, we thought we would just stop in and see if our room was ready. It was!!! And what a room it is! As usual, the room is perfect in every way. Plus, the location is just steps away from both the lobby and the parking garage as well as overlooking the pond where I can listen to my froggies chirping at night.

After checking in, getting settled in and buying our park tickets, we went looking for the outlet malls and then went to Magic Kingdom to catch the evening parade and fireworks. Great way to start our vacation. The following are photos of both the hotel and the parade.

Next installment, day one in the parks.

Where is Shades of Green located on Disney Property. I hear so many people mention it, but I have never seen a sign for the place.

On your first picture, you have your street address showing. I don't know if you want to blur it out somewho, but with privacy issues, some people freak out about things like that.

Looking forward to reading more.

Glad I caught your report right from the start. I love Shades of Green and am looking foward to our trip in August. Great report so far. I can't wait to read more.

Shades of Green is a military hotel located across the street fromthe Polynesian.

Thanks for the address tip. I will try to blur it ... or just delete it.

I've been looking forward to your trip (AND trip report) for almost as long as you have! Since my family can't go back "home" until next year, I've loved living vicariously through your planning, anticipation and excitement. Your trip report has not disappointed me thus far and as wonderful as your pictures are (yes, I've seen all of them!), I expect it to just get better (AND funnier!).

I just looked back at old e-mails and can't believe we have been Disboards, then Facebook friends for less than one year. Our mutual love of all things Disney makes it feel like we've always been friends!!

I'm here from the SOG thread. Great start! :thumbsup2 Looking forward to the rest of your report! :cheer2:

I feel the same. I guess some people just click. It's been great fun being an unmet friend. :yay:

Im subbing too - from the SoG thread - can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

Hi Jusero, I am enjoying your TR so far, you have made me laugh with some of your DH stories. Love the PPP mode, seems like you and I have some things in common with our DH's. :rotfl: Have to keep this in mind when my DH has this issue next. Just imagine his face when I tell him he is having PPP mode????? :lmao:

Love the picture of your house on departure day, great with the sun rising in the picture. Said out loud to me " Even our house is wishing us a magical Disney vacation."

Where did you watch SM parade? The pictures are Great, would love to just have that view for our next trip. We alway end up behind rows of people even getting here 90 minutes before the start.

Well, I have my fastpass in hand and ready to ride with you on this trip.:goodvibes

Joining in and laughing :lmao: along the way. My DH is getting that way when he has to go we must stop, but he will stop along the road he has no shame.

We watched the parade from Frontierland on our first night. We got there just 10 or 15 minutes before parade time and found a great spot ... even though the kid next to me kept squirting me with her mister thingie. Forgot to put that in my report.

That's where we watched SM from, too! Not crowded and DH & DDBF could fade back, sit or even check out the Shootin' Gallery when they got bored with the parade. (How you could ever get bored watching SM is beyond me. DD recorded it for me & even took a shot of me just watching in awe as it passed.) It's the only parade I insist on watching.

Chapter Two: Finally! A full day in the parks!
Even though I was “too excited to sleeeeeeep” as the little boy says in the Disney commercial, I slept like a baby. Shades has the greatest beds. Anyway, up and at ‘em. Since Magic Kingdom opens at 9 a.m. this morning, we are up at 6:30 a.m. Well, I am anyway. Hubby “sleeps in” until I am done in the shower and dressed and ready. Then he gets up and takes his turn while I am taking my morning blood test, eating breakfast and taking my meds.

We are ready to go by 8:30 a.m. and head down to the bus stop on the lower level. We realized it was at least another 30 minutes before the bus leaves … too long for me since I am just about jumping out of my skin to get there. So we decide to head down the road to the Poly to catch the monorail. We could probably be at the park in 30 minutes instead of just getting on the bus. Hmmmm, sit and stare at the waterfall in front of the hotel or get to the front gate of Magic Kingdom and soak in the atmosphere. Tough choice!

Since this is our first day, my feet are still fresh and ready to go and the walk down the road doesn’t phase me. Let’s go! The walk takes about 15 minutes and meanders past a few quiet ponds, then across a sometimes busy road and then through the tropical paradise grounds of the Poly.

aIMGP5183.jpg

aIMGP5185.jpg

We walk under the monorail, through the lobby and up to the Monorail station. Surprisingly, there are only a handful of people waiting. Maybe it’s a good sign of the crowds to come. We can only hope.

We hop on a minute later and off we go. I’m getting pretty giddy right about now and getting more and more excited as I see the castle getting closer and closer. As we pull in and I see people starting to mill around the giant Mickey head in front of the entrance, I know we are finally home!

