The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

I have no idea what's for dinner and I don't really care. You all can add me to the list of people bearing bad news. My gram passed unexpectedly last night. She was 90 but there was nothing wrong with her. I just saw her last week when we went trick or treating and she was fine. I'm dreading talking to my mom because I know the tears will really start then.

Oh no, Robin. I'm so sorry

Bethany - Happy birthday!

I have a meeting tonight so I'll be scrounging for something.

Happy Birthday Bethany!!

Can you all stand another long vent from me?

Gail is so upset. Since Chris got out of bootcamp she has not had all her kids home at the same time. This was in 2001. This year both Timmy and Chris will be home for Thanksgiving and she was thrilled. Kim cannot get home until the first week in December when it is a little slower in DL> None of them has ever complained although I know she misses them even more on special days.

In Gail's hospital you must work two out of three Holidays and she had Thanksgiving as one of them. A coworker offered to cover her shift this year. HooRay!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gail thanked her publicly many times and never once did the woman tell her this was not a gift, it was a swap. Her Christmas Holiday for Thanksgiving. She sent Gail an email...yest the coward sent an email message to tell her that she noticed that Gail did not switch Christmas. This would make three Christmas in a row that Gail was on and that means Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. So Gail took her Thanksgiving back but now is working even more hours that week. This is Timmy's leave after Iraq!

Gail would not have asked for the time but this woman offered. She knew that Gail did not realize that she was trying to take her Christmas. Gail said she is always talking about random acts of kindness :headache::headache: I guess that means as long as she is not inconvenienced!

Gail is not giving up Christmas because for some strange twist of fate she will have both boys home then as well :goodvibes

I told her we will change dinnertime so that she gets some sleep and will eat later. That will be a short meal for the kids becasue they need to get back to their Grandmothers but at least she will be able to spend a little time with them.

I ma not a charitable woman and while I told her not to say anything bad on FB I think I am going to post our plans on her wall and let her know how sad I am that she is not going to be able to have a relaxed meal to celebrate the safe return of her youngest son.
I hope that woman chokes on her wishbone!

Oh, this is so sad but I do agree - What goes around comes around. And EVERY dog has her day. There will come a time that this woman will need a favor and I hope she remembers this. I am so sorry for Gail. I just have a feeling something will work out though.

My food for the party last night was a big success. I made the chicken wings in Lauren's Asian marinade, beef satay with peanut sauce (by far, everyone's favorite. It was easy too, so I can post the recipe if anyone is interested), pork potstickers, and vegetable spring rolls. My favorite comment was, "You made all this? I didn't know you could even make this stuff!" I guess she thought I had gone to a Chinese restaurant and ordered takeout.

I would love the recipe for this. It sounds great. I am glad you had a good evening.

My boys sick.

He is full of the cold but no high temp so Im hopin its not the...shhhhh...you know what.

I will keep him off school tomorrow just to be safe.

I hope he is feeling better today.

Well it's official Emily is off to Chicago!!!!!!! Dad has approved!
She has to be in Chicago December 28th! She'll have corporate housing 3 blocks from the theater. Of course, my cousin (her Mom) will go with her first but them my Aunt, DM & myself will be her chaperones......Looks like we may do 2 weeks at a time.

I just knew Dad would come around. This is wonderful news and I know how much you are looking forward to it. I am so happy for you all.

Yes! I'm with you, Ann! I do enjoy the cooking, but spending an entire day cooking, and then being expected to enjoy the meal is asking a bit too much. I decided not to worry about it this year. Dad is coming, and he called and ordered a turkey, fully cooked. We'll pick it up an hour before we eat, and all I have to worry about are the side dishes. Not too bad, eh? All I have to do is mash potatoes, yams, dressing, rolls and a veggie. Hooray!!! Since I only have one oven, this really makes my life so much easier!

Wow, that is awesome. This is when living in a small town is the pits. There is no one to cook my turkey and pick it up an hour before dinner. :rotfl2: That sounds wonderful. Enjoy!!

:yay::yay::yay:

I meant to say earlier that the squares on the banner were all tie dyed by the kids last month; I had someone way more talented than I am piece them together into a mosaic pattern. The same person made a stole for me to wear today that matched it! :woohoo:

Your banner is beautiful and a stole also. How nice!!

Happy Birthday Bethany!

Robin I am so sorry to hear of your Gram's passing. Please know we are here for you.

To everyone else ~ I hope all is well and you enjoy your day.

I have today and tomorrow off. I have 8 days of vacation to use before the end of the year, to use our lose. And with 3 weeks of vacation being my only perk working for my church I am NOT losing them. So I will catch up here and then get busy. I want to do some baking and a bit of cleaning. I played on Saturday so now I have to catch up.

