The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

I just heard from Kathy. She told me to let you all know she jumped on and only had time to update the recipes to the original post. She still is not feeling great and is having some holiday blues like a few of us around here. I let her know we are all here if she needs to talk, but for now I told her to rest up. :grouphug: to Kat.

Trying to catch up...only went back a few pages...hope everyone is doing well. BBL to fill you in on the non-goings on here!

Ann, Good thoughts for Ron and the job. Let us know how Miss Emma makes out at the dr. Time sure is flying right? I don’t think I ever mentioned but loved hearing about Luke’s spelling your last name and trying Grandma and Grandpas!!!

Ann- thank you for letting us know how Kat is doing.

Marisa called and said her surgery is scheduled for noon. She has to be there for 11 AM. Kady is packed for gymnastics so Buddy and I will take her. I do not expect to hear anything until late afternoon, the surgery is supposed to take about two hours.

Welby has her ultrasound on Wednesday morning. If Marisa is feeling okay we will keep Nola. She told me that Brian is ready for the baby now, apparently her hormones are making her "as crazy as a loon" :lmao::lmao: She said she thought she was doing so much better than the last time :rotfl2:Buddy took The Fifth :thumbsup2

when is Welby due? are they finding out the gender?

WFD - Red Beans and rice with grilled andouille sausages.

That sounds really good! You notice I don't give you a hard time about having red beans every Monday anymore... :rolleyes1

I do not know why it has bothered me so much this year, it's really weird.

This post referenced the time change; I am feeling the same way. I've been a little off this year. I just figured it was because I moved south so it FEELS like it should still be early September, yet it's dark like, oh, mid-November.

Ellen, I am a little afraid to ask!!! :rotfl: Recipe please. I know Bethany is going to have a heart attack when she reads this one.

That poor little NC girl's body was found. Prayers for that little innocent angel! This story just made me sick.

Please say a prayer for DH. He is waiting to hear on a new job. He is very unhappy where he is currently working and a change would be great right now.

Hmph! :rotfl2:

:sad2:

I hope he gets good news! Isn't his current job relatively new? It's too bad it's not working out well for him.

Oh I also have to tell y'all about setting my hair on fire!! Yeah:scared1: Yesterday, I picked the rest of my jalapeno & habanero peppers, decided to smoke them on the grill. Well I couldn't get the grill lit, so what stupid thing do I do? Yes stick my head right over the grill to look in, WHUUMMPPFFF..... Aaaaagggghhh! The front of my hair went up, Chris & Alexis were there, Chris runs out & starts hitting at my hair, she had on a black shirt & I see little bits of my hair all over her shirt, then I really freaked out!!! :scared:

It's actually fine & if I didn't point it out no one would know! I washed it & put a ton of conditioner. It's funny now that I know it's okay! :rotfl2:

:scared1: I'm glad you're okay! And your hair too!

:rotfl2: You 2 are so funny. But probaly right, Bethany will have a fit. So before she does I will post it.

:confused3:rotfl: You all think I'll freak out.

Thanks for the update. Kathy, feel better!

Time sure is flying right?

YES. It is. I can't believe we are approaching the end of the decade! I was pondering the other day about everything that went on in the last 10 years. I was thinking I didn't really do much but then I realized it's been quite the ride!

Thanks for all the compliments on the couch and the puppy! :goodvibes And yes, it is VERY comfortable!

Quick fly by...its 1.58 am and I am determind to get to bed before 2 for the first time since WDW.!!

Yeh...I know Bethany, probly " chat to you soon " LOL

Janice - Thanks for card list,my family thanks you too,I usually give out my cards along with pressies on Christmas day but I will have to be sorted this year.

Nancy - Sendin good vibes ower the water for tomorrow.

Love tae you and yours...xx

Pixie dust to add Greg...if it doesn't happen just show up and I am sure they will accommodate.

I hope so...apparently, some people will be storming the place if they don't! Seriously, thank you to everyone who weighed in on this. I think we are going to try to call the restaurant and talk to a manager and see what can be done. I think the CMs on the phone lines have limited power.

Lauren -- I love your new avatar picture.

We had a funeral on Saturday for a family friend.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I spent the weekend having technical difficulties with Hailey's TV/VCR and our printer. And I'm not particularly mechanically inclined nor am I very patient.

I hope everything is better now.

Robin -- I'm glad your daughter handled the services okay.

I went for lunch with Ethan today.

Sounds fun! When Liam was in preschool, I used to be one of the lunch helpers once a week. That 15 minutes seemed like an eternity! Most of the kids would be finished eating after five minutes, and then I had to figure out how to keep them seated and quiet until they could go run around at recess.

Please say a prayer for DH.