Now, we usually watch the opening ceremonies from inside the turnstiles so we decided to try watching from outside this time. Of course, it would have been much better if there wasn’t this giant wall of a man who decided to stand up on the wall right in front of us. It really annoys me when people have no consideration for those behind them. If everyone just stays seated, we all could see perfectly. Almost as bad as people putting their kids on their shoulders when they are already towards the front and the kids can see just as well in their arms. If they are in the back, fine, put the kids on your shoulders, but not if you are already towards the front with people behind you. Hey, I am just 5’4” and am already having a hard time seeing around your 6’3” body. Now you add another foot or two on top of that in the form of a kid?

aIMGP5186.jpg

Anyway, that doesn’t dampen my mood for long. I just step to the left and try to shoot around him.

The announcer comes out and begins his welcome. Then it happens. I hear the whistle of the train! Here he comes!!!! My man Mickey pulls in, jumps off the train and starts waving. It was then I realized I had a very large, silly grin on my face and just couldn’t stop smiling. Soon, the streamers are flying and the gates are open.

aIMGP5194.jpg

aIMGP5195.jpg

I just KNOW this wave from Mickey was directed right at me and was for me alone. Well, I can have my fantasy, can’t I?

Fighting the urge to run like the wind, we make our way through the gates. Stopping for just a second to take in the view of “my house,” then it’s on to City Hall. While Leo makes a break to the potty so we don’t have any PPP modes this early in the game, I go to the desk and ask for my very own personalized birthday pin. I pin it to my shirt, grab Leo and we are on our way.

Of course, the first trip down Main Street for us is usually just a blur on our way to Tomorrowland. This year, however, we decided to stop and smell the roses, so to speak. It is still yet to be seen if we can successfully fight the urge to run from place to place like a couple kids. Of course, the 50 years and Pooh-sized butt on me and the 60-plus years on Leo have slowed up down just a bit.

aIMGP5205.jpg

We followed one of the DISboard tips I read about and headed into Adventureland first. It really worked!! It was nearly empty on this side of the park. Of course, the very first thing we head to is Pirates – one of my all time fave rides. If I don’t hit this one (and HM) first, last and several times in between, it is not a legitimate Disney visit for me.

When we got to Pirates, it was nearly empty. We headed in. And using another DIS tip, we went to the right hand lane. For some reason, more people automatically go to the left and, even though there was a short line on the other side, our side was literally walk up and hop on.

IMGP6077.jpg

Dead men tell no tales! The cold blast of air in the face. The smell of chlorine. The thunder and sound of water falling. Davey Jones threatening us. Total darkness. Then, the drop. But since we are all alone on our boat, no one screams. Well, except me screaming, “Yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy!” Then off to Tortuga and the hunt for Capt. Jack and hidden Mickey’s.

Three Jacks and one Mickey later and the ride is done … already.

We hop off, follow Davey Jones’ footprints (one foot and one peg) up the moving walkway … and back around for a second ride. Using the right lane again, we walked up and jumped right on again. After, of course, stopping to listen to the pirates fighting in the cave and the CM yelling, “You swabbies comin’ er what?”

Dead men tell no tales! The cold blast of air in the face. The smell of chlorine. The thunder and sound of water falling. Davey Jones threatening us. Total darkness. Then, the drop. OK, OK, I won’t go through all that again … out loud. But I reserve the right to say it all in my head.

aIMGP5216.jpg

When we left the gift shop again, I headed back for a third ride. Leo just rolled his eyes and bowed out of the third run. He went to watch the Pirates stage show while I ran back up the right lane again. However, it was not a walk up and hop on this time. There were a whopping five people ahead of me.

OK, give me a minute. (thinking through the ride and humming Pirates Life to myself) I’m done now. On with the TR.

After I had my temporary fix of Pirates, we head back towards the Jungle Cruise and ride. How surprising! The tour guide is making really lame, bad puns and one-liners. Didn’t expect that at all. Still a must do ride, though.

IMGP6104.jpg

That done, we head for Frontierland … after, of course, a potty break. I guess being surrounded by all that water – and being spit on by that darned camel – “inspired us.”

At this point, Leo and I split up for a bit. I wanted to look in some of the shops and he wanted to tape some of the street performers that were out and about. While in the candy shop, I tried a sample of these “citrus cookies.” Man oh man were they good! However, being diabetic, it was not advisable to actually buy a box, so the tiny sample had to do.

aIMGP5220.jpg

On down the street I saw a very cool hat in a window display. Since Leo collects baseball hats, I knew he would like this one because I had never seen one like it before. I went back to one of the shops to ask if they knew where I could find it. No one knew what I was talking about. I think they actually thought I was nuts. They aren’t alone.

