birthday trip report...now finished!

That was a great recap/reply to everything! I could seriously learn from you. :)

I just printed a sign for E to hold, if he decides to try for the Jedi Academy...got it from one of the DISigners' share sites...should probably go thank her. :goodvibes

Thanks for the reminder. I need to find my signs and/or print another. Worked great last time.

Does anyone have a button-maker? :) Man they're expensive...

We're not extending our trip; that was just crazy-talk. I banked the points today, so we'll have them starting next February.

And for a second special treat, a once in a lifetime (as far as I know) experience, the day after we get back, we're going down to Oregon for the Star Wars concert. :goodvibes Of course...we don't know if Robert will be able to get that day off, but we're hoping. :)

Poor Robert had to go in to work today for paperwork, and there are meetings tomorrow, but he's getting Friday off at least. Which is good, b/c I'm sick again. Drat!

It looks so awesome. And Robert did get that day off, so he gets to go and we won't have to be naughty and sell the ticket. We got the cheap seats, of course, and that's OK. We had the cheap seats at the same venue, the Rose Garden, for U2 several years ago and had a great concert all the same!

(if anyone gets "obstructed view" for U2, do NOT panic...I've gotten that twice, two different tours, two different venues, and both times it's been better than any other concert, INCLUDING the time we paid big bucks for on-the-floor seating for U2) (but I digress)

I think that parts are going to be pretty intense for the small one, but as usual we'll bring earplugs and he'll have us...hopefully he'll nap in the car on the way down so he doesn't fall asleep during the concert/show!

The concert looks really cool! Glad R can get the day off.

Are you all getting in early on the 10th? Will you try for fireworks that night? Want to join efforts to save a spot in front of Castle? It is half as much work with more people saving. I am hoping to get a bench, but will settle for a curb if I have to:)

Wooo! The hub has landed. OK, in CA, but still. Closer than he was! So now he has to wait 3 hours for his next flight, yawn. Really it's too long to just sit, but too short to go anywhere interesting. I just do not know about these travel agents!

So bummed E had to miss swimming yesterday, and probably will tomorrow, too. But I just can't deal with taking a sick kid out (OK, except for that once incident at Safeway...sorry to those around us...but I had to go b/c the list was in my head and I couldn't get it onto paper, and DS couldn't deal with me leaving him with hubby, so the three of us went...I had no idea that he was going to *get sick* all over me and the floor in the Dairy aisle, I'm so sorry). After all, I was glaring up a storm, in my mind at least, at the grandmother and grandson next to me, when the grandmother said "oh, you still have that cough? I'm glad the cough syrup helped"....AUGHHHHH if the kid needs drugs to quiet the cough, do NOT bring him to a baby-filled, enclosed, warm-air indoors swimming pool.....

I'll have to call the swimming people, see if we should just drop the class, or come in next week...we'll be missing the second to last class this session, too, b/c of the trip.

This t-shirt thing is growing on me. :3dglasses But I don't like t-shirts. I like v-neck, and pockets are kinda fun. Hmm... I could get tees for the guys and then a pocket-V for me and just print something out really small for myself, put it on the pocket.

Or if only I had a button making machine...I could just make myself buttons to match the boys!

What the heck kind of family are we; where the trip planner/mother does NOT want the matchy matchy Ts, but the guys in the family do?????!!!!!????

Glad your hubby made it back stateside! Sorry about E getting sick, hope he feels better soon. We have swine flu in the house - whoohoo! :headache:

Sorry if I've been a part of the whole t-shirt dilemma - hehehe. Good luck with the whole t-shirt/button situation :goodvibes

Glad Robert is home now, bummer about having to go in for paperwork, but yes - very cool that he gets to be home on Friday :yay:

Very cool about Star Wars - funny that you'll be up in Portland while we'll be down at DLR  You're right about the Rose Garden - great concert venu. I've seen Page & Plant, RUSH, Dire Straits among others up there :thumbsup2

Molly where are you?? You must be really sick. Well, take care and I hope you get better soon. My oldest has had the most dreadful cold/cough stuff for 8 days now (yes I am counting). He missed school last Thursday, and now he missed yesterday and today. Hoping after a restful weekend that he will get back on his feet.

(post started in the AM)

Yeah, I spent yesterday laying on the couch moaning and groaning and freaking the boy out. Actually he was OK, it was just when I kept saying that I wanted my mommy that he got a little confused.

Robert was allowed to come home at 2, and he has today off, so he took care of us.

My diagnostic side just kept running through everything going on with me, and with E (very different symptoms), trying to figure out what would be done, what could be done, if we went to see someone...but with the *thing* going on now with MDs not doing definitive testing, and with my absolute abhorence to treating without full knowing what's going on, and with neither of us being dehydrated, etc, I decided there was nothing to be gained. But finally Robert got out the Homeopathy book and found a remedy that matched pretty much ALL of my symptoms, went out to get it, and 3 doses later I'm almost right as rain! Since yesterday this time I could hardly get up (except to get stuff for E, of course), that's pretty amazing!

Now we have to figure out E. It's pretty much what you described with your guy, T, and it's working on 7 days. I totally might have been tempted to give him something to give him a bit of relief, but all the "somethings" have artificial sweeteners or corn syrup in them, and we all know how THAT would go over with his system!

Right now I'm having my coffee, keeping my headache from being layered with a caffeine withdrawal headache...of course, drinking coffee keeps me from being able to take another remedy (coffee and mint are two things you can't use while using homeopathy...which also means I have to use this NASTY apricot toothpaste), which is needed b/c my symptoms changed...an interesting conundrum.

So now we're all focused on making sure Robert does NOT get any of this nonsense! That would be baaaaaad.

Speaking of his health, the Specialty Pharmacy finally put their logic-thinking hat on, and decided to cover, and send, the HCG. Was delivered by overnight, this morning. Of course he needs a quick appointment with his endo to get a lesson, but we're glad they finally listened to reason.

(continued in the evening)

Robert started getting knocked down by something; I got him the scary oscillococcinum (derived from bleah things) and he's doing better. Or maybe I spoke too soon, as now his head hurts. Then again, Eamon just put him in a headlock, so maybe it's just oxygen deprivation.

Found a good remedy for E, hopefully that'll kick in. I was the brave and strong one who went out for groceries today...we try to shop for the month, so our cupboards were almost bare and it was needed. Bought EmergenC, echinacia/goldenseal, orange juice, etc etc etc.

Continuing to monitor everyone to make sure we don't need more help, of course.

So right now it's hard to think about the trip, b/c that takes mental energy and we don't have all that much of that. At least it's happening now, not in a few days, or worse, a week from now.

Oh Molly, I am sorry to hear you are all sick. I hope you all get better and are feeling great by trip time.

Molly... I am sorry to hear about this. I will be sending good vibes your way. I know you will feel better soon.

Thanks guys!

I've been thinking about a cottage industry that needs to start...people with immune systems that almost never let them "get" something should start a housekeeping organization, where they come by and wash dishes, get food for people, watch over a little one- that has way more energy while sick than their well parent would- while the parents get sleep, etc etc.

Of course, that person would probably just spread it amongst their clients, so maybe that's a horrible idea.

But the fact that I considered, just now, inviting my MIL over to wash our dishes makes it clear how unwell the household feels.

And E starting to cry while watching Diners Dives and Drive-Ins, because he felt so sorry for the crabs they were going to eat, was a sign that he's not doing so hot either. Normally he just talks about how he would do things differently if he ran a cooking show, or was an Iron Chef, or how you could do a veggie version...but tonight he just felt awful for the crabs.

Oh how I would like to turn on the heat...but I have a whole different relationship with fever than the guys do...mine come on fast, go high, and usually involve very odd thoughts (fairly sure I figured out the meaning of the universe last night...it's something about bringing a light to at least one person's eye in your lifetime) AND I like to bundle up during a fever...the guys don't do that, and aren't cold and do NOT do the "bundle up" thing while fevering, so it would not be appreciated.