Prayers said. I hope Emma does well at her visit tomorrow. I don't blame you for being reluctant to bring her into the office though. Bring a blanket that you can cover her carrier with if there are any sick children in the waiting area. That is what parents with healthy infants did when I brought Caili in with pneumonia. I couldn't blame them.

Where Alexis told her teacher's aide that " No this is not my Maw-Maw & Paw-Paw, this is my Nana & Uncle Bob, they're kind of my fake Grandparents!"
 Alexis is such a character! So cute!

That is pretty scary about setting your hair on fire. I singed my eyebrows and eyelashes once lighting the grill. That was the last time I put my face over it.

Nancy -- I wish Marisa a successful surgery tomorrow, and I hope Buddy gets good test results back. Your Welby story gave me a laugh.

Kathy -- I hope you're feeling better. You've been sick for a while.

Glynis -- Good luck with your painting! I have some painting I would love to get done before the holidays, but the days are flying by so fast, I will be lucky to just get the house cleaned and decorated without adding anything extra!

Maria -- I hope you're feeling better too.

The kids' school was having a fundraiser at a local ice cream shop, so we just got pizza after skating so we could go get some ice cream before they closed.

Now I am going to attempt to get a little Christmas shopping done.

I've been meaning to post this recipe. I made these as an accompaniment to the cheese platter I brought to the dinner Saturday night. They were SO good and super easy. I am definitely making them again for something to have out before Christmas dinner.

Honey Roasted Almonds

2 cups whole raw almonds, skins on
2 tbsp honey
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbsp water
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt

Put almonds on a baking sheet in a single layer and place in a cold oven. Set the oven temp to 350 and bake the almonds for 12-15 minutes...they will be fragrant.

In a skillet, heat the honey, oil and water to boiling over medium heat. Add the roasted almonds and cook, stirring frequently, until the liquid is absorbed. Remove the almonds to a bowl.

Mix the sugar and salt together, and sprinkle over the hot almonds. Stir thoroughly, then put the almonds on a sheet of wax paper to cool.

Ellen - that sounds interesting, thanks for sharing.

Sheryl - fake grandparents! I love it!! I hope your hair is okay!

Nancy - Good luck to Marisa on her surgery. Prayers that all goes well for her and Buddy. Poor Brian, having to deal with hormones. Give him, oh, 10-12 years and he has more than one set of hormones going off :lmao:

Lauren - the brussel sprouts were okay. The recipe Bob used called for them to be cool and I was expecting them to be warm, so that threw me a bit. I'm willing to give them another try, so thats a good thing.

:confused3:rotfl: You all think I'll freak out.

So, Bethany, have you visited the insectarium yet? The guy who runs the place, Zach, he cooks up some mean fried meal worms. The crickets aren't bad either. :lmao:

Bethany- my mind has been nothing but mush lately and I cannot remember if I wished you a Happy Birthday.

So if I did not, Happy Belated Birthday!

You are sooooo wrong! :rotfl: :rotfl:

My soup was good but not as flavorful as I had hoped. I forgot to get the recipes online and just winged it. It may have also been because I used mild Italian sausage rather than hot. Have to tweek it a little.

I sauted onions and garlic, added chicken/turkey (can't remember which) Italian sausage, frozen spinach, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper. Used a carton of chicken broth and a little white wine and simmered for about 15 minutes then added gnocchi. Let it cook another 15 minutes then added some parmesan cheese and half and half.

Tomorrow is another long day. Have to go in early, have to make some phone calls that I couldn't get to today. Then I have the football banquet tomorrow night, dinner will be Italian.

Hi....TigerKat. Awesome information. I am newly married and I even don't alphabets in cooking. Your information helped me a lot and thanks a lot for providing us with this.

Yes to visiting. NO to eating there! There's this fabulous Arby's just down the street. Great architecture too. AND a nice view of the streetcars going past along the palm trees. :rotfl2:

Thank you!

She's not kidding about the insectarium. They really DO serve bugs to eat.

Oh I know.

Bugs are big on the food shows lately.

Alright, wth just happened to my football game?!?!?!?!!?

It's disgusting. And not only do they serve bugs, but the tables have glass lids with bugs crawling around IN the table under your plate. :scared:

What game? I couldn't believe how many teams lost in the final seconds yesterday after the other team came from behind. The Saints were almost among that.

The Ravens-Browns game! It had less then a minute left and all of the sudden it went to the local news!

please keep us posted tomorrow...prayers.

when is Welby due? are they finding out the gender?

She is due in April. They are not going to find out this time although Marisa has instructed them to have the Dr seal the answer in an envelope that is to be handed to her. After all, it is all about Marisa :rotfl2:

I have thawed out a big container of Veggie Chili and will make some bulgar wheat to serve it over. Buddy will probably run through Subway :lmao:

Nancy Wish Marisa and Buddy well for me. I will be thinking about them today.

The bug thing is totally gross. It is making my coffee tast off.:rotfl:
