44 DISers invade LA! DIS Unplugged/DU Adventures by Disney Backstage Magic! Pictures!

As for Julie, I agree. Her short stature, the fact that she was dressed all in black, her fast pace, and the fact that she wasn't holding up an ABD sign made her VERY difficult to follow.

Jaime also had quite a brisk, take-charge attitude regarding pace, but he always held the sign up high so, even if you couldn't keep up, you could see where you were going.

I found Michael the easiest to follow. His pace was more reasonable, he held the sign high, and he tended to just be more aware of the whereabouts of the group in general.

Joey, although he didn't necessarily lead us, was very knowledgeable and helpful. I loved how he explained the many different combinations of experiences you could get on the Indiana Jones ride by using coins on the table. He also helped me find a "hidden restroom" near the Tiki Birds when that was a necessity! (Those restroom breaks were sometimes few and far between in my opinion - but I'm sure this was made even more difficult by our sheer numbers.)

I'm not finished with this trip report yet. I want to talk about the trip the airport and our return home. Plus, I have some gushy summary type stuff I want to say. I'll try to do that yet this week.

:cloud9:

I'm glad there's more!!! I missed the talk about Indiana Jones...would you mind saying more about that?

I actually walked up in the middle of it, so I didn't get the whole thing either. Basically, he was explaining how there was an almost infinite combination of experiences you could get on Indiana Jones based upon which door you went through, which vehicle you were in, and other things that I don't remember. The vehicle might make different motions, Indy might say different things, etc. He used coins to illustrate this.

I said it on the other thread, Heather, but I'll be thinking of you and your dad. I'm also very glad you've started your trip report. I think it will be a lot of fun to compare each other's experiences. Plus, there need to be more ABD trip reports in general. I remember when we signed up for this trip, I was sad that there were so few good trip reports out there.

Thanks, Dodie! I was noticing that things seemed a little different on Indy from time to time, and I wondered if I just wasn't remembering the details from trip to trip. It's fun to know there are differences.

Dodie thank you for writing this trip report! :)

Up until now I have been unable to get into reading trip reports, due to the fact i find them after they are done. I really enjoyed reading your TR.
I will be reading heather's and Anna's as well.
Can't wait for the mushy ending!:thumbsup2

Monday (4/19):

After breakfast, we learned that we were departing for the airport with several other of our fellow Adventurers. It was very entertaining (and a little worrisome) to watch the driver try to figure out how he was going to fit himself, 8 passengers, and *all* of their luggage into a van that simply wasn’t large enough to handle that kind of load. I was shocked that he managed to do it and, during the entire ride from Disneyland to LAX, I kept expecting the back doors of the van to pop open and for everyone’s luggage to go flying all over the highway.

Once we arrived at LAX, we quickly discovered the ramifications of flying out of LAX on a day when the President of the United States is scheduled to fly in…DOUBLE SECURITY! Twice the time! Twice the “fun.” With the additional scrutiny, TSA was quite perplexed by the bag of Disney pins in my carry on and decided I warranted a “pat down.” (That’s never happened to me before.) Don’t get me wrong – I want them to be very thorough. I was just surprised at the fact that we had to all go through it twice and that TSA at LAX didn’t recognize Disney pins from Disneyland.

Our flight home was uneventful. Our pups and cat were thrilled to see us when we came through the door. Even though I didn’t want it to end – I had to admit that it was good to be home.

And now for the mushy part...

I'd like to dedicate the rest of my closing post to the following wonderful folks who went on this adventure with us: John and Kevin, Pete and Walter, Marilee (Corky441) and DH Dino, Kim (TickledTink33), Anna (Aspen37), Tracey (tmli) and Chris (Slapwhitey), Chris (columnwest), Jason (Menashacorp) and Susan (merriepoppins), Kathy (kab407), Lauren (stenogoddess) and Jeri, Dave (macman752) and DW Sally, Jason (JWren1234), Jennifer (TheTXTaylors5) and Bill (DisneyTaylors), Alissa (SpokaneMom), Katherine (Katscradle) and John (3guysandagal), Lynne (Carolinagal), Tonya (Tonya2426) and DM Carol, Tracy (winotracy)and DH Bill, Karen (Klam chowder), Matthew (MatthewT212) and DH Miguel, John and Micki (tardis1029), Heather (Circusgirl), Jim and Linda, Frank (skunkvette)and Cathy (Mrs. Skunkvette), Oscar Jr. and Oscar Sr., and Sharon (PrincessSharon).

Phillip and I knew all along that this would be a wonderful trip, tossing the words “experience of a lifetime” around quite frequently. We already knew about half of the folks above from the first Podcast Cruise, DIS-a-Palooza, or other DIS meets. My personal DIS BFF, Kathy, was going on the trip! Phillip doesn’t DIS or listen to the podcast, but he’s a Disney fanatic too and he’s always enjoyed the time we’ve spent with other DISers. He, by all means, understood how special it was going to be to get to see and do some of things we were going to experience. These were all obvious reasons to be excited beforehand.

The cost was admittedly steep, but we hoped that Disney would give us our money’s worth and we knew that the DIS and Dreams Unlimited would "up the ante" since it’s been our personal experience that this organization “goes big.”