OK while typing this, we saw lightening (lightning?), and I was in the process of saying "oh I guess I'll unplu"(g the computer) and taking the cord from the side of the laptop when SLAMMO the sound hit, and my wee brain didn't think "dude, the lightning already hit, you're safe" and I nearly had a panic attack due to fear. Which then scared my guys, both of whom have their backs to me, watching Guy Fieri (he's moved on from the crab).

(fairly sure I figured out the meaning of the universe last night...it's something about bringing a light to at least one person's eye in your lifetime) .

I always thought the meaning to the universe was to wear lots of hats. :lmao: Just kidding... I wish I could have profound thoughts when I was sick. I just sit there and whine. Feel better soon!

By the way, I love the fireworks-meetup idea. Assuming we're not quarantined or anything... :goodvibes

Oh dear Molly. Well, fingers crossed that all will run it's course between now and take off!

I packed my ear plugs tonight. Just in case we get to stay awake for fireworks. This is really hard for my guy! Just let me know. I do have your number on my cell phone. Do you text???
Still have my number?

Big news for my trip...Carrie's husband is coming along! He decided he could not miss Jack's first Disney trip. We are still all camping in one room, and it will be a bit different to say the least, but we don't need to hire a babysitter anymore for our night out:thumbsup2

Okay Molly. Take care of you all. Poor little E.
T

I've definitely turned a corner, though I'm not all clear.

Poor Robert... Thursday is his pill-taking night, and Friday is usually when he gets a NASTY nasty headache from it. So yesterday he forgot to drink coffee, and since we're kind of addicted to caffeine...by the nighttime he was dealing with a caffeine-withdrawal headache, the drug headache, AND a typical flu headache. All on top of each other. I'd had a rotten rotten one the night before, it was going in circles in my head, neck, and face, so boy oh boy did I feel empathy for him!

And E's stuff remains like a kick-butt head cold.

The guys are watching Nightmare Before Christmas...well, E is. R is sleeping on and off. Saturday is his lazy day, as the drug takes heavy effect...it's a drug that boosts the effects of dopamine to block the prolactin receptors (or something like that), basically, which causes sleepiness. The drug and his illness = sleepy.

Wow, it took THREE years to do the stop-action animation for that movie? I can't even imagine having the patience to see something like that through...

Is anyone else as annoyed as we are, that they took Toy Story 2 out of distribution? We were *just* about to get it when it disappeared...I assume that they'll put it back out after TS3 comes out though.

Well, putting those two paragraphs together caused me to toodle around the interwebs (ha), and omigosh, I hadn't realized that John Lasseter and Tim Burton were classmates at California Institute of the Arts! Wild. Burton is actually credited on Fox and Hound, but I remember hearing (probably from the Pixar documentary) that Lasseter worked on it too. They are almost the same age, both worked for a short time with Disney, moved on, and later came back to work more with Disney. Wild!

ranty ranty rant rant rant, do NOT read if not interested in my views of health and illness

So I ended up on the tamiflu website...turns out their concept of flu* is entirely different from the concept I grew up with...and since that concept came from a trusted pediatrician and personal experience, well, I'm going with him. :)

But anyway, now I'm on the PDF of what the drug is and does...looks like it's based on cell culture assays, and that this drug, in varying amounts, inhibits part of the virus which affects release of viral particles. And they say, right there on their own info, that the "relationship between the antiviral activity in cell cultures and the inhibition of influenza virus replication in humans has not been established." Greeeeaaaaattttt.

And the virus can mutate in response to the drug; they have already named several replacements. And the replacements are made something like 12 times more often with kids than with adults. Double-great. Nothin' better than getting multiple serotype replacements of virii from a treatment for ONE virus! :headache:

I love reading product inserts. So enlightening about what they do, and more importantly do NOT, know about the products...

*by their definition, in our household, I probably had the flu (high and fast fever, came on FAST, not much of a cough, painful chest)...but the guys did/do not. Even though E's been sick much longer and hubby was quite miserable (he finally woke up, saying "ohmygod, it's 2????!!!!?????). Hmm, OK...I'm also much better than they are now! (thank you Eupatorium Perfolatum remedy) Craziness. :dance3:

Tracey, just in case you don't get the earplugs in time, I already have a pack of Mack's junior-sized silicone earplugs that I'll have with me. They really make it easier on kids... DL is just so *loud*, and the fireworks can top off a loud day with crazy-making loudness.

