Please help - the travel agent we booked our disney trip through doesn't do air, so I need to find it on my own, and am a bit overwhelmed. Where to start? Any airlines cheaper than others? What are some tips to getting a good fare?

I'd start by finding a different travel agent. There's a lot of good ones out there that will book your entire trip for you. Personally, I book everything myself, but I'm a control freak.

We have had great luck with Delta on our last few family flights, I book over the phone using their 800#. The staff is always friendly an very helpful and it's been hassle free for us. And I have checked around and they seem to always have the best rates and flight schedule. I've had less luck flying several other airlines with work so I keep going back to Delta.

It is going to depend on what airport your flying out of, what airport your flying in to, the times you wish to travel (both dates and time of day) and whether or not you want direct versus lay overs.

Where I live, the BEST price to get from here to MCO (orlando international) is between $750-$850 (for 4) and will usually ONLY be found on Airtran or Southwest. American will run closer to 1k for 4 and I won't even touch Delta (usually close to $400 per ticket round trip)

From South Jersey you are probably better off flying from Philadelphia.

And what sort of TA can book your land package without being able to book how you get there? I would worry a lot about their overall (lack of) competence.

Our round trip with Delta from Bangor Maine to MCO where $218/person. Cheapest we could get locally where about $500/person.

I use kayak and orbitz to search for the best fares as it gives you a quick summary of what's out there. I also check Southwest and they often have the best fares out of Philadelphia.

But - I always book my flight through the airlines website rather than orbitz or another online TA because I like to have control. Just in case I need to make changes or be notified of changes by the airline. FWIW I have always found the fare to be the same or cheaper on the airline website as it is on orbitz etc.

I was going to have a similar comment to some of the others - I don't think I have ever heard of a TA that couldn't book air. That seems really questionable to me.

I always start with orbitz.com or expedia.com. Then once I have the results I will always go to the airline directly to book. I will also checkout southwest airlines as they aren't on orbitz or expedia. I personally like jetblue as I can get a direct flight out of Buffalo and it is almost always the cheapest flight.

Thanks for the tips everyone. We will be flying out of Philadelphia or Atlantic City, we are about 30 mins from both. I will check Kayak, SouthWest and the other suggestions. Not sure about the TA, they are supposed to be Disney Specialists, but they only do Disney, not air transportation, I agree, odd!!

They can add on air on the Disneytravelagents.com site, I'm not sure why they won't do it for you?
I gladly book air for my clients when they are booking other trip components.

When booking airfare, the first thing we did was decide which airports we would like to fly out of. Then I went to their websites to find out what airlines used those airports. We were very lucky, Jet Blue was our number one choice and flew out of all of our area airports and we were able to find non-stop, affordable flights from each location.

Although, I used Kayak.com and and Farecompare.com to get a feel for prices, I have been advised to book directly with the airline because if you have changes you may have a little more wiggle room than with priceline, et al.

I think the best advice I know of is to ask your friends and family where they fly from and what airlines they use. I have never met anyone unwilling to share their good and bad travel experiences.

Also going PHL to MCO. We just booked Southwest for $100 each way, plus saved $25/roundtrip tix thanks to the Florida special that was posted on the budget board. I have an extra code if you need it--just PM me. It's good for 4 tickets (at least that's what I could do). Tax and everything came to $778 roundtrip for 4. It's the best I could do for the times I wanted.

I'm from south jersey! I fly out of atlantic city airport cause it super close to me rather then paying for parking etc. I'm flying spirit. If you are part of the $9 club they have some $28 flights.