Yesterday after church we all went to the Cathlioc Church for their Fall Dinner. Turkey and all the fixings - oh so good. When we got home Doug and I worked out in the yard all day. It was a beautiful day - almost 75. We got our Christmas lights and decorations put out. I know it is really early but here on the plains when you have a nice day you take advantage of it. I do believe this is the first time we put our lights out in our shirt sleeves. We leave for vacation in 2 weeks and won't get home till after Thanksgiving, so now all we have to do is plug them in when we get home. I also got all of our patio furniture put away and both porches looking great. Doug finished the last 3 rows of our fence (wow, it looks so great) and the flower beds are ready. Neither one of us could move last night but it is finished and we went to bed feeling like we really accomplished something.

WFDT ~ Homemade Chicken pot pie, green salads and hot tea.

I love being home!!!! I will check in through the day. :woohoo:

Robin~ I'm so sorry for your loss:hug:

Greg is home with the dreaded man cold...........it's going to be a long non-productive day.

NOLA girls I'm so glad your all going to be safe.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETHANY!!!!:cheer2::dance3::cheer2:

This just made me laugh. Alan has the same thing, and he so wanted to stay home today. I cringed when he called work, but they told him they really needed him, so I breathed a sigh of relief as he walked out the door.

I hope that woman chokes on her wishbone!

Karma can be a witch sometimes, she'll get hers. :thumbsup2

I have spent a lot of time in the last 7 or 8 years watching football in a nice variety of weather and figured I better know what I was watching. ;) I can now yell at the refs with the best of them! :rotfl:

Now I'm not sure where the good sales are!

See if they have them online. :thumbsup2

Had a busy weekend. Went Saturday morning to the swim meet which ended up being pretty nice. The pool we were at had lots of bleachers space in the pool are and had a nice lobby area overlooking the pool. I was able to snag a table in the lobby for us with a great view of the pool below and Z and I watched the meet from there.

The meet ran late so I had to run out of there really quickly to get my youngest DN to her t-ball game. My DS and BIL were stuck doing times because they didn't have enough parents to help cover and would have had to cancel the rest of the meet.

Z's t-ball game was really short, the other team only had 6 players and we got home at the same time as my sis, DN and BIL. My DN was so cute, it was their day to do snack and she was taking bags of popcorn and making sure all of the kids got one.

Saturday night they had an event so I went to Target. I wanted to see if they had any Halloween stuff left and got some really great prices on a few things, everything was 90% off. They had little Dixie plates, Solo cups, and fast food "plates" for 29 cents. They also had the big plates but 2 woman took all of the ones they had. Each of them, and they weren't together, had an entire cart full of plates. :sad2:

Sunday I took Z to a make up t-ball game while everyone else was at the swim meet. She was a trip, she spent most of her field time digging in the dirt and spinning in circles. On her first at bat I gave her a thumbs up and she told me she hadn't done anything yet! Then she got to be catcher and she just stood there, when she looked at me she told me everyone else did the same thing. :rotfl:

Dinner tonight will be King Crablegs. They have been having great prices on them and yesterday when I went to Wegmans they had fresh, never frozen ones and I realized that it is KC season. :woohoo:

Thanks for all the hugs, they mean alot. My daughter comes home from school soon and I'm a little nervous about telling her. On the other hand I'm going to see my brother who I haven't been able to see in two years. I'm sorry this is the reason but we both just live so far apart.

Sheryl- To be honest I don't really care who wins the game, I'm proud of myself just for knowing they are playing each other. It is easier for me if the pats win, then I don't have to hear my husbands grumbles.

Maria- When my husband was really sick in the hospital he was so easy to deal with, but boy a runny nose and he just whines. I usually just go out for the day.

Ellen- Enjoy your pot pie, I bought a turkey to cook this week and I'm planning on pot pies with the leftovers. They are just to cheap this time of year not to cook one up.

I'm doing an easy thanksgiving this year too. Nothing fancy, just the basics. We also don't need 20 different appetizers either so I'm just going to do 2 or 3. I'm really excited about next thanksgiving though, we're going on a suprise trip to disney. We aren't going to tell the kiddo until we pick her up from school and leave. I think it will be so much fun, and it's only a little more than a year away!

Have a great day everyone, thanks again for your kind thoughts.

Maria, I'm so sorry about the man cold!! For your sake I hope Greg gets well very soon!

Ellen, Wow you sure did accomplish a ton!:thumbsup2 I'm tired reading it. Glad you enjoyed your weekend!

Glynis, I hope Alan feels better tomorrow or that they need him at work again! ;)

Marilyn, I am totally jealous of your fresh king crab legs!

We aren't getting much here so far from Ida, just some on & off rain and wind gusts. :goodvibes It looks like it's going to go in near Pensacola, but hopefully will weaken. A's school was closed but Chris didn't find out until she pulled in to the parking lot, so she took off work. DH is trying to leave work early, he works on a canal & are outside the levees. I'm sitting around watching the weather & not much else.

Hi all - its been a busy few days and I'm trying to catch up here.

Glynis - a very belated Happy Birthday Jacob! Sounds like you had a good weekend.

Bethany - Happy Birthday!!

Nancy - hugs to Gail. I believe in Karma - she'll get hers one day.

Vickie - sorry your boy is sick; I hope he's feeling better soon.

Robin - So sorry for your loss. Its especially difficult when it is so sudden.

Dinner tonight is white beans and rice.

Hey Guys! We are back from the most awesome trip! I have not read past this page but wanted to check in. Thomas was such a good boy and Andrew had a ball with his brother in Disney! T got his hair cut on Main Street and had his first 5 minutes of fame on the big screen at Monster's Inc Laugh Floor!

Robin, I am so sorry for your loss...hugs to you and your family.

Bethany, Happy Birthday!!!

Maria, So happy for Emily! I hear ya on the man cold...Tom is sick now too...although, I think he is pretty sick. I think he picked a bug in Disney (it started last night)...thankfully the boys and I are all fine.

Glad the NOLA girls will be fine. Was thinking of all of you!

I am exhausted and need to do a few things. I will check back again soon. I hope everyone is doing well!:grouphug:

Kathy, Sheryl, Lauri, Lori Bethany Be safe I just heard about Ida. Bethany Ida is not bringing you a present don't let her in

Happy Birthday Bethany!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETHANY!

We are looking good as far Ida this morning. Some schools in the area are closed, but not A's. So it's a pretty regular day here, pick up some outdoor furniture & plants but not much else. I have leftovers still, but I might cook a pot of beans, in case we get any overnight guests. ( With the generator we'll have power :))

Happy Birthday Bethany!

Jake Delhomme was undefeated in the Dome.....NO LONGER, he went DOWN!

Thanks y'all for the birthday wishes! :goodvibes

Ida is a tropical storm at this point and is supposed to kind of cruise along the coast line. We are getting light rain at my place now and the wind has been picking up along with some gusts. It's howling a bit through my door.

If this thing had stayed hurricane strength, it would have been my first hurricane, but it's a TS and I've done those before - just not here. We had a half day of school today and a LOT of kids were out. Most classes had about a 50% attendance rate. Word was that they called for a half day before the others called it off, and they didn't want to go and change it after they had sent out the phone message. :confused3 Lame excuse! :rotfl2::rotfl:

Tonight it's just my 12 year old son and myself..... baked potatoes- ribeye- mushroom and onions- baby peas. Thought we'd splurge while Dad is gone on his hunting trip.

I haven't been here in FOREVER! How is everyone?? I was thinking about the Velvet Shrimp the other day... who's recipe was that?

:woohoo::banana: Jay is coming Home:yay::cool1:

I picked Ethan from school and when I dropped him off Elizabeth ran out to the car and told me to come quick. Scared me half to death!! Jay was on skype and told us that he got his papers and is coming home for his 2 week leave on the 20th. I am so excited. He starts flying on the 20th so it might take him a day or 2 but should be home by Saturday.

We are leaving on Monday for vacation - Elizabeth and Ethan were coming with us and of course won't now - so we won't see him the first week he is home but that's ok, cuz I am sure he won't want to do much visiting. :lmao:

I couldn't wait to get home to tell you all. I haven't even told Doug yet. :rotfl:

Maria ~ he also told me that he has gotten your box and to tell you thank you. There was a lot of good things that he really liked. Maria, thank you so much for doing this, it was so nice of you. Thanks!!

Life is so good today. :goodvibes

But Maria Im in man cold hell too....DH has lay on the couch all night sniffin and moanin.

Truly pathetic.

The boy,who remember is also struggling, had had enough and told him......." get a grip ya big jessie !! "

Loreli, Welcome home! :goodvibes How are you?! With dinner splurges like that, you're going to keep that hubby from going hunting! The velvet shrimp is TigerKat's!

Vicki, Your boy is too funny! I'm sure you two had a good laugh while the big guy grumbled off to bed.:lmao:

Just got back from my dentist, he finished up the root canal that was started in Orlando and informed me that the Orlando dentist screwed it up enough that I now need a crown.:sad2:

Sorry if I missed anything reading back, kinda feeling funky.

Lauren – Welcome home, missed you! Can’t wait to her all about it!

Ellen – I’m so happy for you!!! Unfortunately I just got my box ready to ship to him, guess I have to wait!

At least Greg has stayed in bed all day so I can hide downstairs.
His only requests has been for me to bring him tea:rolleyes:
He won't even allow me to put a lamp on...."he's to sick" so I proceeded to put laundry away in the dark.
Tomorrow when he asks me where something is I can truly say I have no idea. I stuffed the dresser & shoved things in the closet.;):rotfl:
I may have slammed a few drawers along the way.....
