How much short notice to book a cruise?

I am asking because we are planning on taking a cruise sometime in 2011. I say sometime because DH is military and we want to take a cruise whenever he gets back from deployment, but we are unsure of when he will get back and when he can take leave. I know that we will get travel insurance if we book a cruise, but we might not know until a couple of days before we take the cruise. Could I book a cruise at the last minute? I also notice that there are some great deals if you wait until last minute, anyone have success doing this?

Sorry I am a first time cruiser and we are so excited to take a Disney cruise. I am new to the boards and have been lurking and learning so much from the guides on this site. I am sure I will have a ton more questions as 2011 is a long time away.

Oh, would you rather take a 7 day Western Carribean or a 4 day bahama on the Dream? ( I know the dream has not come out yet)
TIA!!

I know my first answer is absolutely off topic and not what you asked, but....

To your DH, and all those who are sacrificing for us, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service to our nation. I hope he returns healthy, proud, and ready for a fantastic cruise on Disney---which, if I had my way, would be free for him.

As for your question, vacations to go is showing a 3 day for $299 each (plus some fees, probably comes to $350 each) leaving this Thursday, and a military rate of $714 each (plus a bit) for a 7 day leaving Saturday. Yes, depending on the season and a bit of luck, you can book at the last minute and get some great deals.

I believe you have to book at cruise no less than 3 days in advance. But depending on the time of year, there may not be any offers and it may be very pricey - just depends on availability.
Also, in 2011 the Magic will be in Europe for a few months so a 7 day Carribbean cruise may not be an option for you depending on when you can cruise.
