Room Requests

We are staying at SSR in a few weeks. We requested a specific area and view. Does anyone know "how" these requests are granted? Does it help to get to the resort early on checkin day or are the rooms predetermined by when they are booked? Any advice would be appreciated!

Requests are not guaranteed, it really depends upon what is available on your check-in day. But they do their best.

The only views/locations that are predetermined at the time of reservation are at those resorts with specific booking categories, like Savannah View, Boardwalk View or Near Hospitality, at AKV, BWV and OKW respectively. SSR has no booking categories.

However, it may be helpful to check-in early, and if there is no room ready for occupancy in your desired area, ask if one will be opening up later that day...and say you'll wait for it.

Rooms are usually assigned the night before check in. Some room assigners seem to really care about their jobs and do the best they can.

Last month at BLT we weren't assigned a room even though we booked months in advance, did on line check in, and arrived at 8:00 AM. The Cast Member at the Front Desk told me that the Friday night crew was lazy and that this happens every Saturday. We had a Bay Lake View that was more of a Contemporary View, but we were told that that was all that was available and that the Management at the Contemporary doesn't allow changes.

Bottom line, your request success depends where, when, and how lucky you are.

We were told the same thing at AKV this past March. We had two rooms booked and were willing to wait later in the day for units closer to each other. (they had us at opposite ends of the hall) The CM said they never change the rooms once they are assigned. :confused3

DVC came out with a system called "room ready" about 5 years ago. Under that system, rooms were not assigned until check-in. When you checked in, they searched for a room that met at least one of your requests and was ready. The idea was by not pre-assigning, more people who arrived before the official check-in time could get into a room immediately. I don't think they ever used it 100%. I know anytime I checked into BWV it was pre-assigned. I think they are using more of a mix now depending on occupancy levels and the resort.

Wow! Sounds to me like Contemporary management has two problems - one with the Friday night crew and one with the CM who is "airing dirty laundry" in front of the customers. IMO, the latter is more serious!

Sad but true. We go to WDW several times per year and we have definitely noticed a change in a lot of the CM's. Last Christmas the CM who checked us in at the BWV was complaining that they had him on a rotational schedule where he worked at a different resort each night. He said that it was because they cut back on the Cast Members to save money. :sad2:
