Is it possible to pack a bottle of alcohol in your luggage when going on a cruise without flying or would they take it away ? Not sure how they check your suitcases.

Disney Cruise Line is the only one that I know of that allows passengers to bring their own alcohol onboard. The rest strictly prohibit it in their cruise contract and yes, they do screen luggage going onboard and remove alcohol if they find it. It will be bagged and tagged and returned to you at the end of the cruise.

I believe carnival allows a bottle of wine per passenger. Not sure what others do. But there are some allowances - check with your cruise carrier. Some people smuggle it on but you have t be much more elaborate than just putting it in the suitcase

We were on Norwegian (NCL) last August and you were allowed to bring wine on board but you had to pay a $15 "corkage fee" per bottle. Once you paid it your bottles were tagged and you were free to bring them with you to dinner, etc. They would even hold them for you in the restaurants to finish at a later time, etc.

In ports some people were buying alcohol but it was checked and I believed held until the cruise ended. Lots of people were picking up their bottles when we arrived back home.

Your cruise line's website should give you the policy and most have the corkage fee for wine.

The answer just depends on which cruise line you are going on. Take a look at cruisecritic.com -- this is a frequent topic of discussion there for each of the cruise lines. Find the forum for the line you are sailing on and do a search or just ask the question.

We went on a Carnival Cruise in March. This was the first time attempting to bring Alcohol onboard (or smuggle). We bought a plastic bottle of vodka and of Malibu Rum. Put them each in a zip lock in case they broke and packed them in with the clothes. We figured if they got taken away then "oh well" but if not, then great. Both bottles made it just fine and it cut down on our bar bill. So, it can be done. But, you also have the chance of them finding it and taking it away - just depends on how they are scanning the luggage.

I was also going to suggest cruisecritic.com. I don't know about alcohol but I have put 12 packs of soda and alot of bottle water in checked in luggage (carnival and royal caribbean) and it has never been confiscated. Cruisecritic many people have said they bring alcohol on in their checked in luggage, as long as it is not alot.

I would suggest just reading the posts on Cruise Critic. Whenever somebody posts an alcohol question they generally get ripped a new one.

Now that I have warned you about CC....I have taken alcohol on HAL, RC, and Princess and never had it taken away. I also brought a box of wine and that wasn't found either. There was a post on CC where somebody was denied boarding for trying to smuggle but I have my doubts.

I am not going to say I agree with it, but if you google it, you can find many ways to get it onboard. Most are not allowable by the cruiseline, but many people do it. My brother took some vodka on by emptying a water bottle and filling it with vodka and putting it back with the other water bottles. Water bottles are allowable. Again, not saying that you should do this, but there are ways.

I've read that on Cruise Critic too. Personally, I don't understand why people need to smuggle on alcohol. They have plenty of it on the ship

My understanding is that listerine is one of the few things they look for. Heck who needs a 24 ounce bottle of Listerine for a 7 day cruise. I have however had good luck with rumrunners. Google them. I wear a denim skirt with oversize pockets and rumrunners in the pockets.

Just remember if you do get caught, that person who catches you is just doing his job. No sense in being nasty to him. I have seen others on cruise critic do ridiculous things like withhold tips because they are so mad their booze was confiscated.

I have to say that cruise critic postings can get very, very nasty. Think line jumping, reusing resort mugs year after year, and pool hopping all in one. That's what you often get.

I don't drink at all,but if I did,I would bring booze on board because the prices of the drinks are atrocious. Sure,there's liquor on board,but they charge way too much money for their drinks.
