I'm thinking of taking our own because we need the free dye/perfume kind. Do the washers need regular or he detergent?

Thank u! :goodvibes

I don't recall if dye/scent-free detergents are available for sale on the ship -- I just brought the Purex 3-in-1 sheets (which are now available in dye/scent-free) and found them very convenient.

Actually, the washers themselves are HE, but the detergent that DCL sells is regular. So I'm guessing either will do. I used the detergent DCL sells (Tide) and didn't notice a problem with over sudsing, but yeah, the machines themselves say they are HE.

Oooohhh... that's great to know! I can bring our he detergent from home :thumbsup2

Careful with this. We were on the Magic in September and the lady using the washer next to me used regular Tide - normal machine amount and she had to wash 3 additional times to get the soap out... She gave up at that point... We told one of the cabin attendants, and they came in and ran the washer empty to help get the soap out...

I'm not sure what other choice there is though since Disney itself sells the regular Tide in the vending machine type thing in the laundry room. Everyone that I saw buy the box of Tide also put the entire box into the machine rather than a reduced amount to take into account the HE machine.

They really should replace it with the HE version since that's the type of washers they've put in. Until they do, I suppose the safest thing to do is bring your own HE detergent from home but I really couldn't be bothered to do so since I use liquid detergent at home.

sorry, what's "HE"? I'm usually pretty good at figuring out all the different abbreviations but I just can't figure this one out. :confused3

The person I was speaking of was using a liquid - full amount, not reduced for HE (High Eficiency)... It was a mess.

High Efficiency? What does this mean? Sorry Im not very domestic. I just throw our laundry in the washer, dump in half cap of soap and forget about it. I didnt realise there were different sorts of washers. :confused3

Glad you asked! Wouldn't mind knowing the answer as well. Is that the same as front loader versus a top loader? That's the only 2 main different types of washing powder we have here in Aus.

High-Efficiency Washers
Clean up on savings with high-efficiency clothes washers
Clothes washing machines account for more than 20% of water used inside the home. Running a conventional washing machine can use more than 50 gallons of water per cycle. Today a new technology has emerged to replace water guzzling clothes washers with high-efficiency models that use 50% less water and energy. Most full-sized high-efficiency clothes washers use 18-25 gallons of water per load. These new washers are readily available in retail outlets and are one of the most effective ways to reduce your water usage.

High-efficiency washers have been shown to provide equal if not improved performance compared to high-volume washers. Many high-efficiency washers are front-loading configurations, which use less water and detergent than traditional vertical access models by tumbling clothes in a small pool of water. Using less water in the wash cycle requires up to 50% less energy needed to heat the water and faster spin cycles mean more water is extracted from clothes - thus reducing the amount of time required in the dryer.

In short, if you use enough detergent for 50 gallons of water in an HE washer that uses 20 gallons of water, you get a soapy mess.

Front loader usually takes He detergent because I think it uses a lot less water, hence less sudsing. Some people use reduced amt of regular soap but the washer mfr says not to because it could damage the machine.

Wow... ok, yeah, I can see how this would be a mess. Fortunately, the only ones DCL sells in the laundry room are the powders, so not quite so bad. But yeah, I just can't see ever bringing liquid detergent from home. Especially when I know I can get detergent right there for just $1.
