How do they do the fireworks?

DH and I are debating this. I say they shoot them off the ship. DH says that's too dangerous. Anyone know exactly how they do it?

They do shoot them from the ship. On our cruise a couple of weeks ago they shot them from the area above the front elevators. They did turn the ship so they were facing the correct direction for shooting them as it was rather windy that night. They shot them toward the port (left) side but I don't know if that changes due to wind direction.

sorry but they shoot them from the aft.

nobody can exit from Palo outside to deck 10 on Pirate night

the fireworks are always starboard between the Mickey pool and Goofy pool.

As above, the fireworks are shot from deck 10 aft on the starboard side. They close this area of the ship for a time to set up and shoot. The captain turns the ship to be appropriate to the wind conditions, etc.

They are required to call the Coast Guard before and after the display to notify them that the "flares" are not a distress signal. Trivia...may have changed...but a few years ago, DCL was the only cruise line that had fireworks at sea.

Sorry, the two posts after mine are correct. I got confused when looking at the pictures and got the ends of the ship mixed up. Aft and starboard side it is.

Still appears to be true as the Cruise Director said many, many times during the cruise a couple weeks ago that "Disney Cruise Line is still the only company to have fireworks at sea".

I believe this is still true. It is not the only cruise line you will see fireworks at sea though, as I have noticed more than one time that another cruise ship following on the starboard side 'stealing' a view of our fireworks.

This may sound minor but it’s a major technical difference.

The fireworks are not shot off at all.

Typically fireworks are shot off. On the Disney cruise ships they are blown off with compressed air, a technique that is far safer then shooting.

So if my room is in the rear of the ship on the right hand side (looking towards the front of the ship)on deck 6 will I be able to see the fireworks from my verahdah?

Yes, starboard cabins should be able to see fireworks.

On our cruise in March, our captain moved and turned the ship in order to avoid rain and get the correct wind direction for the fireworks.

Yes, but they will send a letter to your room asking that you do not go out on your balcony during the fireworks or have anything flammable out there during the fireworks for safety issues.

Oh. Well, that kind of stinks! But I understand it and will comply.

My daughter is the kind that needs sleep. I mean really needs it! From the time she could talk she would tell us 'ok, time for bed now' :rotfl: so the fireworks will be way past her bed time. My DH is going to go see them while I stay in the room with her. I thought it would be nice to go out on the verahdah and see them from there.

Yes, that is correct. Because inflammables aren't used to shoot them off is why I believe they got the required permit allowing them to shoot fireworks at all. Still it is very impressive.

You know, we have had balconies on the starboard side on a couple of our cruises and we have never received any such letter. I just recalled that this has been mentioned here before. It didn't matter to us as we like to go up on deck with the crowd to watch the fun.

we were on a cruise and my table mates had worked with the stage director before. So he joins us for dinner a couple nights. One night we got talking about the fire works. Some of the interesting thing about it is they can only bring a very specific fireworks amount on board. They are and will be the only cruise line to shoot fireworks off the ship, because they are the biggest user of fireworks in the world and have some of the best trained firework tech in the world. They have to start a countdown 6 hours in advance of launching the fire works to the coast guard and other ships in the area. They have to have the wind to the aft and starboard part of the ship. That is why the ship may be changing direction a lot during the show. When the start shooting the fireworks the have to announce the launch and explosion of every shell. If one of the shell misfire or exploded to close to the ship they stop the fireworks immediately. Also they are not allowed to bring any firework back to the usa. Then the keep the one that they did not use on castaway cay. They have a fireworks storage cabinet there. If they can not get to castaway cay or the cabinet is full they launch them in the middle of the night unannounced
