Disney with a 9 month old

Hello,
We are going to WDW the end of Jan and bringing out baby boy who will be just about 9 months then. Can anyone tell me if we will be able to take him on the mild rides with us? What will he be able to go on at the parks? Thanks for any help/advise on traving to Disney with such a young baby....

Don't worry, you'll be able to take him on lots of stuff. The youngest child I ever took was my youngest when he was about 8 weeks old. I held him on many, many rides.

Be sure to utilize the baby stations for changing, feeding, etc. They are wonderful.

We'll have our 10.5 month old in January, too, and she'll probably stay in the Ergo for some rides just to make things easier. HIGHLY recommend the Ergo. Took my DD last year when she was 7 months & we went on everything -- teacups, peter pan, small world (her fav), dumbo, pooh, jungle cruise, TSM, buzz, the list goes on. Sometimes we took turns taking one or both big kids on stuff (Star Tours, Haunted Mansion) and the only thing we chose not to do as a family this year was the safari. DH took advantage of the single rider line to ride Everest and used FP to ride Soarin' by himself (well, we had 3 FP, & I was supposed to get one, but he tried taking DS & he chickened out so he wasted 2) She loved the shows though, and all the mild rides (slept through some).

The Ergo was a lifesaver though. I could just keep her in there for the rides, which was great, and then pop her out for shows. And she LOVED the characters, esp. the soft ones!

The list of things that you CAN'T do is much shorter than the list of things you can do.

DD (6 mo @ the time) LOVED going on the rides! Especially the boat rides! She loved Monster's Inc LF (and was part of the show!)

We took as many disposable items that we could. Bibs, changing pads, spoons, cups. You may or may not be on solids by then, and if you are, it'll be easier to feed him from your plate vs. lugging around jar food in the parks.

We took our formula in the 3-chamber dispensers and refilled on breaks (we had one for cereal too). We did the same with wipes and diapers, that way we kept our bag light. Take your stroller (or rent one from outside the park). He'll be too little for the Disney rentals and they are hard.

Make sure to give him time out of the stroller too. It's a lot to ask of the babies to stay in the stroller all day. Make sure to plan some time where he can play or toddle around.

Be careful of the fireworks! The loudness of the bangs didn't sit so well. Maybe pack some cotton balls so the noise isn't so bad?

After all of my planning for DD, we found it was easier to take care of her on the go than it was DS (2.5 @ the time). He was much more work!

With that said, he was able to ride a LOT of stuff. Pretty much everything except of course coasters, and wilder rides. Some examples of what he rode, and enjoyed were the jungle cruise, pirates, haunted mansion, small world, peter pan, pretty much everything in fantasyland really, and a host of other things at MK. Epcot was great too, riding Nemo, spaceship earth, the land etc. etc. He also really enjoyed Animal Kingdom, and things like the safair, rafiki's planet watch, and even the nemo show their.

So yeah, there are a LOT of things for a young one to enjoy at WDW. Many more than I have mentioned of course, and the memories you will create will absolutely last a lifetime!

Oh, on a side note. My wife uses a baby ring sling. She used it the entire 11 days we were there last trip, and absolutely swears by it. (Used on both trips actually). It allowed our son to sleep when needed, and still stay "hand held" at all times, even when on the rides. My wife said it was very, very pleasant to be able to hold him, without the arm\back strain. Highly recommended over say the bjorn type, which frankly, are a pain in the back, and don't allow the child to easily switch from facing you, to facing a away from you.

We took DD at 2 mos and 8 mos and took her on almost everything. The only things we didn't take her on were the roller coasters/thrill rides. There were only 2 rides that I felt should have had an age restriction, Buzz and Toy Story Mania. Not because they were dangerous but because the person holding the baby couldn't participate in the game. When we went with her at 2 mos, they had a child swap ticket for Toy Story Mania, but for some reason on our July trip they had changed it.

Don't forget about the childswap tickets at the thrill rides, they are a lifesaver. They can also be combined with fastpasses so neither one of you has to wait.

I couldn't agree more! We use a Moby wrap, which is similar. LOVE it! DD falls asleep pretty quickly in it.

Thanks for the info. Very Helpful. You mentioned you took your son on the Pirates and the Safari? Was he okay with the small drop in the Pirates ride? And you didn't find that the Safari was too rough? Thanks for your help!!

So the drop didn't bother her? I guess the Safari isn't that bumpy or wild. We didn't make it on the ride last time we were there so I wasn't sure.. That is good to know.. I am not too too worried about the fireworks because he is used to a lot of loud noises but we will have to just see how it goes..

It's not environmentally friendly (though I do recycle at home and that we had the opportunity to recycle in our hotel room at CSR) but it did clear up space for the trip home!!!

Meijer makes biodegradable (sp?) disposable bibs, which is what we used. I want to say the price is comparable to the Bibsters (20 ct for ~$4.99)

We used the Playtex drop-in system with both kids too (helped reduce spit-ups). It made things easier in the long run for the trip. We took 4 nipples, 2 bottle shells, and a load of inserts. Again, we would take 2 nipples into the parks and wash them at breaks. We'd have 2 dry ones waiting to switch out. (We DID pack our bottle brush and dish soap)

P.S. - Just thought of it... pack rain gear for your stroller!!!! I bought ~3 yards of plastic "fabric" from WalMart - you know, the stuff grandma used to cover the furniture with - and was able to drape it over the stroller to keep the rain out. I think it ran ~$3.

DD didn't mind the POTC drop either, but we did have her in a carrier. She didn't do the Safari, DH wasn't comfortable with the idea.

Oh absolutely regarding Pirates. We were a bit worried about that too, but in the end, we think he LOVED it due to the squeals of happiness emitting from him each time we did it, LOL. Seriously, it is our daughters favorite ride, so we wound up on it like 8-10 times one uncrowded evening. Our son enjoyed it, over, and over again!

As far as the safari being rough? He didn't seem to mind at all, and kind of started bouncing up and down himself attempting to mimic the truck movements I think. It was very, very cute!

No problems on Pirates with our DD, she seemed to like it. She went on the Safari on each of our trips and both times all the bumps put her to sleep! Such a shame because I know she'd love the animals. Hopefully she'll stay awake on our upcoming trip!

DD doesn't seem to like heights (like me), but loves the kiddie roller coasters now that she's tall enough. So, the drop did not bother her. One of those trips we did the Maelstrom too.

We took disposable sleeves for formula too. Then at night, I only had to clean nipples. We shopped down there and just bought pre-made bottles, but I know I was lucky to not have any formula issues.

When our DD was 23 months, she LOVED Toy Story Mania! We rode it twice that day - she sat on DH's lap because I was very pregnant and couldn't hold her on mine. It was the first time in a LONG time (probably ever) that I've beaten DH's score at something, and I took a picture to prove it... thanks to DD "helping" DH with the ball thingy. With a younger baby, I'd definitely put them in a carrier as the ride can whip around a bit as it goes from game to game and there's no way you could play while holding your baby, but we'll be going on again this time with DD2 in the Ergo.