Anyway, I went back and took a photo so they would know I wasn’t really crazy. At least, not about this. After showing the photo to at least a half dozen CMs, including a couple managers, still no luck. By this time Leo had caught up to me and I took him to the display to show him the hat. I was right, he loved it.

So, off we went to the street vendor that had a bunch of hats to ask them. After showing them the photo and giving them my sob story about how badly we wanted that hat, they could not help either.

We were about to leave when the CM told me I had a phone call coming in and that I couldn’t leave yet. A little puzzled, I move back to the counter and take the phone from her. It was Goofy singing me happy birthday. I was so tickled and moved that I had a lump in my throat. And if you know me, you would know that is a rare occasion.

All day I heard “happy birthday Jane” from CMs and other guests as well. It even surprised me sometimes, especially when they used my name. I forgot I had my pin on sometimes. It was a lot of fun, but nothing beat the phone call from Goofy. Good thing it wasn’t Mickey or I would have probably cried like a little girl!

Anyway, back to the “hunt for the hat.” After asking everyone in every shop in Frontierland, we made it a point to stop in the hat shop on Main Street later in the day on our way out of the park. They didn’t have the hat and could not give us the one in the window display. It seems it is against the rules to give out anything from a window display because it isn’t in perfect condition. Boooo. Oh well, had to ask.

IMGP6045.jpg

Anyway, back to Frontierland. After stopping to take a few photos here and there, we headed to my second fave ride, the Haunted Mansion. Once again, we walk right up and got right in. They were actually getting ready to close the doors when we walked up. I’m loving the lines so far.

IMGP6040.jpg

Of course, as we get up to the front of the line, the Doombuggies stop running for about five minutes. I don’t think it was broken. I think someone with a disability was getting on the ride because when we were in the chamber with the floating head, it stopped again for about the same amount of time. I am so happy that everyone can ride nearly all the rides at Disney, no one gets left out. One of the many things I love so much about Disney.

Anyway, with our hitchhiking ghost in tow, we head into Fantasyland. Of course, Peter Pan is already packed. I really don’t get it. Why, of all the rides, is this one always packed? I ride it when I can, but I refuse to wait in a 60-plus minute line for Peter Pan.

We headed right across the street and jumped into a very short line for It’s a Small World. Now, just by the mere mention of the name, I challenge you to get that tune out of your head in the next 10 minutes. By this time, it’s noon and we get to see the clock strike noon.

aIMGP5228.jpg

It didn’t take but 10 minutes to get on the ride. After the ride, we headed to the Pinocchio Haus for lunch. The crowd levels were so good, even at lunch time (as you can see from the photo), that we had no trouble getting a seat by the window looking down into Small World.

IMGP6001.jpg

We split a pizza meal. I got half the pizza and the salad and the hubby took half the pizza and the dessert … it’s hell being diabetic sometimes! I am saving up all my “sugar points” for my funnel cake. For the food porn people out there:

aIMGP5239.jpg

Sorry I didn’t think to take the photo before the hungry hubby dug in. At least I tagged the dessert before he ravaged it!

aIMGP5240.jpg

We aren’t foodies … even though you wouldn’t know it by looking at me … and we always do counter service meals so we aren’t “wasting time” with sit-down meals. We would rather be wandering around the parks than sitting in a restaurant. We can do that at home. I know, I know … some vehemently disagree, including my daughter who loves the sit-down restaurants. But, that’s us.

IMGP5999.jpg

Once the lunch was scarfed down in mere minutes, we are off on the run again. Well, more of an upper level stroll, really. It’s on to Philharmagic. I think I have more fun in this show watching and listening to those around me who are experiencing it for the first time. Little kids (and big ones too) grabbing at the air when Ariel throws out the jewels. Jumping at the popping champaign bottles. Screaming when we get hit with the water. Saying “mmmmmmm” when the pies roll by. And one lady over my right shoulder who jumped and yipped little a little puppy when we zoomed through Simba’s roaring mouth. Love it!

After a few quick stops on Snow White and Pooh, we headed into Toontown to see about getting a pic with my man Mickey. No such luck. All those people who weren’t in the park and in line at the rides were ALL waiting in line to see Mickey. Sheesh. Not waiting in that line … even for my main man.

On to Tomorrowland and another fave, the people mover. Love this ride! Of course, I have never had much luck taking photos on this ride and it has become a running joke. I always seem to click just right so as to get beams, posts or half of what I am shooting for.

aIMGP5273.jpg

Great view of the Speedway, isn’t it? And as I grimace, growl and say a few choice words, my loving, supportive hubby snickers, giggles and outright hawhaws at me. AT me, mind you, not WITH me. Nearly threw him out of the train in the deep darkness of Space Mountain. Especially since our train stopped moving just as I had that thought.

Naw, didn’t do it. He has the credit cards, after all.

