Military Uniform on Med Cruises

Would you recommend my brother wearing his military uniform on formal night? We will be on one of the Med cruises and he is uncertain due to the demographic differences and us leaving from a foreign port compared to a Caribbean cruise.

Can't speak for the Med but in 2007 on the Transatlantic DH wore his uniform. He is planning on wearing his uniform this year on the Med cruise.

You might want to have him check with his unit. My DH is not allowed to wear his due to the job he is currently in and going to foreign countries

Each branch/unit/squadron has different rules on that so I would ask first!

I appreciate your sensitivity however I can't tell you how proud I feel when I see our men & women in uniform where ever I am but especially on the ship!

I would encourage him to wear it!

I would see no problem wearing the uniform onboard the ship. The Med cruisers are still mostly going to be US citizens with a slightly higher proportion of Europeans.

I wouldn't recommend wearing it on the streets in any of the ports though.

Europeans in general are less patriotic (than Americans) and in some quarters there is outright hostility to armed forces. For whatever reason there are groups who disagree with Iraq and Afghanistan who think it is ok to blame the service personnel. We've had cases in the UK where troops are parading through their hometown (on return from active duty) and there are anti-war demonstrators who throw stuff at them. Attitudes are different in Europe.

Tunisia is a muslim country so US uniforms may not go down well there.

However, I wouldn't worry on board as it'll still mostly be Americans and everyone is there to enjoy themselves not cause trouble.

Wear it onboard I say.

OP was asking about on formal night not around the cities when in port so yes, why not? go for it.

I love to see people in uniforms and am so proud of our service men and women, (my father and brother both served) but as an American family living overseas (who are friends with MANY different nationalities and who were here during the Bush / Obama election, I can tell you that the whole world is not in love with the USA these days. There definitely is some Anti- American sentiment. Most people seem to blame Bush though, not our military personnel. I am not sure what to advise.

My husband was wondering about this also for our Med cruise. He thought about bringing his mess dress (formal uniform) just for dinner on formal night or at Palo. He definitely wouldn't be wearing it off the ship or anything, but he wasn't sure if he should bring it for dinner.

Bring it for dinner. As orlandothebeagle and I have said above, onboard should be absolutley fine. Your DH is right to be proud to serve and show off his uniform at formal dinner.

Exactly.

While we all are very proud and love to see them in uniform most of the world does not feel the same way.

My DH is active duty Navy and I would love for him to wear his uniform but I understand and respect why he is not allowed to.

We all may think it is absolutely fine, and it very well may be, but it is really up to his command to decide. They are the ones that know the current climate, the current risks, and what might be a threat to him and his family.

Here it is.
Yes it OK to wear on the ship. I do it myself.
Don't wear it off the ship. As a matter of fact service members are advised not to carry any military style backpacks in other countries. Advise is even given that military members should put their military ID in their checked luggage. It is all about not becoming a target.

I don't care what people in Europe think about my country's government, just as I'm sure they don't care what I think about their socialist governments. However, for the safety of US servicemen and women - I agree about keeping a low profile when you're on foreign turf.

Yes - as long as its fine with his command and he obviously doesn't leave the ship with his uniform, etc. I definetly agree with those that say the hostility towards American service members is definetly there abroad.

Sheesh, even before recent times I remember traveling in Europe as a Navy dependent and my father putting his military id in his shoes.

And please thank your brother for his military service!!! I sincerely appreciate all those in the military.

RE the low profile...this is good advice for everyone traveling abroad not just servicemen and woman.

The best advice I have for those traveling abroad is "blend". When you leave the ship, leave your expensive watch in the room safe and wear a cheap Casio watch....and try not to "look" too much like a tourist. Yeah, I know it's hard.