That's so nice that his dad is coming along! I mean, yeah, very different, but nice all the same. :goodvibes

Sorry Robert has to go through such a mess with his meds plus the caffeine headache – those things by themselves are no fun. Hope he and E are both better! :goodvibes

And yes, the took Toy Story 2 out of circulation …I imagine they took both of them out. They want to ensure that if anyone gets a bug to see TS1 or TS2 they’ll go to the theaters and see them ;)

Yes, doing research on drugs is always very enlightening. I always love the list of side effects some of this stuff has, especially the anti-allergy meds that my older DD has to take  She actually finishes her course of tamiflu tonight. Her fever did break after 3 days and she is back at school, so I’m assuming it did some good :confused3

Robert's totally fine, lucky duck!

I'm still just tired...my lungs take things hard and I'm not getting enough sleep b/c of certain people snoring and being worried about the kidlet.

Tracey, has your son's nose stuff cleared up?

Going through the usual business stuff...making the decision on transportation (still too chicken for priceline + it means carseat, so it looks like disneyland express purchased at a discount through getawaytoday.com), dealing with OUR airport (looks like wallypark as they have a good coupon, although masterpark was a great choice last time! and dougfox had good service too), figuring out what to put in the one checked bag (glowsticks, I think, etc), figuring out what else, etc etc.

The never-ending title change. :) I figure DS and I are each about 3/4 sick. Or maybe 1.5 is exaggerating. Maybe 1.25.

Gotta go see if the little bug is napping (he just said, from the couch, "I'm taking a nap") because that would be the best. He's only taken one nap during this illness, though today he and I slept until 11, which is absolutely unheard of for him.

Nope, no nap yet. But he's lying down. He knows that today is the make or break day...if there's improvement, if he complies with what I tell him he needs to do/take/etc, that is good. If no improvement, we'll be seeing his ND tomorrow, and we might just have to cancel the trip. This would be bad. Non refundable flights that were too cheap to get much credit back, if they were to give it. And we'd LOSE those points. And one of the things he has agreed to is taking it EASY today. TV is big today. I just refuse to take a still sick kid on a plane...hmm, maybe E and I could drive and Robert could meet us!

Ooooh, I just put the Giadi cooking show on b/c DS loves her, and she's making something with chard, tiny tomatoes, little shell pasta....yum!

mustard...the tamiflu drug does something to a neuraminase which somehow slows down replication, if I'm remembering correctly what I read, of the virus. Ultimately what it *can* do for people is take the illness down by about 1.3 days. To me, that's just not worth it. But that's also not what doctors say, it seems, when telling people to take it. I just don't know that there is enough informing in today's western medicine, to allow for informed consent. To us, a flu can knock you down. So you just stay down until you can get up. The 1.3 average time isn't worth it for us. But hubby has a lovely boss, E doesn't go to school, I'm a hermit...it's easy. :goodvibes

I hope she feels better!

Robert's symptoms were very classic flu, and he took Oscillococcinum within hours of the symptoms starting, he took 3 total doses, and he was perfect in a VERY short amount of time. E and I didn't take that b/c we didn't have those symptoms. Bummer for us!

Oh I hope we don't have to cancel, and I also hope driving isn't in my cards. That's a long drive for me now! I kind of got over that drive in college, and that was just to the Bay Area....:upsidedow

Hi Molly,
Get better darn it! My oldest is still snuffy but cough is nearly gone. And he feels better, which counts for a lot. But he is not on this trip so I am not worried too much about him. Little one is holding up well! I have been fighting just a cold with snuffy nose, but feel pretty good. So it is all go for us!

You might try the used stores and/or pawn shops for Toy Story 2. We pick up off circulation movies like that all the time. I can't get my little one to watch Nightmare before Xmas for anything. Too Scary. Yet he swears he is going on Ghost Galaxy and he wont' be scared because he loves Space Mountain. We'll see, I guess.
