You might consider the other two cruise lines that travel out of Port Canaveral, as well as Disney. You can find transportation to the other cruise lines from Disney. For two adults the
Disney cruise could offer you a false feeling of a cruising vacation. Disney appeals to families with kids and so many good things are kids orientated. The production shows are actual Disney stories and do not provide the dancing entertainment most proffessional shows provide.
The other cruise lines have the casinos and the much better prepared lounges and getaways. There are lounges for older people and the yuppies. Personally I think the food is prepared for kids on the Disney ship as you get potatoes and pancakes shaped as MM and entries that just portray Disney.
There are many kids on the Disney ships. The area for them is small and they tend to spill over into the adult area. Not much but they are there. The Disney ship is small by standards now and actually crowded. 2800 passengers on a 75,000 ton ship compared to one RCLL ship 4100 passengers on a 154,000 ton ship. There are now ships twice and more the size of the Disney ships and you can find a 7 day cruise for about 1/2 as much as you would pay for a Disney cruise.
The Magic and the Wonder are beautiful ships, but so are many of the others. The RCLL I cruised on has a full basketball court, flow-rider which you either surf or boogie board in the water and a rock wall to climb. Disney's private island is nice, but is completely flat. I visited RCCL's private island, Labadee, a few weeks ago and it was beautiful (see the link to some pictures taken at Labadee). Nestled in a bay or cove at the foot of some very tall hills and old ruins it was really beautiful to walk around and sight-see. Also rode the flight line, which is a zip line starting 500 feet up in the mountains, running 2600 feet over the beach to the landing at the beach. What an awesome experience. 45 to 50 mph down the line. The childrens playground was really nice but you had to buy the time for them to enjoy it. The beach, open to everyone, was beautiful.
All the excursions from all the shiops are the same. Some impressive, some not but always crowded. The shopping in the towns is okay. If you like to shop be sure to go to the shopping shows on all ships that give you an idea on where to go. When you get off the boat you will meet 20 million Cheap Charlies who want to take you everywhere in their taxis.
Most of the fun and enjoyment will be on the ship. On the RCLL the Royal Promenade was host to the Dancing in the Street - 70's style, dancing in the street party and the Sea Circus parade (there are some pictures from the parade on the link also. I think children and adults would enjoy that parade as it was really beautiful). The Royal promenade is the length of 1 1/2 football fiels and about 12 yards wide, the width of a small street. There is also ice skating and an ice skating show on the ship RCLL. So pick the ship you think will provide you with the most entertainment for your cruise money.
For families check out the water area for kids. It is twice as big as the Disney area and completely outclasses what Disney has to offer on its ships.
Here are some pictures of my recent cruise!