We weren’t stuck too long, but it is pretty darned dark in there. You literally can’t see your hand in front of your face. Or, in my case, the hubby’s, since I bumped my nose on Leo’s hand as he was being a smart butt. Maybe I should rethink my decision. I could just grab the wallet on his way over the edge.

Anyway, those fleeting thoughts gone from my mind, we moved on to ride Buzz Lightyear and the Monsters’ Inc. Laugh Floor. I kicked butt on Buzz, which made me feel a little better … payback, teeheehee. I scored 327,500 points while Leo barely hit 100,000. I have never, and will never, tell him about the secret 100,000 point target. Wink, wink, nod, nod.

Oh yah, and we … big surprise … got stuck in Buzz too! That’s three rides in one day we got stuck on. Unfortunately, we were not able to keep shooting when we got stuck. What a rip.

By this time, it is closing in on 5 p.m. and I wanted to make sure we headed out of MK no later than 6 p.m. so we could make it over to Hollywood to catch the 8:30 p.m. Fantasmic show. I hate that they only hold these shows two days a week now. Well, at least, while we were there. The only other day was Wednesday when we were scheduled to go to Busch Gardens. So it was tonight or miss it … that aint gonna happen.

On our way out, we stopped in several of the shops. I always get one nice souvie per trip. Well, in addition to the tons of other crap we always end up getting. We say every year we aren’t going to buy all that crap, but every single year we end up with lots of crap. Good crap. But crap, nonetheless.

Anyway, I was thinking about getting a Disney watch this year. I found a really cute Mickey watch that actually had the Mickey hands and not the regular watch hands. But I wanted to look around and make sure this was the one I wanted. With a quavering lip, I left the watch and moved on.

We made a quick stop at the hat store to check on Leo’s infamous hat, but no score.

aIMGP5212.jpg

Oh yah – somewhere along the way during the day, Leo got his annual Mickey ice cream as I sit and watch him savor every bite. And you don’t really want to know what I was thinking with each and every bite he took. Of course, he could have eaten the darned thing without all the mmmmmms and yummmmmms!

We said goodnight to “my house” and headed back to the hotel for a brief rest and dinner in the room before moving on the HS. I suggested taking our car since it’s always a hassle – and a very long wait – on the Shades buses to and from HS. I was out voted. And I don’t know how that happens when it’s just the two of us. We took the bus.

IMGP6183.jpg

Off to Hollywood Studios!

We got there about an hour and a half before the show so we wandered around a little in the shops and took a couple silly shots of the silly hubby.

aIMGP5315.jpg

aIMGP5320.jpg

Aaaawwww, I didn’t really kick him to the curb.

About an hour before the show we headed over to the theater to line up. However, the line was all the way out to the street and I got a little nervous that we waited too long and wouldn’t be able to get in. However, I overheard a CM talking to someone behind us. He was telling them that there is no need to wait in the line. Even if the line went all the way down the street, we would still get in.

So we took a chance and went back to wandering around rather than stand in that line of very grumpy, sweaty people with very tired, cranky kids headed into melt-downs.

It was the right decision. We went back about 20 minutes before show time and the line was still at a stand still. We hopped in line and started to people watch. It’s truly amazing how some people act while waiting in line. Now, we all know we are all getting in and that there are no really bad seats, but did that stop the pushing, shoving and line cutters?

Nope!

By the time we all got in and seated, I noticed the theater was not even half full! I hope all those pushers, shovers and line cutters got those great seats all the way up front. You know the ones. The ones where you get wet throughout the entire show?

Of course, the show was phenomenal as usual. And the group of women to my right had obviously never seen it before because they spent the entire show ooooooing and aaaaaaing. That was fun too. Have I been to Disney too many times if I have to live vicariously through the newbies around me?

aIMGP5328.jpg

aIMGP5332.jpg

Now, on the way out after the show, we ended up going through Hollywood Blvd. instead of the back way that we usually leave. Don’t know why, but it was pretty cool. When we got to the end of the street, I veered right towards “Big Blue” (I heard a CM refer to the big hat as Big Blue and I loved it, so I am copying him). I wanted to get a few night time shots of Big Blue. But I nearly got tackled by a security guard telling me the exit was the other way. OK, so he didn’t really nearly tackle me, but it sounded good. I at least got a decent shot with no people. Not even my “where’s Waldo” hubby who always seems to sneak into my shots.

aIMGP5345.jpg

After a long wait for the bus, our first full day in the parks comes to a close. G’night and see you tomorrow!

I'm lovin' this installment of your trip report, Jane!!
Sent the link to DD & asked if she could pick out which part got me "weepy". Bet YOU know. I'm so glad your BD button was magical for YOU, too! Gee, I never got a phone call from anyone special while I was there!
