Cruising on points...

My DH and I are tossing around the idea of booking a final cruise on the Wonder before she heads out West next year. I've never cruised on points, and wanted to ask some of you veterans if there is anything that I need to be aware of before booking. Also, is it possible to book one with points and cash, or does it have to be one or the other (either all cash or all points)? Any tips/advice/info is greatly appreciated!!!

I read that booking a cruise is not the wisest use of points but some day I plan on a cruise and I will be using my points. As far as using points and cash, that can be done and more than likely that is what many probably do since the point requirements can be pretty high. Good Luck!

I've cruised on points. Yes it's not the most cost effective way to do it, but I had the points available and didn't want the hassle of renting my points out. You have to book one passenger fully on points, then the other passenger(s) can be booked either fully on points or fully on cash. You pay DVC's negotiated cash rate, not the current going rate. DVC's rate is usually higher than the current going rate, unless you're booking close to sailing.

I have a question now....can you pay for the adults with points and just cover the kids with cash?

yes you can. Again, you'll pay DVCs negotiated rate.... and if there is a kids sail free deal going on, it doesn't apply to DVC bookings.

Don't forget that you'll also have to come up with the $95 "transfer" fee at the time of booking, and, if you make any changes to the cruise (date, stateroom number or category, adding people, etc.), you will be charged another $95 fee. AND, if you are paying cash for persons in your party, you will have to pay for them at the time of booking with MS. Good luck! :goodvibes

We used points for DH and myself, and paid cash for DD. But don't forget about insurance. You'll have to get that separately.

Not to mention that you can't cancel and get your points back to use at WDW if you change your mind. At least with a cash reservation, you can change your mind right up to final payment and get 100% of your deposit back.

You have to pay one full adult on points and the rest can be either points or cash but you must cover each person in total with one or the other. As noted, the cash amount is different than direct and usually more other than short notice. Plus the value per point is usually no more than around $7.50 per point or less, often less. However, one should look at both options and decide what the specifics are in that situation. Remember if you cancel you don't get DVC points back but reservation points that expire at the end of the UY. You have the $95 fee and ANY changes at all require an additional $95 fee.