From the time we arrived to the time we departed, we felt that we were immersed in something really, really special. Partially because of Adventures by Disney and how they handled things, partially because of the special surprises and experiences that we had (both from ABD and from the DIS), but mostly because of all of the people who had come on this “trip of a lifetime” with us. Kevin and John have already talked about it on the podcast briefly, but there was honestly no one in this group of 44 who wasn’t gung-ho, ready for anything, excited to be there, personable, willing to share, generous, and open. There were active board posters and those who are not – but that didn’t matter. No one was excluded. The quieter folks in the group were drawn out. If someone was doing something during the precious little free time we were allotted – everyone was invited and welcomed to join in.

I guess if you spend a week deeply involved in the kind of non-stop itinerary that ABD keeps you on, you are bound to bond with people, but I can’t help but think that this was something more than that. Perhaps it’s because you already have so much in common with others who love Disney enough to invest in something like this?

I feel that I *know* these people that we traveled with now. I mean, really *know* them. When I read their posts, I hear their voices and see their faces. I can’t help but remember little things about them from the trip. :lovestruc

I just know that Phillip and I had the time of our lives and the only thing that made that farewell dinner and the breakfast the following morning easier to take was knowing that we would see most of these people again in December on the Podcast Cruise. If that hadn’t been the case, I honestly think there would have been tears on my part.

If anyone ever comments again about how expensive the ABD trips are, I can honestly answer, “But it’s worth it.” The things we saw. The places we went. The meals we had. The things the guides did. How they went out of their way to make things as good as they could be. The way we were moved from place to place. All of this adds up to an “experience,” not just a “trip.”

Kevin, John, Pete, and Walter – thank you for hosting such a wonderful celebration and, most of all, thank you for taking this wonderful ride right along with us. It was made all the more special because we experienced it with you. :goodvibes

Great report! I feel like I was there.....which I guess I kinda was hu ;)

Great trip report Dodie. It's fun reliving the different adventures, especially from someone else's point of view.

I have to agree that it does help knowing that there is no doubt we will see most if not all these folks again at some point. I found it to be a great bonding experience. I must admit though my eyes did get a little moist at times during the farewell dinner and video presentation. It was just so great seeing everyone having so much fun.

Like you said, it's not a small expenditure doing one of these trips. Seeing what ABD can do and throw in all the great people we got to travel with it was money well spent, completely worth every penny.

Take care,
Chris

:grouphug:

*Dodie - your report is wonderful. It's bringing back so many fond memories, not just of the things we did and places we went, but of the people we did it with.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you see the faces and hear the voices when you read a post on the boards.

I for one can't wait to see all of you again this December on the cruise. I only had a chance to meet a few DISers at DISapalooza last year, but I have my sparkly red Minnie ears all ready to go for this December...:goodvibes

All I can say is thank you. Thank you for sharing what sounds and looks like an amazing experience. There were times during your report I would have thought I was sitting beside you.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in December.

Great trip report Dodie! :goodvibes

So many memories were brought back, even if it was only 2 weeks ago. :lmao:

I can honestly say....worth every penny. :thumbsup2

Looking forward to seeing you and Phillip again in December! :sail::boat:party:

It was sort of weird the last night and at breakfast. I thought I would be sad leaving every one but I was just sad the trip was over since I knew I would be seeing every one in December and on the Boards. It wasn't good bye, it was just so long. :goodvibes

Dodie a wonderful TR!
I am already looking forward to seeing you in December if not before then. :)

I walked Anna down and saw the eight of you off that morning, and I have to say the tears were flowing by the time I got back to our room. John hugged me and said it won't be that long. :grouphug:

So now the planning for December has started! :woohoo::yay:

Great report! :thumbsup2

I was on the same Dec 2008 tour with Melanie (Disneygrl36) and had a blast. But don't get me wrong, you really did get the tour above and beyond what the rest of us got. While I loved the Henson Studios, Walt's Apartment and the Lilly Belle, part of me wistfully had hoped we'd get a peek inside Club 33 and the Disneyland Dreams Suite. And yes, the Disney Archives, too.

So this will spoil you for any other ABD trip by far. ;)

And every group overstays their welcome at WDI /Mickey's of Glendale. :rotfl2:

Fantastic report, Dodie. Sally and I were discussing our upcoming visit to WDW and we both said how lonely it is going to be without our 42 friends to share the fun.

Isn't that the truth!

Thanks for writing this report, Dodie! It is fun to see the trip from all our different perspectives. I feel so lucky to have traveled with this group, and look forward to more Disney adventures in the future!

Heather, your ticker shows that your next visit to DL begins in 14 days. Our next visit to WDW beings the same day (May 14). We will be dining at Trail's End that evening. In honor of you, I will take a picture of the food!

:)

Dodie - thank you so much for your wonderful trip report. Had a blast reading every word. OK - with my trip coming up in August, I said I wouldn't read every word as not to spoil any surprise for myself but dang it - it was just too hard to stop reading. LOL :surfweb:

I know that my trip won't exactly like yours but it was great reading all that you guys got to do. If ever there is a 2nd trip like this I think I've got to be there. :thumbsup2

My trip Backstage Magic tour starts in exactly 100 days!!! :yay:
